My great great grandparents were Ephriam and Mary Ann Moore Aston. My great grandmother was their daughter Fannie. I can find absolutely nothing about them in Anderson co. I know that Ephriam came from SC and Mary Ann was born in GA. On the 1880 census, a J.G. Aston age 21 is listed as head of the house with Fannie age 19 and Mary Ann age 14 living with him. They must have been orphaned, and their parents would have died after 1866. I hope someone can help as this is the only family in my heritage I know nothing about.

Now that a better coverage of the 1851 census for Manchester is available on line, we now know that James Aston, a widower, was living in Manchester at that time with his married daughter Emma Lancaster, her husband Henry and three of James' sons, and that James was born in Coleford, Glos., about 1801. Sadly he was killed in an accident in Manchester in January 1856. Cause of death: "a truck fell on him".

I have this family.

1. RICHARD1 COCKE was born Abt. 1600, and died 1665. He married (1) TEMPERANCE BALEY OR BAILEY. He married (2) MARY ASTON, daughter of WALTER ASTON and UNKNOWN.

He left issue, five sons and one daughter
1. Thomas Cocke
2. Richard Cocke
3. John Cocke
4. William Cocke
5. Richard "the younger" Cocke
6. Elizabeth Cocke

6. RICHARD2 COCKE, THE YOUNGER (RICHARD1)

Notes for RICHARD COCKE, THE YOUNGER:
5. RICHARD COCKE (2) the younger (It was not unusual in those days for brothers to have the same Christian name) settled at "Old Man's Creek", in Charles City county, left him by his father's will. The records of Charles City county (like those of James City) were mostly destroyed by the Federal soldiers in the late war, and we know almost absolutely nothing about this youngest of Richard Cocke (1). There is good reason to conjecture that he may have been the father of Anne Cocke (3) who married Robert Bolling of Charles City in 1706 and became the maternal ancestor of the line of the Petersburg Bollings.

I descend from Anne Cocke and Robert Bolling.

I have Austins in my family which appear to have begun as Aston in Pennsylvania. The family name became Austin soon after they moved to Virginia in the 1700's. Some of this is Ancestry family trees which spun off mine but I took my Austins back to 1775 or so -- then it was Aston from Birmingham, England.

I don't have any direct information about Hugh Aston, but I do have relatives from Lawrence County, and I know a person named James Aston Guin, who is from Marion County. My Lawrence Co. Aston's were married into the Wade family. The James Guin Aston is not close but has a very distant relationship as he was given the middle name of Aston, it being a family name.

I have a Great Uncle Hubert Aston who was born in Chickasaw Co. Miss. and died in New Madrid, Mo. He was often referred to as Hugh. In any case, My wife Joan Aston does all of the research and has a lot of Aston information, some of which could be helpfull to you. I'll have her get in touch with you. Have a great day.

James Aston
1413 Victoria Ave
Opelika, AL 36801
334-703-1888

I have been researching in PA in the mid 1700's for Astons. I have found 3 so far. Daniel Aston, was a witness for a will for Henry Jameison in Warwick Twp, Bucks Co PA, April 1765. I've not found any other Astons in Bucks Co or any other references to Daniel as yet. Since Alexander Aston (b 1765, Bucks Co and married to Ann Braly) named his first son Daniel, I think it might be likely that the older Daniel is Alexander's father.

What do you think?
Jan
Re: Martha Bell Aston & Daniel Aston

Howdy, Jan!

Some interesting observations on Daniel Aston which you might appreciate.

First, you are correct that Alexander Aston named his first son Daniel. But... so did John Aston of Powhatan County. And both of these Daniel Astons lived in Wilson County, Tennessee at the same time.

Therefore, the older Daniel Aston (or Ashton) may be John Aston’s father. Consider that John Aston’s sister, Elizabeth, married Reuben Saunders and moved first to Louisa County, Virginia. John Aston of Powhatan County deeded land to Reuben and Elizabeth Saunders in Louisa County.

Then consider that a Daniel Aston/Ashton of Louisa had a daughter named Catherine Saunders. This Catherine Aston/Ashton married William Saunders of Louisa County, and his will was dated in 1818 and probated in 1825.

There is more. We know that a Daniel Ashton entered into an apprenticeship to be a miller in 1811. The agreement was with William Cocke. Notice the last name. The Cocke family married into the Walter Aston (of Charles City) family, as did the Aston family. Both Astons and Cockes live near each other in Powhatan County, Virginia in the 1700s and 1800s.

In 1789, a Daniel Aston and Samuel Aston (both names John Aston would give to two of his sons) are listed on the census of Goochland County, Virgina (carved from the original Jamestowne and Henrico).

Alexander Aston’s son, Daniel, married a Jane Bell in 1817 in Wilson County, Tennessee. Later, the Daniel Aston, son of John Aston of Powhatan County, would have a son, Charles Samuel Aston. Charles Samuel Aston married my great-grandmother(3), Martha Bell. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

To add to the confusion and mystery, a “Daniel Astin” has an executor (Samuel Flournoy) listed in the late 1700s in Powhatan County, Virginia. (Robert K. Headley, Jr., “Genealogical Abstracts from 18th Century Virginia Newspapers”, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1987.)

This Daniel Aston can not be the son of John Aston, since Daniel Thomas Aston did not die until the 1800s later on in Wilson County, Tennessee (1854, according to Sistler, Byron & Barbara, Index to Tennessee Wills & Administrations, 1779-1861 [1990]).

Then too, Jane Austin of the Austin Family Association lists a Daniel Aston as the father of John Aston of Powhatan County, the same John Aston who deeded land, adjoining Daniel Aston’s in Louisa County, to his sister’s husband, Reuben Saunders.

In addition, Jane Austin lists Daniel Ashton of Goochland County as marrying Elizabeth McLain and then moving to Louisa County.

The connection between John Aston of Powhatan County and Daniel Ashton/Aston of Goochland and Louisa Counties appears to be familial, arguing strongly for a Daniel Aston as the father of John Aston of Powhatan (as Jane Austin argues).

In summary, we do not know the connection between Alexander Aston, his son Daniel, and the Daniel Ashton/Aston of Goochland and Louisa and his son, John (who also has a son named Daniel Thomas Aston living near Alexander and the other Daniel Aston in Wilson County, Tennessee, in the 1800s). You may have some information, however, from the Pennsylvania side that may prove of worth.

We do know that John Aston’s son, John R. Aston, claimed his father came from Pennsylvania.

If you could send me the information you have gathered on the Astons in Pennsylvania, I will go over it and look for connections.

In the meantime, the mystery is intriguing, given the names Aston, Bell, and Cocke (the latter, as I mentioned, a name connected with Walter Aston).

Feel free to email me at fireeater1861@yahoo.com.

Regards,

MacDonald King Aston

Family Skeleton: Martha M. Bell (Aston)

For years it was assumed that John Aston’s grandson, Charles Samuel Aston, had one son by Martha M. Bell Aston, James Daniel Aston (born about 1850). Charles’ son William Henry Aston was supposed to be the son of Charles and Margaret Rebecca Callison, and family tradition maintained the story.

In 2007, however, I visited the Grand Junction Cemetery and found the grave of Martha M. Bell (Aston). The grave was marked so that her husband’s name read “G. S. Aston,” but the marker is incorrect (probably a carver’s mistake as is common). Martha died in 1856 at 24 years of age.

Because research by Tay Aston showed that the marriage between Charles Samuel Aston and Mararet Rebecca Callison took place on 17 September 1857 in Montgomery County, Virginia, suddenly the dates for both James Daniel Aston and William Henry Aston did not make sense—not if they were born to Margaret Rebecca Callison.

James was born about 1850, and William Henry was born in 1854. The two brothers were thus born before Charles Samuel Aston married Margaret Rebecca Callison.

Adding to the evidence that Margaret Rebecca was not the mother of the two Aston boys is the 1880 census of Sebastian County, Arkansas. In that census Margaret Rebecca (named “Rebecca” on the census) listed her age as 42 and her “son,” William Henry’s as 26. If Margaret Rebecca were the mother of William Henry, she would have been about 16 years old at his birth. Wiliam Henry’s age of 26 matches precisely with his birthdate of 1854, which is also given on his gravestone in Shawnee Oklahoma.

But Margaret Rebecca was about 19 when she married Charles Samuel in 1857. Clearly, something is amiss.

Most important, though, William Henry’s son, Charles Samuel Aston, Jr., filled out the death certificate for his father William Henry in 1918. On that certificate he writes that William Henry’s mother was not Margaret Rebecca Callison, but “Mary Bell.”

My father, Melvin Louis Aston, Jr., worked for Charles Samuel Aston, Jr., following WWII, and he confirmed that Charley, as he was called, was not only of sound mind, but clear-headed and an astute business man. There would be no reason for Charley to write a “Mary Bell” as his father’s mother on William Henry’s death certificate, except one: William Henry’s mother was indeed a Martha M. Bell (perhaps known as Martha Mary Bell).

In 1974, I interviewed my great-aunt Olga Jean (Aston/Fenton), who was quite certain that William Henry’s mother was Margaret Rebecca Callison. Obviously, Charley, Olga Jean’s brother, whom I met when he was seventy, knew something that Olga Jean did not know, and equally obvious, someone told Charley the truth about his real grandmother, Martha M. Bell.

Because Martha M. Bell Aston died so young, the two boys would never have known their real mother, only their step-mother, Margaret Rebecca Callison, and perhaps they were raised to think of her as their mother.

Why the truth was hushed up, we’ll probably never know. But the evidence for that truth is overwhelming, given in both primary (dates) and secondary (death certificate) sources.

Charles Samuel Aston had two sons by Martha M. Bell: James Daniel Aston and William Henry Aston.

MacDonald King Aston
13 August 2007

Martha Bell Aston

I discovered the grave of Martha Bell Aston, first wife of Charles Samuel Aston (of John Aston family, Powhatan County, Virginia) last week in Grand Junction Cemetery, Hardeman County, Tennessee.

Because of a stonecarver's error (or eccentricity), the gravestone for Martha Bell Aston had listed as her husband, "G. S. Aston." This grave, however, is the grave of Martha Bell Aston, whose husband was "C. S. Aston." (Engraving errors are common.)

The gravestone reads:

Martha M
Wife of
C. S. Aston
DIED
Aug. 4, 1856
AGED
21 yrs 9 mos
&
7 days

Beautiful. Beloved.
Good. Happy:
all avail not.

Martha Bell and Charles Samuel Aston were married on 6 Dec 1847.

Interesting note: Charle's father was Daniel Thomas Aston, son of John Aston of Powhatan County, Virginia. Daniel Aston settled Wilson County, Tennessee, in the early 1800s. But another Daniel Aston, son of Rev. War veteran, Alexander Aston, also settled Wilson County. This other Daniel Aston married a Jane Bell. And a Robert D. Bell served as administrator of his estate. The Bell connection, thus, argues for a possible connection between the two Daniel Astons.

~mac king aston

Eveline and John J Aston were siblings. They were the children of John Aston by his first wife, Sarah Moffett. The Aston's made his way from Philadelphia through Virginia to Tennessee. It was in Virginia where John met and married Sarah. John married a second time to Ann Hall. John and Ann had several children. John had an older brother named James, but I cannot tell if that is the James M you mention.
Ken

I also noted that my Hugh Aston's wife, Margaret Sanders was born in Chickasaw Co, Mississippi. So we might be talking of the same people. Thanks again. Glenna

Hi Joan,
Thank you for sharing with me. My email is gjdameron47@comcast.net. I am sure that whatever you can share with me about Hugh Aston will be helpful in deciding he is or isn't the right Aston. Besides maybe it will jump start me to get going again on my genealogy. Thanks again. Glenna
