I am researching the Pittsburgh Bakewells of Allegheny County who are buried in section 2 at Allegheny Cemetery with the Clark family of Lucy Clark who was the sister of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

It is my understand that Lucy Bakewell married artist John James Audubon.

I am trying to sort out these Catholic families who lived and worked in and around Pittsburgh. They seem to be connected to Cardinal John McCloskey and his brother Bishop William McCloskey the Bishop of Louisville KY. Any ideas?

Hi- Read your distant post. My research was primarily focussed on my side--John Woodhouse, and I wrote a small book about it. But had a few notes about the V.G. side. Daniel Mallory is listed in the Brooklyn directory but I forgot the exact year. Many errors in these old books. However, V.G. son was in the Civil War for 2 brief periods and enlisted from NJ I think. I have seen a copy of the record. My interest is in a mysterious Margaret Baldwin, born somewhere upstate NY, and with Benjamin Audubon, had a son---my grandfather in 1876. Happy hunting! Walter Audubon

Hi Claire

So nice to hear from you.

I would love to correspond with you via regular email, if you wish. Have lots to write about but some not for this forum. I am acquainted with many Audubon/Bakewell descendants and some of us have just established what is going to be a lively Yahoo! Group and I want to tell you about it and about who these folks are. We are especially interested in the Hall connection! Please email me at lilarose1941@yahoo.com.

Mallory

You and I have corresponded on email. Also, I contacted the John James Audubon Museum in Henderson, Kentucky regarding your inquiry about some of the particulars about Georgiana Mallory. They don't know much about her. You can contact the Museum directly--do a "Google" for John James Audubon Museum, Henderson, KY.

No. I don't live in Hati, and my interest isn't really the Audubons. I am researching the Mallory family and Georgianna and her sisters are another loose thread. At least one person suggested their father was Daniel Mallory; and a posting under the Tallmans (I believe from a published work) says Delia Mallory's father was Daniel. This posting didn't mention the Audubons, but I soon found it was the same Tallman living with Victor and he was now widowed.

I live in Oregon.

By the way, quite a few people from the Redding Ct area went to Hati and the west indies. Stephen Russell Mallory, commander of the Confederate navy, was born in Hati or Cuba. His father was a civil engineer from Redding. I have read accounts of others from that area in some commercial venture or serving in a military unit from that area of Connecticut.
I did find another sister for her...Delia who married Edward W Tallman. Edward Tallman is widowed and living with Victor Audubon and Victor's sister in law Eliza Mallory in 1880. Victor is listed as a widower, though I have a date of 1882 for Georgiana's death. That must be incorrect.

Delia Talman Audubon is apparently named for Georgiana's sister and her husband.

Victor J.
I am interested in Victor Audubon and more particularly his wife. The 1880 census shows Victor to still be alive...though it's probably a mistranscription of Mrs. Victor Aubudon., Georgiana Mallory.

Georgianna's sister, Elizabeth Mallory, is living with them, and also the widower of another sister, Delia, George W Talman. (tallman)

You will note, one of Victor's daughter was Delia Talman Audubon.

I believe the Mallory girls are duaghters of Daniel Mallory and Eilzabeth Ames or Eames....but I don't have proof yet, and I don't know Daniel's parentage..but they were from Mass.

Daniel Mallory =
Delia Mallory d 9 Jul 1889 = 11 Jul 1841 Edward W Talman (Wellington Mallory)

Daniel Mallory Ct = Eliza Ames/Eames
Eliza Mallory 18 Jan 1825 WA DC living with the Audubons in NY 1880 d 3 Feb 1879 (on 1880 census) Parents MA
Georgianna Richards Mallery 16 Oct 1815 d 13 Nov 1882 152nd St, NYC (census show him a widower in 1880 but could be son) = 1843 Victor Gillford Audubon 12 Jun 1809 Louisville KY d 18 Aug 1860 bur Trinity Church Cem NY (John James Audubon, THE NATURALIST =1808 Lucy Bakewell)

1880 census:
Victor J.
Audubon, John James Family

Here is a new message board for the surname AUDUBON. I am hoping to find Audubons who are descended from the French family branch of Audubons. John James (Jean Jacques) Audubon was born in what is now Haiti but was taken by his father, sea captain Jean Audubon, along with a half sister Rosa, from Haiti to France. The two children were raised by the captain's legal French wife, who was not their biological mothers (each child had a different mother). Capt. Jean Audubon supposedly came from a huge family in France; yet, I have never been able to locate any French descendants. I am the 4th gr granddaughter of John James Audubon and his English wife Lucy Green Bakewell. Their second-born son, John Woodhouse Audubon, is my 3 gr-grandfather, and his wife was Maria Rebecca Bachman from Charleston, SC. There are descendants of Victor Audubon, the eldest of John James and Lucy Audubon, who live on the east coast of the United States. John James Audubon came to America in his late teens and lived at his father's Mill Grove estate in what is now Audubon, PA. It was at Mill Grove that he met his future wife Lucy who lived at Fatland Ford, across the road from Mill Grove. They traveled to Kentucky to begin life together, lost their first two children young (both girls), and at this time in his life the seeds were planted that would lead to the creation of "The Birds of America," a collection of watercolor paintings by Audubon. The originals can be seen at the New York Historical Society.

My family has a theory that M.A fougere who was the mother of Jean Jaques Audubon was related by marraige to Estelle Morepeau, who's Husband was a Adolphe Bonnefil my great great Grandfather.
We think the name bonnefilis that "Bonnefil" (since it doesn't
seem to exist in France) is a "bastardization" of "son of Audubon?"
Bon--fils (or Bon -fille for daughter).

I have done some research on the Internet and found that the name Bonnefil is common in France and goes as far back as 1700.
I found a Baptismal record of Estelle Bonnefil etc.

There is even a Winery called Domaine de Bonnefil.I don't know if there is a direct connection or not. I am trying to find out.
Audubon Link

I certainly don't discount any relationships claimed by anyone to the Audubon family. The reason is that there is still much that is not known about John James Audubon's origins (he didn't help matters during his lifetime by making up stories, probably due to his feelings about his illegitimacy). The family knows very little about the Haitian connection. We would certainly like to know more. It is a mystery why there are apparently no Audubons in France, although I have found references to a Michel Audubon in Canada and there was another Audubon who came as a ship worker to America. Capt. Jean Audubon, JJA's father, is supposed to have had a brother Claude and a sister also. I have been in touch with Fritz G. Telemaque of the Rabin/Fougere surname site on Rootsweb, and I have a list of questions for him.

Do you live in Haiti? Do you know if there are any records there indicating the lives of any of Marie-Antoinette Rabin Fougere's family and/or of Catherine Bouffard, aka "Sanitte"?
I would like to learn more about Bouffard's children.

It is always nice to learn more about this mysterious family. Any researched information you can provide is welcome.
