I have a brick wall in my tree of a woman named Dorthea who married a man named John Lyle in Lancaster County PA and they named their son Atlee. There may be a possibility that her maiden name was Atlee. They were a poor family from Bart Township Lancaster County PA. Does any one have any ideas of where I might find out about the Atlee lines that are not so well off and famous?

I also am trying to identify Katharine Selmser. I have a blanket that woven by her which has been passed down thru generations to Katharine, Katherine or similar names.
The last person I have been able to trace is my great grandmother, Katherine Hollenbeck Briggs. Her father was Phillip Hollenbeck and her mother, Magdalen (no maiden name), Hollenbeck. If you are still on Ancestry.com, I hope I will hear from you.

Hi,

I have quite a bit of information on the Atlee family of Isleworth, Middlesex England. My particular interest is the line Jonah, Jonah, Anthony, William, Henry and Frances Susan. Frances emigrated to Australia in 1854. Anthony was a painter & glazer, William a carpenter & organ builder while Henry was a builder.

Happy to exchange info with others interested in this family.

I saw your post and it surprised me. Dallas is my father and my grandfather's (Ralph) family came out of northern Illiois - around Genoa. Dallas had 2 brothers David and Larry both deceased. Not sure if the wife listed in the bible was his first (Ellen) or 2nd wife (Linda). Ralph married Pansy Marie McCue(anglicised spelling of surname). She was from just south of Lansing Michigan where an extensive family network had settled the area. Ralph and Marie raised their family in the Lansing area.

I believe this could be a part of my great-great-grandmother, Katharine Selmser, going back to the early 1800's. Do you have any information that might help me find information of her and her family? Your help will be very much appreciated.

You seem to a lot of background on the Atlee Family. A friend of mine ran across an old Bible that had information on the Atlee Family. This is what I remember of the genealogy pages:

Dallas Atlee, son of Ralph Atlee, was born in 1932. Other names were in the Bible...Dallas' wife and her father's name. Dallas is now deceased. Does anyone know how this family ties in?

Tami

Hon. William Augustus Atlee of York County, PA

Hon. William Augustus Atlee

Hon. William Augustus Atlee was born at Philadelphia, July 1, 1735. He moved to Lancaster at a early age, and was admitted to the Lancaster bar in 1758 and to the York bar the next year, on the 24th of July. Mr. Atlee practiced in Lancaster until August 16, 1777, when he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. In 1791, under the new constitution, he was appointed president judge of the Second District. The first court held by him in York County was on the 31st of October of that year. In 1739, Judge Atlee contracted the yellow fever in Philadelphia while attending court, and died at his seat near Wright’s ferry on the Susquehanna on the 10th of September. He is described “as a prominent citizen and an active and leading Whig during the Revolution.” The high positions he held sufficiently indicate his character.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Yes, the Atlees do run heavily to doctors! John Light Atlee Sr. and his brother Washington were both respected doctors; the former was influential in the founding of the American Medical Association and served as its president in the 1880s, and the latter was a vice-president. John Light Atlee Jr. was also a doctor, as was my father, and my brother (also named John Light) is starting his final year of pre-med in the fall. It's very much a family tradition!

you would think that it would be easy to find an ancestor from such a notable family that fought during the civil war, but there are few listings for atlee's..am going to ask my gettysburg buddies to dig a little too, they have resources that i don't have...

just in case anyone needs this following info:

frank edward atlee (10/26/47-5/8/99) had a son whose name is edward atlee, and he lives in new jersey. the home they have was frank's mom's home...her last name (maiden name) was simpson (or simson, not sure on the spelling). she passed away a few months after frank, at the assisted living home in petersburg (or near petersburg) florida. i believe she was in her late 80's. i never had the pleasure of meeting her, i know i would have liked her a lot. his father passed away sorta young too if i remember right.

frank was her only son. i think i remember him telling me his father was a doctor (which seems the norm for the family), who married later in life. i know his mom was from ireland.

not sure if this info helps anyone but i put it up here just in case....

wils :)

this is the info i found on one of the atlee's...if this is correct, this particular ancestor did not fight at gettysburg....he was mustered in and out during a 3 month stint which is what was done at the start of the war.

am thinking there might be two (or one) other fellows of atlee descent that were at the battle of gettysburg...

before frank died, i remember him telling me (this was back in march of 99. he passed away on may 18 of '99) a while back.

the mystery deepens a little doesn't it :)

wils
I'm a descendant of the Lancaster and Philadelphia Atlees -- Dr. John Light Atlee was my great-great grandfather, whose son JLA Jr. moved to Chattanooga sometime in the late 1800s. JLA Jr. had a daughter, Marjorie (my grandmother), and a son, also named Frank, who was killed in World War II. Your Frank might also have been a grandson of JLA Sr., or perhaps his brother Dr. Washington Lemuel Atlee -- the ages are about right, and that would make him a first cousin of my great-uncle (perhaps the source of the name?). FWIW, I too was told as a child that our ancestors fought at Gettysburg, but I don't know any more information about it than that.

I can add to one branch of the Atlee tree. Joseph Augustus Atlee, born Sept. 7, 1858 in Tyrone, Blair, Pa was a son of Samuel John Atlee and Jane Stewart, who was a son of Joseph Augustus Atlee and Amelia Dehaven, who was a son of Samuel John Atlee and Sarah Richardson, who was a son of William Atlee and Jane Alcock, the immigrants. Joseph Augustus Atlee (born 1858) married Mary H. "Mamie" Harper, a daughter of John M. Harper and Margaret Barr of Huntingdon and Mifflin Counties. John M. Harper was a son of Robert Harper and Nancy Dorman, and Margaret Barr was the eldest child of Samuel Barr and Sibella Bell of Mifflin.

Although Joseph Augustus Atlee and Mary H. Harper had 2 children, neither child survived beyond 1900. Both Joseph Augustus and Mary can be found in the Tyrone Borough Censuses of 1910 and 1920. They married in 1889 and Joseph owned a shoe store for many years in Tyrone.

No, I'm sorry. It does not.
The geneology covers the descendents of William and Jane Alcock Atlee.
Their children were:
1. William Augustus b 1735 md 8/31/1763 Esther Sayre.
Many children but none named Patty or married before 1786.
2. Samuel John b 1739 md 4/19/1762 Sarah Richardson.
Many children but none named patty or married before 1789.
3. Joseph Edwin, unm
4. Amelia md Philip Cole
It sounds to me like your Patty does not descend from William and Jane.
There were other Atlees from FordHook House, Middlesex, England. Don't know about emigration of any of them.

I have a Walter Atlee Vandegrift (1898- 1991) who is the son of William Francis Vandegrift and Louisa Heston Kerbaugh. I was thinking that perhaps Walter's middle name was a maiden name in the family. I am looking for any connection to the following family names:
Vandegrift
Kerbaugh
Green
Hinchcliffe
Davis
Lovett
Joseph Augustus Atlee, b 9/7/1858 is on the last page of the Atlee geneology. I have filled in the marriage you mentioned.

My ancestry is mentioned on p 100. My gggrandmother Cornelia Ann Atlee was a cousin of Joseph's father. I have the complete geneology of that line if you're interested.

Do you have access to the 1884 book, Atlee, history of the Atlee family starting in England? If so, you have as much information as I do on this subject.

If not, I can look for you. You didn't give any dates. At least an approximate date would help a lot.

It does seem to me that the name Cox does appear in the book, although I have not been active in searching for quite a while and it could be elsewhere that I saw the name.

I am unsure of whom else in the family was since I am George's granddaughter and have only seen war pictures. We have a few of Roy and George in uniform.

What i would like to know. Is more about Arthur Partick Atlee George & Roy's Father. I know he drowned in Rideau Canal. But where is he buried. and When did he immigrate to canada?

If you know any info let me know. If Arthur came here in 1907 then I'm pretty sure i know why he came here and I will share this info.

~Kelsie Linfoot
(Sandra[4] , George[3], Arthur[2], Partick Atlee[1]).

The title of the book is "Genealogical Record of The Atlee Family", by Edwin Atlee Barber published by the Wm F Fell & Co in Philadelphia, 1884.
State College isn't all that far from Gettysburg. State College is square in the middle of the state. It's probably about a two-hour drive. (It would be a lot less if there were a direct route).
I don't know anything about Atlee Violins but I'm not surprised. There actually quite a few Atlee's out there and they're generally very entreprenuerial. One almost everyone knows is the founder of Burpee Seeds - "The W Atlee Burpee Seed Co". W stands for Washington and he is in this book.

thanks :) i go to gettysburg a lot...not sure where state college is, my maps are in the car..somewhere (if you have seen my trunk, you would know why i say that :D).

is this book hard to find? maybe one of the libraries has it and i can get it via inter library loan? can you maybe give me the title/author/publisher so i can dig around for it? :D

or maybe somehow else....

and in my travels on the web tonight....

was looking for a used violin and i found one at a web site, the instrument is called Atlee Violin, and it was made in Rutland Vermont, in 1904, and it was about $2,000 bucks.

I found it at: http://www.fiddlersattic.com/

Click the Violins button and scroll down to the 2,000-3,000 instruments..its the top one in there. There isn't a good photo tho..only shows the scroll...(argh!).

Does anyone know about that?

Wils
still a'diggin

I'd be glad to look through the book for you if I had anything to go on. It was published in 1884 so no name after that will be in it. It is over 100 pages, there is no index, and a good portion of the Atlee's were in Lancaster County, so I believe we'll need something more.
If you can get to State College, Pa, I'd gladly let you look through it.
Don Waltman

I have an Atlee history dated 1884. I read on the message boards that there are at least two such books. If another book is later than 1884, I would be interested in it.
I am descended from Cornelia Atlee who married my gg-grandfather William Waltman 1831-1899. I believe it's on page 99 or 100.
I have almost all of the descendent info from William and Cornelia on down if anyone is interested.
yes mary, nina, john we are all related and yes our granparent's did indeed come from england and ireland. we also have native american blood in our viens.where we come from is of little interest one should be more concerned with where u are goin. as for the family reunion there are 2 every year 1 held by the atlee's and 1 held by the simpson's who are related by marriage. since the passing over of roy I highly doubt that there will ever be a real family reunion in which to meet all of our clan but one never know's. Mary, if u really want some info than look in the u.s. as that's where our father Reg was takin us befor the accident happened and there is a story there. we have a second family there and a half brother that just happen's to be named Johnny. sound familiar. best of luck
Ronbert R Atlee Esq.
Brother13-2%-F.T.W
