My Aufderheides were in New Jersey. I have been researching them for years and now believe that Charles Frederick Aufderheide was from the Bielefeld area of Westfalen. He was born about 1840, parents and siblings not known, and arrived in the US prior to 1870. He lived in Manhatten until 1888 and died in Hudson Co., NJ in 1899. He married Caroline Phillipia Luise (Louise)Zangeberg Dieckhaus whose first husband was Wilhelm Dieckhaus. Charles Frederick (also called Carl) was a watchmaker.
