things like county and family histories always have to be verified as they are not truly sources in and of themselves.

it is lovely to say the mcdonald family in america was founded by 5 brothers who came from scotland in 1774 and settled near upperville.

however, there is always more than one immigrant of the same last name.

we have found records on Jared McDonald (not neccesarilly the same Jaread from the Mo. history) who was in america prior to the birth of a son John in 1766 in Prince George's County, Province of Maryland. sometime prior to the 1768 birth of a son Jared, the family moved to Fauquier County, Virginia Colony.

this makes the coming from scotland in 1774 either incorrect date, or just simply the wrong person.

we also have him as dying about 1808, supported by the 1810 census where his wife eleanor is shown as head of household, but matching her death in 1832 in Upperville.

we have no proof of "our" jared being married prior to immigration (or even his date of immigration) or that he had children prior to arrival in the colonies.

we (at least I) have never seen anything about father Michael and GF Kieran, both in scotland.

If you have any documentation to support this, other than pointing at someone else's tree, who filled theirs in after seeing it on another tree, I would love to get a copy of it.

The ancestral information I have learned about is from the publication "The McDonalds of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia" by Joseph T. (Tommy) McDonald, now out of print. This book was available via interlibrary loan when I was doing my research. Tommy established Jared's death date as 1808 so suggestions of death in 1824 are likely erroneous. Unfortunately, Tommy passed away recently. Finding facts in the 1700s is a big challenge.

Through the FTDNA project for Clan Donald, it's been determined I am one of 3 men who possibly share this Jared as a common ancestor or possibly one of his brothers if the information is valid about them. I have a genetic distance of -1 with one McDonald and -3 with the other one out of the 67 markers tested. The -1 person has a definite paper trail to Jared McDonald, jr, son of Jared and Eleanor. Like you we're interested in any additional information about Jared's ancestors.

Since writing the original request for information about my grandfather Harry Ngaire Atchinson, we have discovered no birth certificate was ever issued from a Passport Request Application Form Harry lodged March 31, 1916 before his second trip to New Zealand. He was in fact born on January 6, 1883 not 1888 at Ste Saulte Marie (previously called Soo), Michigan when the family was travelling to Marinette from England. His mother - Maria Read Atchinson nee Skillington (previously married to Joseph Read who died 1878 in Grantham, England) His father - William Atchinson married Maria March 22, 1882 in Rotherford, Leicestershire, England. Harry Atchinson died January 2, 1948 at Pollock, Manukau Peninsula, Auckland, New Zealand.

I am now trying to trace families associated with Harry Atchinson's 11 Read stepbrothers and stepsisters who all ultimately emigrated from Bottesford, Leicestershire, in England to Marinette Wisconsin via Liverpool, Londonderry, Quebec, Ste Saulte Maree to Marinette with William and Maria Atchinson in 1882/3. They were Eliza, Harriett, Charles, Emma, William, Hannah, Maria, Lillian, Joseph and Walter Read.

So far I have made contact with members two branches of the Read families - William (Willie) Read and Lillian Maass (nee Read) families. I have letters from a John Read Jackson - Emma Read's grandson dated 1936 and 1943 written to my Uncle in New Zealand, but have not been able to make contact with any of the Jackson family.

If anyone has links to my Great Grandmother Maria Read Atchinson and her 11 Read children in the US, I would be very interested to make contact, as I have photographs and letters etc of the various family members which were in William Atchinson's personal papers. William - Harry's father (Maria's husband) is also buried in the same cemetery as Harry at Waiuku, South Auckland, New Zealand.

Hi there, I am a decendent of Harry Atchinson. William Atchinson was born in Boston, Lincolnshire 5.8.1837 (or 1838? some info shows) He was first married to Mary Ann who died in childbirth, after delivering Henry on 14.10.1860, Chorlton, Arwick, Lancaster England. He and his second wife Elizabeth came to Auckland NZ on the Matoaka ship arriving Jan 3 1865. They were farmers, and he died in Waiuku (Auckland) 23.4.1923. I have Harry Ngarie Atchinson as being born 06.01.1888 in Soo Michigan, he died 2.1.1948, also near Waiuku Auckland NZ. My grandfather his son was Dennsion Read Atchinson - which your information explains where his middle name came from. I'm afraid thats all I know. Could you let me know what you know of the Read's. I've been doing my own family tree. Today I was trying to find out who Harry's mother was, and now you've provided that info for me, thank you :-) Was Maria married to William, as I have info that Elizabeth was his second wife? John ATCHINSON, sire of the families of that name in this town, was born in North Adams, Mass in 1794 (1788) and removed to Jericho while yet a young man, where he married Lydia PACKARD, and to them was born a family of ten children, eight boys and two girls, five of whom now reside in this town.
(THIS WOULD SEEM TO BEAR OUT THAT ALL THE ATCHINSONS THAT I HAVE LISTED ARE PROBABLY THE PROGENY OF JOHN AND LYDIA PACKARD ATCHINSON but I am still missing 2 children.)

In 1808, John ATCHINSON took the oath of Freemen in Jericho, Vermont, (History of Jericho, Vermont p.159)

"The Indian raid in Hatfield, Hampshire, MA, took place on Sept. 19, 1677 in the meadows and at a house building site. Those killed were "Sgt Isaac Graves his brother John Graves, John Atchisson [sic. Atchison, my ancestor]; John Copper of Springfield, aged 18; Elizabeth, wife of Phillip Russell and her son Stephen, aged 3 years; Hannah, wife of John Coleman, and her babe Bethiah; Sarah, wife of Samuel Kellogg, and her babe Joseph; Mary, Wife of Samuel Belding, Elizabeth Wells aged 2 years, daughter of John Wells; in all 12."
Seventeen were taken captive and four were wounded. The captives were later returned from Canada about 8 months later.

Source is Judd's "History of Hadley" from Picton Press, Pages 175-179.

A few rootsweb databases have John born 1636 in Suffolk England, citing a professional researcher.

John Atchison is listed as an early settler of Hadley, from which Hatfield was formed about 1665. Hadley commenced settlement in 1659.

John was killed by Indians in 1677.
[Judd, Sylvester, History of Hadley : including the early history of Hatfield, South Hadley, Amherst and Granby, Massachusetts Springfield, Mass.: H.R. Huntting & Co., 1905.]

According to Torrey Marriages John and Deliverance were married by 1672, Hadley. [{Hadley Fam. 7 [Judd citation above]; Fulton Anc. 364; Fallass 175; Sv. 1:72 [no birth data]; Springfield Fam. (ms) 18; Cary Anc. 55}].

I am trying to trace Mary Ann Atchinson born c1846 in Cropwell Butler, Notts England. She married Sam Sansom in Nottingham in 1871.

Jacob Atchison - PA Late 1800's

I'm trying to find information on Jacob Atchison's family. He was born between 1860-1870 in Northern Ireland. He emigrated with his family to the USA in 1883.

In 1893 he married a woman named Mathilda who was also born in Northern Ireland. They resided in Philadelphia and had 4 children: James F. b. 1898, Margaret b. 1900, George J. b. 1902 and William T. b. 1906. On the 1910 Philadelphia census Jacob is listed has having his neice and nephew stay with him as well: Mary Whalen b. 1895 and Edward Whalen b. 1892.

George married Alice Clark in 1930 and had 2 children....
