This is great, I knew that Peggy had passed away and I wrote to her son Michael, however, I never received a reply, I have been trying to build some history on the Hughes Family. Peggy was my cousin, Ann her mother was my mothers sister. Is there a way we can email. I would really like to get some more info on the family. Grace

The Atchley Reunion is typically the 2nd Sunday in August in Sevierville TN. Pot luck lunch about 1 or 1:30 pm - I'm sorry you didn't get the notice. It was posted here several weeks ago! Please email me your mailing address and I will forward it to the family in charge of the reunion - they send post cards out to the addresses they have.

Thanks!

Jeri (Assistant to the Atchley family - not actually an Atchley!)

I am the grand daugter of Gilbert Atchley and Kanasta Luther Atchley. They are mentioned on page 98 of the second edition of the Atchley family history. My Dad was John Atchley, not mentioned in the book, there were 2 other siblings not mentioned also. They had 9 children in all. I would like to update of information if there is to be another printing. Also I would like to know of reunions when they are planned. We live near Chicago, but we do visit Tennesse at least once a year.
Ammie Sue Atchley-Ruettiger

I beleive he is the brother to my great great grandfather, John S. Atchley. I don't have too much information, but I would love the know a little more. I do know that John lived in Bledsoe and Wayne County most of his life and then later he lived with his brother George. Before his death he moved to the Florence area of Alabama and lived with his own son Lawrence. Whatever you can tell me (if anything) would be great. I would like to know any other surnames associated with this Atchley line. John had two daughters named Virgie (she married a Holt and lived in Wayne County, TN) and Laura (she died young), and he was married to Valeria Southern Atchley. She is buried in the Pigg Cemetery in Wayne County. I haven't located where John or George are buried.

Daniel E. Atchley - stuck & need help :)

Hi Atchley experts. I have hit a major road block in my research. I am looking for information on Daniel E. Atchley b:24 March 1872 in Texas, d:July 1962 in Elk City, Beckham Co., Oklahoma. I know he lived in Hamilton and Ochiltree, TX; also lived in Washita, Custer, OK; married Arabella Jernigan and had the following children: Fenimore (my Great-Grandfather), Leonard, Lillian, Rita, and Paul. I can't seem to find definite info on who his parents were. There is a D.E. Atchley in 1880 census in Red River, TX with parents as R.S. and E. Atchley, but I cannot find clear evidence beyond the initials as to whether this is my Daniel and/or that his father is Robert Seth or some other R.S. Does anyone else have a Daniel E. Atchley in their findings? I'd love to get past this tree stump!

Thanks,
Cheri

Re: Maud Horn was wrong!
Maud Horn's Atchley family history : including Long, Maples, Scoggin, and Griffith families was first published in the late 1930’s. Mrs. Horn did a great deal of work collecting information on all these families and her work continues to be a useful resource. However, the book relied often on hearsay in the form of letters from descendents - sometimes three or four generations removed from the persons discussed with little or no effort given to verifying the information. As a result the book is reasonable accurate regarding the generation that was living when it was published, but is less and less reliable with preceding generations. Care should be taken to verify information taken from the book.

An example is the family of Rev. George W. Long 1771-1849 and his wife, Elizabeth Maples.

1). Mrs. Horn identifies Rev. Long’s parents as John Long and Mary Haynes. She says that John Long married Mary Haynes in Bedford County, Virginia, but lists no date. She says George Long was born in 1771. -- Recorded in Bedford County, Virginia, under date of August 3, 1772, is the marriage of John Long and Mary Haynes. Stephen Sanders, surety. Consent of Mary herself. This is a year after George was born. In addition, John Long and Mary Hanes removed to Woodford County, Kentucky where they appear in census records until their deaths. John died there in 1832 leaving a will in which he names all his children, and there isn’t a George listed.

2) Maud Horn says that during his boyhood George Long came with his parents to Tennessee to settle in the northern part of Sevier County. There he married during 1793 to Nancy Maples. - - George Long and Elizabeth Maples were married 9 Jun 1791 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. George appears in the 1800 census there. He came to Sevier County when he obtained a land grant in 1807 along with members of the Maples and Atchley families. All of his children who were born prior to 1806 show their birth place as Virginia in census records.

3) Maud Horn says that George’s father, John Long , built an overshot watermill and after his death the mill was operated by his son-in-law, Thomas Langston, who had married Nancy Long. - - Thomas Langston was first married Louisa Atchley 10 Jan 1833,in Sevier County, Tennessee when he was 19 years old, and then to Amy O. Atchley in 19 May 1861 in the same county. There is no indication that he ever married Nancy Long, or that he ever had a wife named Nancy. He does list his occupation as Miller in census records beginning in 1860. His father-in-law at that time was an Atchley, and there is a record in 1861 of an Atchley Mill in Sevier County.

I looked up the address and found the number and called Sunday. A local girl bought it after I left on Saturday.I was going to buy it and then hope to find someone interested in it,but I was too late.I feel so bad about it. I usually go ahead and buy these treasures then find family and I don't know why I left it except I hoped a family member would end up with it. I can give you her name,CG Harris of Rockford Tn. I don't know if she has anything left, but there were books from college and some letters to an Atchley with 2cent stamps on them, etc. If you contact her please let her know that we are family researchers looking for precious artifacts of our families only. I don'twant to scare her. She really just wants to know that the items will be treasured. Sorry again.

Hi! I was at an Estate sale today on Andy Harris Rd. in Blount County and a Mrs. Gail Harris had alot of ATCHLEY family memoirbilia. There was a wonderful photo album. She was asking 20.00 for it. A lady told me there was no family members they knew of who would be interested. I can't believe that. If you know someone interested, they could probably call her and find out if she still has them. There was also Army hats, school books, etc. I do so hope you find an Atchley in the Blount/Sevier area that would like to have them.

I found Letty also divorced and living with her son, John H. who is my husband's great grandfather by the way of his daughter Laura Atchley Bentley. I have not been able to confirm Letty's maiden name. I found her listed as "Letty Martin" by someone. Do you have her confirmed as "Myers?" I have tried to find where they were married and divorced by checking some courthouse records. Do you have any additional information for her? I have tried to find the dates that she and George W. died.

Thanks for your reply.
Shirley Bentley

I am looking for the parents of Thomas Atchley who married Alsey Gipson grandaughter of Abraham and Alsey Atchley. I find them in 1860 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, 1880 Marshall County, Alabama and last in 1900 Marshall County, Alabama living with their son Thomas, Jr. and his family. According to the 1900 census Thomas senior was born in Tennessee in 1815, but other dates range from 1818 to 1823. Any help would be appreciated. Charles

I just so happened to come along this posting. Actually with no intention of doing so. However, my father a few years back was talking about going to one of our family reunions. I looked back then trying to find the next and had no luck. So I posted your post link to my brother on facebook telling him we missed it. My Uncle Allen thought I knew about it ahead of time (I didnt) and my Aunt Inez facebooked me that this is an annual event and she gets a card every year but never goes. She said a cousing usually does. How on earth do I have the rest of my family get notification of the family reunion? thanks, Lory Atchley Calabrese of SC
