There are families with the Atha surname in the U.S. that descended from George Athy/Athey, who was born in Galway, Ireland in 1642 and came to Maryland circa 1662. Some of his descendants changed the name to ATHON, ATHA and ATHANS. My family ended up with it spelled ATHEY.

You might try some of these various spellings. If you know of a male descendant of your great-grandfather, Henry Madison Atha, you should suggest they participate in the Athey DNA study. You can read more about it here: http://www.hprg.com/athey/

Best of luck with your research,
Darlene Athey Hill

Re: Atha

Hi, my name is Dave Atha and I live in the UK. Atha is a name from the north of England, with most Athas being found in Yorkshire - a large north eastern county of England. I am originally from Leeds, as were my parents and paternal granparents. My brother, an archaeologist, did some research and reckons that the name is Norse and came into northern England with the Vikings. Originally it was probably At't'Hay, as in John At't'Hay. In Yorkshire people who speak the local dialect often drop 'the' in front of a word, using just a 't' sound i.e. are you going to t'school? The purer form of the name may in fact be Athey - another surname common in Yorkshire.

Anyhow, it appears that many Athas left the UK for a better life in the USA. There are certainly now many more Athas in the States than there are this side of the pond!

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Daev.

The Athey lineage is currently being re-examined. Previous research has suggested that all of the surname and it's variations, descended from the common ancestor of Gerard de Athee. Current research, combined with the DNA results of participants bearing the surname has found this assumption was not correct. He recieved a land grant in Illinois for his services as a Drum-Major in the war of 1812. Thomas died in 1870.
I show 1834 in Logan Co., OH, as the birthdate for Thomas Atha, the son of Thomas Atha and Abigale Miller. I have Sabina Hervey as his wife, with children; Ferguson, Edward, Amanda and Rose (no dates). It is possible he may have been married more than once, and the initial "M" could be for Miller.

Amy,
Yes, this is the same line. My grandfather was Jim Atha and my grandmother was Lula Miller Atha. She died in 1954, the same year that I was born. Grandpa's dad and mom were George and Maggie. Grandpa always referred to his grandfather as Lou. But, I believe his name was Louenza. I believe the George Atha was a farmer. Jim Atha and several of his brothers were coal miners and I believe that two were killed in the mines.

Most of the old family are buried on Sandlick Mtn. behind the Mattsville Church. The French Atha family lived in another "holler" and are buried there but I not sure exactly where it is.

My mother is their daughter, Daisy Ann Atha Penny (br 4/1/1919). She had three brothers Cecil, James Peter, and Joe Atha. Joe is the only one still alive of the boys. Mom and dad are still both alive.

I heard of the Daniels name for years and knew that there were several connections. The Wiseman name is another in which we have multiple connections to.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

They had at least 7 children, including half brothers/sisters that come in somewhere along the line. I'm not sure of the connection. One of their children was Velma Irene Daniel.
Paul,
I have a Thomas M. Atha/Athey born about 1833. According to the 1880 census records he was born in Illinois (although I don't know if this is true). The census also shows that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maryland. He married Amanda Dilman in 1853 in Clermont Co. Ohio. He had a daughter, Margaret (b. 1853) and a son, Charles (b. 1855), both born in Clermont CO. Ohio. I am not aware of any other children.

Any idea if this is the Thomas that was born to Thomas and Abigal Atha??

I, too, am a direct descendent of William Atha born 27 Feb 1816 and who is the son of Hezekiah W. Athey.

From my information the name of his wife is incorrect. That came from a published biography, I believe. The correct wife's name is Frances Kember born 1819, Pennsylvania.

Please let's compare data. You can reach me at karcoll@charter.net

The "brand" mark on the tool is a red horseshoe with a capital letter "A" in the middle with "The Atha Tool Company" around the edge. They were well known for the planes, blacksmith tools and hammers. Finding only Atha on the tool is more difficult that finding Atha-Stanley. I have found a small tack hammer head for my Dad. I recently found out the Atha's left Scotland in the 1640's before going to England. Then there were 7 brothers that came on a ship to America and all went different directions upon arrival. (What are boot sales?)
Missouri, USA

I found an old victorian album full of photos in this shop. They are all in great shape. I wrote down some of the names: Albert Carty, Bessie Greene, JT and Hommer Atha, and Grady Leach. Their were more Carty's and more Leach's but I didn't write them down. If anyone is interested in this album....please contact me. Thanks!
-Beth
bgiacalone@accessunited.com

Athey/Athy/Atha/Athan Y-Chromosome Project

The Athey/Atha/Athy and related surnames y-chromosome project is under way. As you know, the y-chromosome is passed down from father to son, just as surnames usually are. Every one of your male Athey/Atha/Athy ancestors would have the same identical y-chromosome, except for relatively rare mutations. Therefore, testing of the Y-chromosome can confirm that distant cousins of the same surname have the same common patrilineal ancestor. This project seeks to test the hypothesis that all males of the Athey/Atha surname are descendants of the historical figure, Gerard de Athee, a protege of King John in the early 13th century. Please join the project and participate. The sample is taken with a cheek swab with a cotton swab. More information can be obtained from the project web site, where you can also follow the progress of the project.

Here is a link to the web site for the Athey Surname Y-Chromosome Project

http://home.comcast.net/~whitathey/index.htm

To participate, go to the following link, scroll to the bottom and fill out the form:

http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=L17820&am...
