Robert "Bob" Auer

HELENA - Robert "Bob" Auer, devoted father and husband, was born in Billings on May 7, 1954, to David and Peggy Jean Auer. He died Jan. 12, 2004, from complications of a short, but courageous fight with lung cancer. He was 49 years old.
Bob was born and raised in Billings. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart, Jayme Reighard, on Aug. 10, 1979. They would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year.
Bob went to Rocky Mountain College in Billings for two years after high school. After that, he worked for many years as a painter in the construction industry in Billings. He later went back to college, earning a degree in information systems from Eastern Montana College in 1988. He worked for Molerway Freight for two years as a programmer before getting a job with the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation in Helena in 1990. He worked his way up to IT manager at DNRC, where he was employed until the time of his death.
Bob was blessed with three wonderful children, Jim, Mark and Nicole. The most important thing to Bob was his family; that was his first concern. Bob coached Little League baseball and softball for 17 years, touching the lives of hundreds of kids. He was an avid fan of all his children's activities, especially wrestling. Bob enjoyed all outdoor activities with his family, hiking, fishing, hunting and golfing. He also liked riding his "hog." Bob enjoyed photography, playing guitar, listening to music and carpentry. He was always learning something new.
Though a man with no definite religion, he had an immeasurable depth of faith in a higher power. He believed that power helped him through the dark days of his life. He had strong personal beliefs that he practiced in his everyday life. He touched the lives of many people and will be missed beyond words.
Bob's step father, Buck Young, preceded him in death. In addition to his wife and children, Bob is also survived by his mother, Jean Young of Helena; father and stepmother, David and Louise Auer of Billings; brother, Geary Auer and his wife Ann Marie of San Jose, Calif.; brother Eric and his wife Yanti of Aspen, Colo.; step-sisters, Shanna and Gretchen, and step-brothers, Byron and Kurt.
Cremation has taken place. Services will be held Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Helena Funeral Chapel in Helena. Bob's ashes will be spread in the Elkhorn Mountains at a later date. Donations can be made to the Auer Children Education Fund, Montana City Bank, in Montana City.
