Jean Auman Vercoe - b. Lancaster, Pa.

HEATH: Jean Auman Vercoe, aged 86, of Heath, Ohio (Licking County) passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Newark Healthcare Centre, Newark, Ohio.

She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the late James and Helen Auman.

Aside from her family, her great joy in life was music. She was an accomplished soprano and soloed in both high school glee clubs and church choirs.
Later, as a young adult in Philadelphia, she became a member of the "Singing City Chorale", a large, professional chorus which performed regularly with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Singing City was a family of great diversity. It welcomed all ages, all races, all religions, all cultures. And it molded all this diversity into truly magnificent harmony.

In 1974, Jean and her family moved to Ohio, where she served in several music and civic organizations over the years. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newark, Ohio and a member of P.E.O., an international philanthropic organization which provides higher-education scholarships to worthy women. Additionally, Jean was an exceptional cook and a meticulous needle-work artist.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Vester V. Vercoe, and by their three children and four grandchildren: Kimberly Vercoe and Sam Porter and their daughter Kira of Southborough, MA; Scott and Laurie Vercoe and their sons Bryan and Travis of Malvern, PA; and Darin Vercoe and her son Elijah of Port Townsend, WA; sisters Eleanor Allen of Homosassa, FL and Bettyann Wenbert of Arlington, VA; and brother James (Pearl) Auman of Marion Indiana.

Jean was preceded in death by an older brother, Rictor Auman.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 42 East Church Street, Newark, OH with the Reverend Charlie Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to your favorite choir or orchestra.

Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
Please visit www.hendersonvanatta.com if you wish to leave a message of condolence for the Vercoe Family.

I remember meeting your grandfather John and his wife Frances. I remember he had three children, John Tommy, Richard and Irene. My name was Donna. I would be glad to tell you everything I know about the family.

I have a memory card for Abraham Auman, born 11/5/1863, died 11/21/1905. He was 42 yrs. 16 days when he passed. I am a gr-gr-gr-granddaughter of Peter Auman, Abraham's father. I have been working on my dad's side of the family for years and just recently broke through the barrier when I came across the memory card for Abraham. My grandfather is Walter E. Auman, great grandfather is Johnathan H. Auman, brother of Abraham, then of course gr-gr-grandfather is Peter Auman, then gr-gr-gr-grandfather is George Auman. I really want to go back as far as I can so any help prior to George Auman will be greatly appreciated. I have current data on Walter E. Auman's family, up through his great grandson's.

Wood. I have got the names John Auman and Orval Dewayne Auman from different family members as possible fathers. Given my fathers birthdate his father was likely in the service and just coming home from the war. I really would like to find his father's name as it is my family name.
My Grandfather's name was John Wanamaker Auman. He was the son of Ann(e) stoffer Or stouffler or something like that. His father I believe was a post master in Johnstown, PA. His parents were divorced... crazy huh back then. He had two sister Lucy and Grace. I have no idea what their married names were. When my grandfather's parents divorced Lucy went to live with the Auman's Grace and John (my grandfather) stayed with their Mother's family. Just curious do you have any idea what the Auman's nationality , religious background is? Assuming German but not sure.

Thank you for responding to my messages. I am a second cousin then! My grandfather Bert was your grandmother Natalie's brother. Natalie died in the early 1960's and is buried in Calumet City I believe. I have been searching for years for relatives and have finally put just a few pieces together. My uncle Bert (Bert Sr.'s son) and his brother, my uncle Marvin are still living and doing well. Would love to chat if you would like. Our great grandmother Alma was a character! Again, thanks for responding!
Fietta Auman Centre County Pa

Does anyone have any more information or photos of Fietta or her family...In 1890 Fietta murdered my ggg grandfather Andrew Weaver...the following is the first of many newsclippings following the murder the trial and the sentencing of Fietta (Auman) Weaver...
Thanks Jay
The Murder of Granddad Andrew Weaver Sr.

This article appeared in the Democratic Watchman dated Jan 31, 1890 Centre County, Pennsylvania.

One mile south of where Stover’s distillery used to stand in Penn Township, in a desolated, uninviting and unfrequented hollow, between two mountains are a couple of miserable huts. Until Tuesday last, Mrs. Susan Auman her son “Yeny” or Jonathan and Andrew Weaver Sr., were the occupants of one and, Mrs. Aumans daughter, Fietta, and her husband Andrew Weaver Jr. with their two children, of the other. This Tuesday evening, Andrew Weaver Sr. is with the great majority, having been sent their through the aid of a knife, and Fietta Weaver, his daughter in law, her mother Mrs. Auman, and her brother Yeny are occupying cells in the jail; the former of these three charged with the crime, the latter held as accessories too, or witnesses of its commission.
It is possible that the actual circumstances connected with this case will never be known. All that anyone knows outside of the knowledge possessed by the three accused individuals, is that old man Weaver was found dead at the door of his daughter-in-law’s, shanty from a knife thrust under the left arm and reaching the heart. Outside of those under arrest there was no witnesses o the crime, and those who are acquainted with them only know that whole lot were constantly quarrelling and threatening all manner of vengeances against each other.

The particulars as told by the three now in jail is substantially as follows:

Andrew Weaver Jr. left home early on Tuesday morning to do some work, a considerable distance from where he lived. Old man Weaver and young Auman arranged to go up to the Valley a short distance, and about nine o’clock started on the trip. They had gone but a little way when Mrs. Fietta Weaver who was near her door called out something that offended the old man and he immediately retraced his steps, throwing stones at her as he went and swearing that they would fight it out now and that one or the other must die” Fietta they alleged went into the shanty and shut and tried to bolt the door, but Weaver reaching it before it was fastened, pushed it open and taking her by the throat began to choke and beat her. She cried for help but before either her brother or her mother reached her, Weaver fell dead out of the door stabbed to the heart. She asserts that while he had her by the throat he tried to cut her with his knife and fell upon it as he stumbled out of the door. The fact that his knife was a small one and was found between his vest and shirt with the smallest of the blades open, while the cut that caused death was a larger one and passed through all the clothing shows the absurdity of this part of her story.

Word was immediately sent to Coburn Pennsylvania and a jury was compiled which after a short examination returned their verdict that Andrew Weaver Sr. came to his death through a knife wound inflicted by Mrs. Fietta Weaver.
Whether the mother and brother will be held as accomplices in the offence depends on further development.
We need to see if they match the others from Centre Co., PA.
Peter was still living and in Cherokee Co., KS, at least as late as the 1880s, based on a biographical sketch in William G. Cutler's (1883) "History of the State of Kansas..."

Peter married three times:

First to Leah OBERHOLTZER (1830-1851) on 14 Oct 1849, Holmes Co., OH; no issue.

Second to Sarah BOLLMAN (c1831-1865) on 6 Mar 1853, Tuscarawas Co., OH; three children (Jonathan, Martha, Abraham).

Third to Rebecca LIVINGSTON (c1836- ) on 27 Oct 1865, Owen Co., IN; no issue.

Peter was in the 1850 census of Sugar Creek Twp., Tuscarawas Co., OH (p. 214B), the 1860 census of Marion Twp., Owen Co., IN (p. 211), and again in 1870 (p. 292A). I can't find him in the 1880 census, but that is the year he is said to have moved to Cherokee Co., KS, so perhaps he was in transit and missed being enumerated. By the 1900 census, only his son, Abraham AUMAN (b. Nov 1863, IN), and his family are still living in Cherokee Co., KS (p. 259B).

For futher details, please see family group sheet:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/A/AumanPeter-LeahOberholtzer...

My burning question is: who are the parents of the Lydia AUMAN (b. 1855, IN) living with Peter & Sarah in the 1850 census? Is she their niece? Lydia married Henry Wesley STRAUB / STROUP, son of John C. STROUP & Lydia WEAVER.
