John Greene AUSTIN, THE AUSTIN FAMILY OF S.E. ALABAMA: 1996; P. 1 "One of the early settlers of South East Alabama with John AUSTIN of North Carolina. "SYLVAN GROVE SETTLEMENT" (Walding Cross Roads was nearby) - John AUSTIN and his son, John Arter AUSTIN came with John Walding about 1818."

In 1803, John AUSTIN, Thomas Crittendon, Jeremiah Day and families, were granted a Passport by the Cherokee Indian Nation to "...decend the river and other waters..." John had married Sarah YOUNGBLOOD in Johnston County, NC in 1803. The YOUNGBLOOD and AUSTIN families are mentioned many times in the Johnston Co., NC records prior to 1800. John and Sarah settled in Baldwin County, Georgia, for a times as two children were born ther, Mary G. in 1812 and John Arter in 1815. He is shown on the 1810 tax list in Captain Sanders District. In 1819, he was registered in the Milledgeville District Land Lottery, but was not lucky.

Apparently, John AUSTIN migrated from NC to GA between 1803 and 1810, moving by way of Fort Gaines, GA, through Abbeville, AL to Sylvan GROVE in what is now Dale Co., AL in 1818. He folowed the Federal Road bringing his belonging on a two wheel ox cart. The Census shows John AUSTIN in Dale County in 1830 and in Barbour County in 1840.
