From "Early Settlers in the Ozarks" by Garner J. Phillips -
"William B. Atkinson with whom this geneology starts was located in Lawrence Co. TN in 1830. Next door to him was an Anuel Atkinson aged 60 - 70. Anuel could quite possibly have been the father of William B. In 1840 William B. was in Giles Co. TN. Next door to him was JESSE W. ATKINSON......Elizabeth Atkinson m Jonathan Helms in Greene Co {MO} in 1843. It is very likely she was the widow of Jesse W., since she had children at the time by the name of Atkinson. Amoung them was a boy named Anuel and a boy named Jesse W. It is a logical supposition that three Atkinson brothers, William B., Jesse W. and Benjamin came to MO ca 1840-41. Jesse W. either died en route or soon after arrival in MO."
I am descended from William B. I have found that his father was William Nathaniel (Anuel and various spellings thereof). I have references that tell me that William Nathaniel's parent were John Adkinson and Frances Elizabeth Wilbur. Frances is said to be part Cherokee. But, I have yet to find any other information on John and Frances.
Back to Willaim Nathaniel - He married Elizabeth Prince. They had 13 children- William B., Celia E., Millie, Starling, Goodell, Benjamin, Mary Martha, Agnes, John, Barbara, Rachael, Harvey and JESSE W.
According to an LDS entry by Edna Thomas of Salt Lake City, Jesse Adkinson b. 1802, Wayne Co. TN. Father - William Nathaniel, Mother - Elizabeth. Source is listed as family Bible of Eliza Celia Adkinson.
I have a note from "Early TN Tax Lists" listing a Jesse Adkinson in Williamson Co. TN in 1815.
From "Webster County, MO Deed Book A, 1855-1860"
p 16 -
"p244 18 Nov 1857 Henry King, Sheriff, selling 50 A of S36 T30 R19 W, to M.S.Bailey, $210 to be divided between Johnathan Helms, Elizabeth Helms, Mary Adkinson, Anuel Adkinson, and Jonathan Helms, guardian and curator of Jesse W. Adkinson, minor heirs of Jesse W. Adkinson, dec'd"
I do have a note on the 1840 census that shows a Jesse Atkinson as head of household, with two males between the ages of 10-15, two males between 15-20, one male between 60 - 70, one female under 5, one female 20-30, one female 30 - 40, one female 50 - 60.
I'd like to hear anything else you have on Jesse and am very interested in anything about John and Frances.
