Very Sad Story

My great grandfather was named John Aubrey and he was a cabninet maker in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The last I could find him on the City Directory was 1890, but believe that one other daughter was born in 1892 there. At some point he and his wife, Minnie (Mary Elizabeth Diggins) separated and she was forced to place her 5 children in protective custody in New York City. There names were Arthur, William (Buster), Edith, Blanche and we believe Eugene. My aunt searched almost her whole life for her grandfather and my grandmother always wondered what happened to him. Any information please contact me at karolv123@aol.com

Re: Aubrey's in South Wales

These many Aubreys are almost certainly not related to Sir John Aubrey and/or his children.

Here's why: Sir John Aubrey was Baronet of Llantrithyd. He is descended from Dr William Aubrey who was Regis Professor of Law at Oxford and Mary Queen of Scots' lawyer at her treason trial.

King James knighted William Aubrey's two elder sons in gratitude, but they squandered their wealth and were then packed-off to the America's with a land grant. From them comes a well documented descent in the Americas. The youngest son, Thomas Aubrey I believe was his name, became 1st Baronet. His descendants died out and the Baronetcy passed to Charles Digby-Aubrey (~1856), who also died without heirs and the Baronetcy passed to the Fletcher family. Since the Fletcher's were already Baronets and more senior, the Llantrithyd Baronetcy essentially vanishes.

So had anyone bearing the name "Aubrey" (therefore from their father's line) been directly related, then the Baronetcy would not have gone to the Digby's and then the Fletchers - the Committee for Parliamentary Privileges would have seen to it that one of the real Aubrey's was recognized. Ergo, none of us is related in the male line to Sir John's family, and not in the female line in any way more senior than the Digby's or Fletchers either.

You can buy a copy of the Sir John's family biography from http://www.heraldrytoday.co.uk

My family-name is Williams, but my grt-grt-grt-grt-grandfather, Lewis Williams, married Ellen Aubrey of Amlwch (Llanerchymedd). She was certainly of the Aubrey's buried in the Llanerchymedd churchyard, but they 'appear' out of nowhere about 1765. Since Lewis and Ellen's marriage, all descendants have borne "Aubrey" as a middle name, starting with Richard Aubrey Williams (b.~1803 d.25th Aug. 1880 and buried at Llanedwan, Anglesey, former church of the Plas Newydd estate of the Marquess' of Anglesey, who are also buried in the graves nearby) to my own generation today.

Hopefully that clears-up some details - but for sure if your family name is "Aubrey" there is probably some distant relationship to the St Alberico's (Reginald) who came with William of Normandy in 1066, via the Aubrey's Breconshire

Richard

Aubrey - Anglesey (Llanerchymedd, Amlwch)

After many years' searching, I have finally tied the recurring "Aubrey" middle name in my "Williams" family back to an Aubrey family. I am now trying to tie these Aubrey's to the wider Aubrey families, but there appears to be no Aubrey family indigenous to Anglesey prior to ~1770. There are some IGI entries that I know to be fictitious - I spent a week at the Llangefni record office chasing them down in the registers.

So I’m looking for two things:
The direct connection between Ellin and the other Aubreys in Llanerchymedd, and the connection between the isolated Aubreys of Llanerchymedd and the rest of the mainland - most of who are in Merionithshire, Radnorshire, and Breconshire.

If you read this and find anything that connects somewhere to Aubrey’s elsewhere on Anglesey or on the mainland, please do post-back.

This is my connection:
Lewis Williams, Tailor of Amlwch (Llanenellwyfo, aka Llanenellwyfdd, according to Amlwch marriage register) in north Anglesey. He married Ellin Aubrey on 12th Aug. 1788. See attachment.

Lewis & Ellin's children:
- Eldest (surviving) son was Richard Aubrey (Auobrey) Williams, bap. 1803 d.25th Aug. 1880. He married Ellinor Williams of Llanedwan. Richard and Ellinor's only son was Owen Hugh Williams, interred with his parents in the Llanedwan churchyard adjacent to the Plas Newydd estate of the Marquis of Anglesey. The 4th/5th Marquis' graves are two or three plots over.

- Daughter Ellen bap. 7th March 1807.

- My line is descended of Lewis & Ellin's youngest son, Owen Williams, born 20th Apr 1810 d.21st Jul 1868. Married first Elizabeth Pritchard 10th Oct 1834, who died in Liverpool 28th Feb. 1845 they had no surviving children. They had moved to Liverpool by ~1837 because he is listed a Burgess in 1841 and you had to have been a Freeman of the town for 3-years before becoming a Burgess. Owen is buried in Liverpool’s Anfield Cemetery with his 2nd wife Ellen (nee Woodward) and one of their daughters, Catherine.

Points to note:
The Amlwch marriage register says Lewis’ wife, Ellin Aubrey, was "of this parish" (Amlwch), but the only Aubreys recorded for Bap./Burial in the area are in the nearby parish of Llanerchymedd, where their graves are still found today.

The first record of an Aubrey I can find on Anglesey is in fact this marriage to Lewis Williams by Ellin Aubrey in 1788.

The next ‘record’ is inferred from the 1861 census, listing William Aubrey born in Llanerchymedd ~abt.1792. There is a William Aubrey buried in Llanerchymedd Jan. 16th 1867 aged 77yrs which might be him. However, there is no baptism record for him in the Llanerchymedd or neighboring parish registers.

There is also an entry in the Llanerchymedd burial register on 9th Feb. 1794 for Owen Aubrey.

Other Aubrey records:
Ref. WPE/34/15 : 17th Nov. 1807, Richard Aubrey marr. Catherine Thomas, both of Amlwch.

In 1810 William Aubrey is granted a license to keep an inn (ref. WQS/1810/M/63), and in 1818 he passes the license to David Burgess (ref. WQS/1818/201).

WPE/34/17 - Page 296 No.886.
19th May 1837, David Owen m. Anne Aubrey of Amlwch. Witness John Williams and David Aubrey.
I have a bunch of Aubrey headstones to transcribe, which I’ll post shortly.

--Richard
Re: Aubrey Family Genealogy Association

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your reply. Maybe I have been blessed in the lineages that I have been researching for the past 10 years. My family name and subsequent ancestors was probably the most difficult research I have come across with out finding something that hadn't already been researched.

From my understanding of the Aubrey name which was brought forward and cultivated from the 1100's through the next 900 years, I would have thought there would be a bigger abundance of research material than what I have found so far.

I am chasing the Aubrey's in Wales, primarily in the Glamorgan area. So far with the help of a couple very knowledgeable people, they have helped me to be able to go back 4 generations from about 1850. Maybe what I don't have yet is a solid understanding of the material available and where and how to find it. But then again, that is all part of learning process for specific areas of research.

Either way, Linda, my best wishes to you and your quest and through all searches for your family.

Brian Green

I note that it's many years since a message was put on the site and I can't get access to what was written - but very interested when I read Aubreys Warwickshire. That's where my family were from and although I knew my grandparents - nothing else - maybe I'll go enquiring when I get the time but it's not such a common name so i just wondered about any possible links. Thanks Denise Aubrey

Dear Glyn,
I have just read with interest that your great, great grandfather was a John Aubrey and was born in Porthkerrry.
My great great grandfather was a Lewis Aubrey, who was also born in Porthkerry, in or around 1805..He had three children..Frederick, David and I believe John?? His father was William Aubrey who was a farmer in Porthkerry..All Lewis's children were christened in Porthkerry church..My daughter took me to the church a few months ago, and I also saw the farm where William farmed in the 1700'S...I would be interested if you have any more information about the Aubreys of Porthkerry..best wishes Pat Caldwell

Morris Aubrey in 1865

Morris Aubrey, of the 72nd Ohio Infantry, is listed among the dead on the Sultana.

On April 27, 1865, the steamship Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River in what remains the greatest maritime disaster in American. Over 1600 passengers, mostly Union soldiers recently released from Confederate prison camps, were killed either in the explosion, from drowning, or fire.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a webpage called "Sultana Passenger List." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.riverrockentertainment.com/sultana_search.htm

My ancestor, James Aubrey (1843-1905)was born in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, South Wales, and I found him living in Ebbw Vale in the 1851 census with his older brother, Joseph, and his mother, Anne, who was born in Trevlyn between 1808 and 1813. I found his father, Richard, in the 1841 Wales census. He was born between 1803 and 1808, and had apparently died prior to the 1851 census. There was also an older sister, Martha, born about 1833 living in the household in the 1841 census.

James and Joseph emigrated to Youngstown, Ohio, USA, in 1864.

Our family oral history has the Aubreys originating as French Hueguenots, who escaped to England in the late 1600's. They then became labor agitators and escaped again to Wales.

Do any of these people tie in with any of your ancestors, or do any of you know anything about the French Hueguenot origins?

The Aubreys came to Britain with the Normans in 1066 and were given two manor houses near Brecon. They spread out from there. My Aubreys I have traced back from Cardiff to Llanbister in mid Wales near the border and they were stone masons called Richard and Thomas, born around 1800. regards, Jo Aubrey

My ggg grandfather John Aubrey was from Porthkerry nr Barry. His son and grandson (both Thomas) lived and worked on farms in Llanedeyrn and St Mellons, now suburbs of Cardiff. In the 1890s my grandfather moved to Porth Rhondda for the mines. He had 9 siblings who all lived in Porth. there's an Aubrey Road in Porth. There's an Aubrey Arms Pub at Bonvilston near St Mellons Cardiff. the high sheriff of Glamorgan in the 19th Century was Sir (something) Aubrey. There's a Sir John Aubrey buried at Llantrythid vale of Glamorgan, near Cowbridge I think. If you interested I can let you see my family tree.

Regards

Glyn Aubrey
