There is going to be a big Aten reunion of sorts for descendants of the three brothers (Cal, Ira, Eddie) who were Texas Rangers in the 1880s and 1890s at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame this coming week (May 9-10, 2013) in Waco, Texas. I know that several of my first cousins (descended from Cal) will be there, and I understand that at least one descendant from Ira will be there as well. I haven't heard if any of Eddie's descendants will be there. There will be a symposium on the three Aten brothers who were in the Rangers. Calling all Atens! (My mother was Cal's youngest daughter.)

Another message that has been around for years. My line of the Aten family - my great grandfather was William Amsey Aten, son of Alfred Cory Aten and Amanda Shannon Aten. William had 5 brothers and one sister. One of his brothers was Howard Aten, Sr listed in the 1900 and 1930 US census in Wilkes Barre, Luzerne Co. PA, with wife Sarah (Cochrane). I have Howard's date of birth as Sept 1868 and date of death as 1935. In 1900 census he had a son John listed 6 yrs old. Another brother was Herbert Bertram Aten married to Mary. Herbert and Mary are listed in the 1940 US census in Kingston PA as in-laws living in the household with Robert P Peterman and his wife Helen L Aten Peterman - their daughter.

I hope this helps.

Jerold Wilmer "Jerry" Aten

Jerry was the son of Henry B. Aten and Ruby F. Schoch. The following is a newspaper story from the Orange County(CA) Register.

Published: June 7, 2008 3:00 a.m.

After 65 years, couple inseparable – even in death

By DOUG IRVING
The Orange County Register

Santa Ana -- Jerry Aten didn't last a day without his wife Marilyn.

She died on a Monday evening last month. He tried to give her one last kiss, but he was too unsteady to get out of his wheelchair. He held her hand, laid his head on her bed, and cried.

Their friends always use the same word to describe Jerry and Marilyn: inseparable. And so, 23 hours later, when his caretaker heard his breath go heavy and deep, and then stop, it seemed to them more a gift than a surprise.

Doctors who work with the elderly say it's not unusual for the death of one spouse to make the other feel more at peace with dying as well. Some researchers even believe that the loss of a loved one can stun the heart and cause symptoms similar to a heart attack, a phenomenon often called "broken heart syndrome."

But what happened with Jerry, 89, and Marilyn, 85, left even their pastor searching for words. "It's almost like they planned their departure perfectly," said Rev. Wilfredo Benitez of St. Anselm of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Garden Grove.

" I don't have any explanation for that. I can't say whether God planned it," he added. "It just seemed to me that the bond between the two of them was so strong that, even in death, they couldn't be parted."

They met on a blind date. He was a Michigan farm boy stationed with the Army in Northern California. She was a small-town California girl who always called him "Honey."

They were married 65 years ago in April. He went to work as a chemist; she stayed home and raised their only son, David. They bought a house with a big front lawn on a quiet street in Garden Grove, spent their weekends rooting for the Angels, spent their summers traveling the country in their camper.

There were rough spots, of course, but they did their best to live by the rule they had set early in their relationship. Never go to bed angry.

" There was always a little touch," said Pat Smith, a neighbor who was close to the Atens. "He'd sit down and she'd serve him dinner, and she'd touch him on the shoulder."

Marilyn was rushed to the hospital with stomach pain on Christmas Eve a few years ago. Doctors found cancer, removed two-thirds of her colon, and told her she would probably die in a matter of months. But she beat the cancer into remission with chemotherapy.

Jerry, meanwhile, was starting to get confused. Names didn't come to him so quickly anymore. One night, he walked out the door and wandered down the street. Doctors diagnosed Alzheimer 's disease.

But even on his worst days, he knew who Marilyn was. A few times, she checked him into a care center, and he would cry for her when she left. She brought him back home every time; "I can't stand not having him here," she told friends.

The pain in her stomach returned earlier this year, and she knew. She told her son, David, "If it's my time to go, it's my time to go." She and Jerry, she said, "had a great life together."

She died at home, in her bed. Jerry tried to lift himself out of his wheelchair to kiss her good-bye, then fell back and laid his head on her bed, next to her arm. He didn't say anything, just cried softly.

It was 11:40 p.m. on May 5.

Jerry woke up the next morning, talked to his son, greeted a neighbor. But he began crying again in the afternoon, and he was still crying when his caretaker, Theresa Palepale, helped him into bed that night.

She heard his breathing change and then stop about an hour later. She felt for a pulse, but didn't find one.

It was 10:40 p.m. on May 6.

Physicians would later determine that Marilyn had died of gastric cancer, and Jerry had died 23 hours later, to the minute, of cardiopulmonary arrest. They were buried in Riverside National Cemetery.

Their obituary ran in the newspaper on the day of the funeral. "Aten, Marilyn and Jerry," it read. "Together for eternity."

Aten DNA

A while back, a descendant of Adrian Hendrickse Aten had his y-DNA tested. The initial results suggested that he was R1b M269+, which didn't tell us much, because R1b M269+ is the largest haplogroup in western Europe.

I upgraded his results recently & was stunned to see that he is actually L21+, which is nested deep inside of M269+. L21+ is most prevalent in the British Isles, particularly Ireland and Scotland.

This tentatively confirms the tradition of Scottish origins for this family.

I think it would make sense for a few more patrilineal descendants of the American Aten family to get tested.

I would be willing to pay for the test of one of the patrilineal Aten descendant of Aaron Kimble Aten (1812-1901)and Dorcas Glass, who were my great-great-great grandparents.

Timothy Peterman
Kansas City, MO

I've seen a lot of online trees that indicate that Garret Aten (b. 1763) was his father, but I haven't seen any sources that might verify this information. Anyone else out there who's been investigating this link and might have additional information?

Thanks,
Paul Luber
paul_luber@hotmail.com

Just saw your 2005 post! My mother was an Aten, and I'm trying to find out when her father, Benjamin Franklin Aten,
died, and where he is buried--probably Garden Grove or High Point, Iowa. (This is NOT the Benjamin Franklin Aten whose social security info is online. The one I need was born in 1868.)
Many thanks.
Let me know if you want any info about my mother's family.

Re: Calvin Grant Aten & Mattie Jo Kennedy

Cal and Jo Aten were my grandparents. The two children in the photo would be my aunt CASSIE (not Carrie) and uncle Calvin.

Cal was born in Illinois in 1868. His father was a Methodist circuit rider who had served in the Civil War. The family moved to Round Rock, TX, in the 1870s.

Cal had been a Texas Ranger in the late 1880s/early 1890s, following in his brother's (Ira) footsteps --Ira is in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco, TX. Another brother also joined the Texas Rangers.

Cal and Jo got married and they moved to the Texas Panhandle, where he was a section foreman on the XIT Ranch, at the time, the largest contiguous ranch in the world (and the method by which the State of Texas financed the construction of the Texas State Capitol building in Austin). Cal later had a hardware/general store in Canyon, TX, and a farm/ranch in Lelia Lake, TX, where he and Jo lived the rest of their lives.

Cal and Jo had the following children (not sure of the order): Cassie (f), Calvin (m), Rena (f), Lamar (m), Quinn (m), Lannie (f), Austin (m), and Moodye (f -- and my mother). Cal died in the mid 1930s and Jo died in the late 1940s, after my father and mother married (1947).

Patrick Quinn Mooney

Yes, we have info about this family, Henry C was my husbands grandad. Archie Pharr was the son of Henry C. I don't think Archie Pharr was born in Garza county, but probably in Blanco Co. Archie Pharrs first wifes name was Edna. They lived at Harper, Tx. when she died. Tell me what you want and I will send what I can.

I saw your note from some time ago regarding there being letters from a John Auten in Nebraska, a Civil War Vet, corresponding with an Eastern College professor.

This interests me very much, as my Auten line went to Nebraska after the war (in 1871) and I don't know any other Autens who did. Are these letters still in existance? Could we get transcripts of them? Most interesting. nancy

Re: Aten Cemetery Photos

Sue, hope your offer is still good, as I just now read your post. My 4th great-grandfather was the Richard Aten, 1721-1809, on your list, so of course the others are my family too. It is said that Richard- also known as Dirck or Derick Aten (old Long Island Dutch), crossed the Delaware with General Washington. I live in the Midwest and may not be able to visit my Aten ancestors cemetery, so would very much appreciate being able to see their graves. My Barnes family lived across the Delaware in Ramseyburg. John and Catherine Aten Barnes went to Luzerne County, Pa. Hope to hear from you soon. Bonnie Barnes Worley
