Hi Bev, I know I'm coming across this pretty late, but I believe we have the same James and Sarah (Cube) Atherton. I was just wondering which of their children is your ancestor. I have James Atherton, born abt 1791 in England, and Sarah Cube, born abt 1796 in Scotland. They married on May 6, 1817. The children I have them with is: 1 Charles (born abt 1821); Elizabeth (born abt 1826); Ann (born abt 1832); and William (born 1834 in Penrith)my husband's 6x-great grandfather. Do you have this same information? Hope to hear from you soon.
Jessica

Hi Derek, I am sorry to say but there are a quite a number of Athertons on the criminal register. One was sentenced to death for stealing a sheep. Not that I condone theft but felt that particular sentance rather harsh. Having said that families were starving in those days with no social security benefits and imagine times were very hard for both the plaintif and defendant. I would think someone would possibly starve or live as a result of his crime.

Some were transported too.

Life was and still is cruel.

Here's what I have on Humphrey and his daughter Elizabeth. Your Elizabeth can not be this Humphrey's daughter -- though the other names you mention: Weeks, Wales, etc are often associated with Humphrey's daughter.

HUMPHREY Atherton
Birth: 04 Sep 1607 in Winwick, Lancashire, England; Up Holland Chapel
Death: 17 Sep 1661 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, USA
Burial: Upham's Corner, Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts,USA
Marriage: 1627 in Preston, Lancashire, England
Father: EDMUND Atherton
Mother: Mary
Wife: MARY ( ) (Probably NOT Wales)
Birth: 30 Apr 1613 in Winstanley, Wigan, Lancashire,England
Death: 17 Aug 1672 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, USA
Burial: Upham's Corner, Dorchester, Suffolk, MA,USA

First Child:
F Gender:
ELIZABETH (sometimes called Catherine) Atherton
Female
Birth: Abt. 28 Sep 1628 in Winwick, Lancashire, England
Death: 15 May 1678 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, USA
Burial: Abt. 15 May 1678 in Upham's Corner, Dorchester, Suffolk,Massachusetts,USA
Marriage: Abt. 1650 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, USA; age of oldest child
Spouses: TIMOTHY Mather (b: 1628)
Re: Elizabeth ATHERTON, Sussex, England, 1676

There has been much confusion over Catherine/Elizabeth Atherton. I believe she was known by both names. There is no doubt that Elizabeth Atherton (d. of Humphrey Atherton) was the first wife of Timothy Mather.

Here's research I've done to date.

"Major-Gen Humphrey Atherton of Dorchester" ..., Frederick Lewis Weis, 1936 p.19-20
Lists Elizabeth , m. Timothy Mather ... and lists info on their children.

The second wife of Timothy Mather was Elizabeth Weeks. There are several theories on who she was:
1) Daughter of Amiel Weeks
2) Widow of William Weeks
Depends on which reference you want to use.

Some feel Elizabeth Weekes was the widow of "William Weekes, clerk of the Writts died Dec 5 1677" (Ibid. 29). But "Colonial Families in the U.S.", Mackenzie, (1907) says she is the daughter of Amiel Weeks and so does "Major-Gen Humphrey Atherton of Dorchester" ..., Frederick Lewis Weis, 1936, p.19. The "Record Commissionsers" (p.5) does show an "Elizabeth Weekes the daughter of Ammiel Weekes was born the 18:8:1657" (there was also an Elizabeth Weekes the Daughter of William Weeks born 16: 7: 1653.")
Torrey says William Weeks did NOT marry Elizabeth Atherton. (See below).
"Timothy Mather (1628-1685) & 2/wf Elizabeth ( ? ) Weeks (?1631-1710), w William; 20 Mar 1678, prob. 1678/79; Dorchester/Roxbury" ("New England Marriages Prior to 1700", Torrey)
"William Weekes (1628/9-1677) & Elizabeth (Atherton)? (no) (1631-1710), m/2 Timothy Mather ?1679 (she was 1/wf of Timothy Mather): b. 1652; Dorchester" (Ibid, Torrey, p792)

"The Great Migration, 1634-35 (2005). p.88:
(Second child of Rev. Richard Mather)
"Timothy Mather, b. about 1628; m. (1) 1651 Elizabeth Atherton (eldest known child b. Dorchester 5 Sept 1651) (DVR 6, ie Dorchester Vital Records), daughter of Humphrey Atherton (1637, Dorchester) ... (see Humphrey) ... ; m. (2) Dorchester 20 Mar 1678/9 Elizabeth Weeks (DVR 24)." ...
"(on 27 Sept 1661, administration on the 'estate of the late Major General Humphry Atherton' was granted to 'Jonathan Atherton his eldest son and Timothy Mather, James Throwbridge and Odadiah Swift 3 of his sons-in-law' (SPR 4:31); SLR 6:181)).

There doesn't appear to be any proof which Elizabeth Weeks Timothy married. -- though if the "widow" written in on Horace Mather book is correct, it is most probably William Weeks widow, whose surname appears unknown. Note since "The Great Migration" does not supply any further info on her that means to me who she was is still not known/proven.

I'd love proof of who Elizabeth Weeks is -- the one who married Timothy Mather and/or the Elizabeth who married William Weeks.

Re: ATHERTON - One-Name Study

Derek,

Hi, I have just strted looking into the Atherton family. The Athertons I am mainly concerned with lived in Atherton Lancashire in the 1800's Richard Atherton was a corn Miller at old Hall Farm, from 1825 till ab 1863, although I beleive this may actually be earlier, he apparently fell into the river and drowned, after this time Old Hall Mill was taken over by James Harrison who Married Jane Atherton (I beleive Richards Grand Daughter) in 1873, On the Marriage certificate it has her father down as Ralph Atherton, a farmer, but I have as yet, not been able to link this in, her mother was Ann, but I am not sure if she was Richards daughter or Daughter in law. Jane and John went on to have a Duaghter, Ann who is my Mothers Grandmother, she was known as Ann Atherton Harrison.

I last night managed to get all the Census info printed off for 1841 - 1901 on each census the family was listed as living as Old Hall Mill, we beleive this was demolished in ab1920.

I thought mistakenly researching the Athertons may be an easy task how wrong I was so any information you have that may help me would be fantastic, I can be reached at the following address.

suzie.mills@yahoo.co.uk

I will have a look at your websites later tonight.

I look forward to hearing from you, and perhaps we can help each other.

Regards
Suzie

Derek
I have been researching the name of Atherton for some time. In fact Atherton appears in my family tree twice as my grandmother was born Margaret Kirby and married my grandfather Joseph Atherton. Her grandmother was born Margaret Atherton and married a Kirby. The two lines of Atherton are not linked. I would be interested in helping to establish a One-Name Study on Athertons.
Yours
Geoffrey C Atherton

I am a descendent of Francis Blakely. I don't believe Francis Atherton married his half sister. Nancy Kennedy was a half sister to Francis Blakely. His Mother married Andrew Kennedy and their daughter was Nancy Kennedy who married Francis Atherton. I really do not know much on Francis Atherton. I am searching for the name of Francis Blakely's father. It may have been John but I have no records indicating so. If you have any information on the first marriage of Mary Kennedy, I would love to hear from you.

Hi there,

Just a note to let you people know that I am about to start a One-Name study on the name ATHERTON!

This is going to be one monumental task and I am looking for like minded people to assist in different regions. Any ged files of ATHERTON names would be gratefully received, likewise I may be able to help with that missing link/brick wall when I am further down the line and extend my current database. (In England/Wales I have the following numbers - Births (1837-1871) total 5182, Marriages (1837-1861) total 1456 and Deaths (1837-1861) total 2183 - and these numbers are increasing daily!).

Additionally I am taking on the task of Group Administrator for the DNA Group of ATHERTON - please consider participating!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Derek
http://www.one-name.org/profiles/atherton.html
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Atherton/default.aspx

Effie Atherton b1907 - Actress and Singer

Seeking any information about this woman. I don't know if this was her birth name or whether it was a stage name. I know she was in a Broadway show in 1925/6 as I have found her going to and returning from USA at that time. She was also in 2 films (in 1934 and 1935) after that I have no other info.

According to my late grandfather she was his cousin.

Many thanks.

Mary
