I remember meeting a cousin named Barbara who was "Snake" Ates' daughter. I wonder if you are the same Barbara. I have lived in Gainesville, Florida for over twenty years but visit back in Milton frequently. I think we should organize an Ates reunion. My name is Barbara McDonnell and I live in Pensacola, Fl.
My grandmoither was Frances Ates, although I never met her.
My father was James Henderson. I met Evelyn and visited her a few times in Milton. Did she ever mention me to you?
She and Eunice picked me out at a fashion show years ago when my daughter modeled. They said i looked like their aunt, Frances Ates ( MY grandmother ) They had never met me or even seen a picture.

Thomas Ates, Santa Rosa County Florida, was my g/grandfather. His son, William, was my grandfather. My dad was also named William and had the following siblings:
Maxwell (Peanut), Thomas, Jeff, Henry,Cenie, Leacy, Frances, Tunie, Gypsy. There were two or three other siblings who died before I was born in 1936.

Francis Ates (Stribling) was my father's sister. My grandfather, William Ates, had ten living children when I was born in 1936. I think he had two or three children who died before I was born. My dad was also William Ates, aka Willie. He died in 1972. All of my dad's siblings are gone now, as are all my siblings except one brother who lives in Milton, Florida.

It's interesting to read about all the Ates folks around the world. Evelyn Ates was my sister and lived in Milton, Florida until her death. I was born in Milton but haven't lived there for over forty years. My grandfather was William Ates (aka Papa). My dad, William, was one of ten or twelve children. Thomas, Buster, Frances, Jeff, etc, etc. were all my uncles, aunts and cousins. There are still many Ateses in Santa Rosa county, Florida.

My grandmother was Frances Ates, daughter of William.
She must have been named after her grandmother. Thomas Ates was William's father i've been told. Frances had a brother named Jeff.

My father was Frances's son, James ( Buster) Henderson. I didn't meet him until I was 56 years old at a renion in Milton someone told me about. I look like my father.
I've alwasy been curious about the native American side I was told about. I have met Buster's other daughter Martha who is 4 years younget than me. Never knew about her until 10 years ago when I went to see her in Georgia.

I never met Frances and didn't meet my father until age 56.

I graduated from Waipahu High School in Hawaii in 1955.
My stepdad was stationed there with the Navy.
Sounds like we had similar experiences growing up.
No one would talk about my dad either.
I have so much to tell you. It is so exciting to meet you. I'm leaving for the pool right now. I go to aqua aerobics every afternoon. Buster told Patty and me about the native American connection when we met in Milton. Had never heard that before.

My father was Buster Henderson and my grandmother was Frances Ates. I didn't meet Buster until I was 56 years old. I had never even seen a picture. I never met Frances.
I was born in Bagdad, Fl in 1937. He never married my mother.
I met my half sister, Martha 10 years ago.
I had met her son, Tim, when I met Buster at a family reunion in Milton , Fl. He told Martha that she had a sister in Pensacola and at first she didn't believe it.
I'm in touch with Bill Stribling in Americus, Ga.

My aunt got in touch with a cousin, Evelyn Ates and she told me about the reunion.
I look like Buster. I visited him in Georgia before he died.

Sam & Lilly were my grandparents. I remember visiting them on the farm. Using the outhouse,feeding and chasing the chickens, getting water from the well, slaughtering a hog, cooking it and eating it! Grandmas banana pudding, her quilts the cuckoo clock.

There are many people with that name in this area Mostly common between Georgia and Florida. Her father was Willis H. C. Ates.

I myself live in The Woodlands, TX area and have several other family members who live in other parts of Texas, Virginia,Missouri,Colorado etc. etc. Lots of our family were in the military hence we settled all over the country. My Dad's name is Leroy D. Ates, uncles Ellis,Jack & Jeff. I believe my grandfather Jeff Sr. was from Missouri.

My last name is also Ates and I have known my name to be very rare and different from other families it is so good to finally see someonw with the last name of mines. But I still have that gap in knowing whom my actual family was from where they are orgin. To ask I do live in the Texas area East Texas but its just only me and my sister that have the last name Ates by blood from my father and his father he never knew. Yes, I have heard that. However the photos I have seen all show blond people with blue eyes. Since the first one I have seen a photo of came to the US in 1803 and appears to be extremely fair skinned and haired I would be astounded to find out that he was of Turkish ancestry. There are also no customs or traditions in this family that would indicate that ancestry. I have also heard that this last name might actually be Van Ates or Yates.

Well I am Annette Powell, My Grandma Bessie Mae Ates Humprey is the daughter of Sameul and Lillie Maude Ates.

In case any Mississippi Ates researchers show up--this is an interesting book with some information on the Ates line in Jones and Covington counties. These Ates are most definitely not of Turkish origin. Supposedly from the Netherlands but that is not verified. The ones in this book are intermarried with Patton, Temple, Cranford, Sullivan.
