Re: NAME ORIGIN

My name is Ingrid Asturias. I have the genealogy of the Asturias family since Don Sancho Alvarez de las Asturias came to América, specifically, to Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, now called "Antigua Guatemala" in the end of the XIIX century. The last name was "Alvarez de las Asturias" but aproximately three generations ago, the name became just "Asturias". My grandmother was Elisa Hall de Asturias, who wrote a book in old spanish (in 1936) about this "Sancho Alvarez de las Asturias", and my grand grand mother was Elisa Tejada de Asturias. So, there is a Colony in Guatemala city which my grandfather named "Santa Elisa". Even the Church was called in that way. But the funny and ashamed thing is that there is no any Saint called "Elisa". I would like to get in touch with you if you need any information. My email is ingridasturias@hotmail.com. I hope you understand well my English.
So tell me.

May help w/reassurance, but I've traced our Llanes family back to the tiny fishing village called Llanes, on the northen coastline of Asturias, Spain. It's on many antique maps. Luckily, the grandpas passed down the info before they passed, that their name came from the town the family came from: Spain>Cuba>Florida.
Good luck on your study. Best place to start is w/the elders.

Hi again!
I am back to searching. I have recently re-started my search. I have begun by asking my grandfather, who is probably the best source at this very moment. I have not had any luck tracing anyone with the same last name. My hopes are to create a timeline with details of my family.

Elisa Asturias-Mass

Elisa, you posted this several years ago, so I don't know if you're still searching on this site, but I did want to respond to your email.

From my own heretofore limited searches, I understand that the Asturias surname (which I share with you) is not very common and that it is likely from the Asturias region. Someone wrote on another message board (www.asturianus.org) that the name dates back to the MIddle Ages when the Alvarez family in Asturias, Spain, were referred to as Alvarez de las Asturias. It was later shortened to simply Asturias. After the New World opened up and various Asturias family members scattered throughout the colonies, the name spread throughout the empire.

If you're still searching, I'd love to compare notes with you. I've achieved extremely limited success so far. My own branch of the Asturias family migrated to the Philippines, but I've no idea how far back that was. If you've any info, do let me know. Thanks!

Elisa,

I am having the same problem that you are having. My surname is "Asterilla", which I was told is pronounced "Asteria." I'm also told that it originated in Portugal. Could these names be similar?

I don't know if this will help you, but I found about 9 individuals with the name 'Asturias' all of whom are located in Spain from about 1050AD. There were no mention of birth dates, and the name "Asturias" appeared to be a location.

Contact: http://www.KindredKonnections.com

Hope it helps

I also believe that these last names originated from the same place. Asterilla and Asturias sound very similar. All I know is that my grandfather's parents, parents came from Spain. That's about all the history I've gathered. I just hope to find its roots. Good luck to you too!
