Just thought you were taking a 3 gen. leap! Leonard joined the Dutch Protestant Church as Jonar Larroy, Petrus was baptisted under the Larua name, it was his son Jonas that used Laraway (maybe he just wanted to sound more dutch).

Vital Audie was born in St. Ferdinand March 10,1875 and came to the U.S. April 12,1909. His father was Vital Audy born Dec 12, 1846, the son of Thomas Audy and Olive Vachon. Line carries back to Simeons son Jean born Sept 4, 1670.

I had already tried that Phonetically close line on my father ... his responce was "only if your speaking mill french" I will stay with dit, or the man might get out of his wheelchair and strangle me with his one good arm!

Talk to me!
Do know that the original spelling is Haut d'y , which means high dike. My grandfather told me that the family property in Normandy was at the upper end of a dike that held back the spring flood waters.

Happy New Year!

Regarding Leonard Remi (aka Jonas), you have it slightly wrong...

Leonard Remi who was Simeon's son was born on sept 15th 1674 in Charlesbourg, near Quebec city. He was about 6 years old when Simeon moved to Kingston, NY from Montreal, Qc.
Leonard Remi married Mary Oeycke (Uzille) on sept 28th 1703 in Kingston, NY. He died in 1750 in Schoharie, NY.

His eldest son, Petrus was born on sept 1704 in Kingston, NY. Petrus married Maria van Alstyne or Alsteyn in Schoharie on oct 16th 1730. They had seven children, one of these being Jonas born in 1730 in Schoharie (Maria was probably pregnant at her marriage!) and he died in Ontario in 1801. His wife was Elizabeth Betsy Muller. This is probably the Jonas you were referring to.

As for the origin of our name, I am sure that the explanation that I gave you is the right one. Phonetically speaking in French, ''de'' and ''dit'' are close...

When did your G Grandfather Vital move to Maine? Any info on Vital's parents, brothers, sisters, etc... ?

I live in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Merry Christmas to you. You have most of it right ... one slight problem Simeon died in 1713, Jonas was not born until 1731 in Schoharie, NY. If he was Simeon's son , he would be a little old to fight with Butler's Rangers during the American Revolution.
The dit vs de thing we could discuss forever. what I do know is my line used dit.The last one to still use it was my G.G.G.Grandfather , Thomas LeRoy dit Audy. His son Vital only used Audy. The next generation split, the first 2 sons used Audie (My G Grandfather Vital Audie) the last 3 children used Audet. Vital moved from Quebec to Maine. His younger brother moved to Ohio - you'll find Audie's there too!
Were is it that you live? Would be interesting to figure out were our lines cross.

Full name was 'Simeon LeRoy de Haut Dye' from Creances in Basse Normandie and not 'Simeon LeRoy dit Haut d'Y'. There is confusion on the french signification of 'de' and 'dit': these two words do not mean de same thing. 'De' means from and dit 'aka'.

As for the part of the family that is named Laraway, it finds its origin in a mistake in writing the name of Leonard Remi LeRoy, one of the sons of Simeon and his wife Claude Blandine. Leonard Remi was married in a dutch protestant chuch in Kingston, New York. In the official document he is named ‘Jonar Larua’ which was changed to 'Laraway'. Phonetically speaking the french pronunciation of 'Leonard LeRoy' is closed to 'Jonar Larua'. That is the origin of the name 'Laraway' in the States… and in Ontario. Many of Leonard’s descendants were Loyalists who went to Canada after the US Independance war. So there is a branch of 'Laraway' in Ontario.

The other sons of Simeon and Claude Blandine kept the name of LeRoy. Almost all of the Audy in Quebec are direct descendants of Jean Roy-Audy, the eldest son of Simeon who stayed in Quebec with Jean Giron and Madeleine Deschalets (Claude Blandine’s sister and thus Jean’s aunt). The rest of trhe family moved to Montreal for a few years and then to Kingston, New York where they integrated themselves into the already flourishing dutch calvinist (protestant) society in the Hudson valley. Two other children were born in the US : Frans (aka Captain Frans) and Sara.

My great grand father was the first of my descendants to change his name from Roy-Audy to Audy.

Tell me, Peter, what are the origins of the Audy (or Audie) from Maine?
Would be interested in anything you have on the family. I am in Maine, the name shifted from Audy to Audie with my great grandfather Vital.

Peter, you seem to know much about the Simeon Roy dit Audy family. Do you have anything you can share? I am currently working on a website/portal for family members only and would like to compare notes if at all possible. You might want to pay us a visit. http://fratezone.com/nuke/family

Thanks
