I have a rather confusing bunch of Attwells that I'd like to share & get some help with...
Sarah Atwall (according to the marriage record) born c1791, Lambeth (according to the 1851 census) d 22 Aug 1856, Old Windsor BRK. She married Joseph Pope in 1815 in Old Windsor, but appears to have had a child by him(?) before the marriage, one George Attwell (b c1815) (who gave his father's name as Joseph Pope on his own marriage records) The couple had a further eight Pope children after the marriage.
George married Mary Ann Weller in 1845 in (New) Windsor BRK and had 4 children: George (b 1847), Thomas (b c1851), Mary Anne (b c1853) and Elizabeth (b 1855)
Thomas married Eliza Wilson in Eton in 1872 and had 7 children: Thomas William (b c1873), George Alfred (b 1875), Henry (b 1880), Robert (1882-1883), Robert Wilson (b 1884), Walter (b 1887) and James (b 1891).
Mary Anne (1853) married William Henry Manser in 1874 in Malling, Kent and had 5 children.
Elizabeth (1855) (my gt Grandmother) had (as far as I can tell) eight children: Elizabeth (b1876), Alice (b 1881), Ernest Robert (b 1884 - my Grandfather), Kate (b c1886), Ellen (b 1888), Edith (b 1890), Albert George (b 1892), Frederick William (b 1897)
Unfortunately, Elizabeth (1855) was in and out of the Windsor Union Workhouse for much of her adult life, three (possibly four) of the children were born in there (I've not found any record of Kate's birth as yet)
She was living with Robert Smith in the 1891 census in Egham and she had taken on his surname, as had all of the existing children. None of the birth certificates/baptism records give a father's name, but I have checked various other sources and Robert Smith was living in right place in all of the cases I have found so far. In 1881 & 1901 censuses, Elizabeth and her children (except Ernest Robert) are all recorded as Attwell.
Elizabeth (1877) appears to have had two children, Frederick William (or William Frederick) (b 1909) and Ernest (or Robert) (b 1905). Frederick was sent (from a boys' home) to Canada in September 1920 on the SS Metagama as part of the Macpherson Party, destination was Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario. He was to be placed with a Mark Morton.
Ernest Robert Attwell (1884) became Robert Ernest Smith & married my Grandmother, Daisy Ann Illsley in 1916
Kate Attwell (c1886) became Kate Smith & married William Reginald Caister Prangley in 1915
Ellen Attwell (1888) became Ellen Smith & married Frank Bissett in 1921
Albert George Attwell lived as Albert Smith with a wife called Alice in Egham SRY but I haven't been able to find the marriage yet.
If any of those match up with anyone here, please get in contact. I'd really like to find out more about Sarah Atwall/Attwell (c1791) so I can take the family back further.
Cheers, Neil
PS, my genealogy blog tells of the story of how I found this all out (and fills in some gaps too)
