Hello there.

I am looking for the two daughters of my Aunt Alice Aspden (nee Vernon).Sister to my father Frank Vernon.
Aunt Alice married George Aspden around 1930/31 from ? and had two daughters Patricia (1932) and Jocelyn (1939). I am very new at this 'chase' so literally, maybe on a wild goose chase, but I thouht it worth a try. My tree, which still needs a lot of refining is the Hazel Grove Vernon Family Tree.
Regards
Diana

It is possible that I have found the grand parents of my ancestor, Alice Vipont Hartley. Her parents were Edward Vipont and Jane Halsted. Jane was born in 1603 and her sister, Anne in 1604 and recorded in the Burnley Register. There is a marriage there of a William Halsted and Anne Aspden in 1600 which is in the correct time frame.
I notice there are several posts on the later Aspdens but is anyone familiar with the family of Ann who was probably born ca. 1580 or later? A Sir John Aspden was rector of Burnley and died in mid 1500's.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it is entirely possible that we are related. If not to me then to one of several Aspden lines that other researchers are investigating. In order for me to know which family line you fall into I'll need more information. How far back can you get in your line. If you'll give me names and dates I'll see what I can do. .............Ed

Bob - I know of a Peggy Aspden/Aspin bapt.1820 at Darwen St James to James & Alice HOLDEN [m.1819 at Blackburn]who is in the 1841 census @ HO.503/11 Folio 38 [Sough Bottoms, Darwen] but you need parents name and her address from the marriage certificate to be sure it's her, as Aspden/Aspin are thick on the ground in Darwen. This Peggy is not a close relative so I know nothing of what happened to her after 1841. Ray

Dear Charlene - Sorry, no. With my line being solid in Darwen back to 1795 (and reasonable beyond that to 1685 also in Darwen), I haven't done any transcribing of 1800/1900 Blackburn records. The marriage certificate should give you a further generation and a link with the censuses. Ray 15 January 2008

Well, here's what I have. My grandmother, Martha Brooks Rank, (1891, Wigan, England, d. 1977, Seattle, WA.) was the daughter of Alice Aspden Brooks, (b. 22 Feb 1855), daughter of Matthias Aspden, (b 1825), and married to Mary Ann, no last name, born 1885. I am also trying to connect the names. All born in England.

So good to see others researching this surname! I will keep adding names as I find them.

All of the information that I have comes from a US Supreme Court case involving the money left by Matthias Aspden who died in 1824. Thomas is name used quite often by the family, however, I have no record of the Thomas that you mentioned. I'm sure that your Thomas ties into my family but I just don't have any record of it. I have not gone through all of the Supreme Court files and your Thomas could be mentioned in the records that I have not searched. Some day I'll get the time to go through them all.

Phyllis, I have an Elizabeth Constantine who was born about 1833. That would make her about 17 when she married in 1845. Unfortunatly I don't have any thing else on her. Do you think there is a connection.

Please reply directly to me at ebradford@spacey.net

thanks .............Ed

I too am looking for a Thomas Aspden 1786-1853 that lived in Philadelphia. His wife is Susan Constantine. I have run across your Thomas several times in my research but don't have any details on him. He is probably related to my Aspden line but back several generations in time. A good deal of the Aspdens in the Philadelphia area came to stake a claim to a portion of Mathias Aspdens money. Mathias died without wife or issue.

Thank you for your reply. Since I started my search, I found some information in our Company files in the National Archives in Ottawa.

I discovered that Thomas Aspden returned to Manchester in 1860 and lived at 9 Grafton, Beford Road (I got the address from a letter Thomas Aspden sent to W.T. Benson in 1865. I also found out that Thomas had a brother William.

Hope this helps.

Colleen

Sorry but baptism of a frequent name like Ann Aspden/Aspin is difficult to pick up specifically ca. 1815. With marriage at Blackburn one can't even be sure she was born in Darwen. Surprised you drew a blank with Blackburn St Mary's marriages at Preston CRO as I'm sure I've seen them there in the past. Ray 8 March 2005

Ann Aspden (or Sapden) m. William Jackson 1834 in Blackburn

I am trying to find details of Ann Aspden who married my GGG granfather in 1834. His name was William Jackson. I think I have the IGI record which says the marriage took place on 20/10/1834 in Blackburn but the name of the spouse is recorded (incorrectly I assume) as Ann Sapden. I was unable to verify this at the Lancashire records office as the transcripts were not available. I know that William and Ann were living in Bolton Street Over Darwen in 1838 when their son Thomas was born (my GG Grandfather) and I think Ann was born in about 1815. Can you offer any information that might help me fit together my jigsaw of information. Many thanks Liz Hayden(nee Jackson)

My Aspden too came from Over Darwen. Thomas son of William (both colliers) married Ann Hargraves in 1843 and in 1844 moved to Poynton Cheshire UK. Ann Hargraves was living 1841 in Day Eye, Over Darwen a place which no one seems to know about. See my entry on www.genforum.com on Aspden page about how surname changed in just my family.

Matthew,

Are you still living in the UK ?

The Aspden name originated in East Lancs, probably from a village near Oswaldtwistle (nr Accrington) early references go back to the 1200s.
There were around 1300 Aspdens registered in th UK in the 1881 census so that number will have obviously increased considerably.

The way I started was by talking to older relatives and gathering as much information from them that I could. By contacting other relatives you may well find someone who has already done some work and that may give you a good start.

BTW I am from Burnley, Lancs

Stephen Aspden

Dear Martyn,

I have for many years wondered where my surname originated from, and also keen to learn about my family history.

Up until March this year I lived in Darwen, Lancashire, where many of my family also lived, my father Thomas Aspden was the eldest of five from my Grandparents. My Grandfather, Thomas Aspden passed away July this year. He was in the army during the second world war i think.
He married my grandmother Irmgard, but i cannot remember her maiden name, sorry.
My father was born in 1946, Germany. Not 100% about my grandfather's birthdate. I think my Great Grandfather was called Thomas Holt Aspden.

Do you have any information at all relevant to this?
The five children are:

Thomas Aspden (my father)
Ann Black(nee Aspden) deceased
Robert Aspden
Peter Aspden (deceased)
Leo Aspden.

Hope you can give me a little info. to get me started on finding my family history.

Thankyou for your time.

Matthew Thomas Aspden.
