Do any of you Austin researchers know about a Nancy Austin who married Francis Woods in Madison County KY on Dec. 11, 1815? I am researching my Wood line in Madison County; this Francis Woods might be the son of Francis Wood (my ancestor) who died before 1836 in Madison County. Did this couple stay in Madison County KY, or go elsewhere? Thanks.

Austin/Austen - England-Kent/Islington/Willenhall

I have come to a bit of a brick wall, so any possible help would be appreciated. My great grandfather was Edward James Austin, Padlock Maker of Willenhall, Stafford. He married Mary Ann ?. Edward unfortunately dropped dead in the middle of bible class at the age of 37 in St Thomas's Church, Wednesfield. His parents, I believe, were George Austen (here is where the surname changes!) b est.1824 in Bourn, Kent, England (if anyone has any idea where Bourn is in Kent I would also be grateful). He was a coal dealer. He died on 9 April 1893 in Willenhall. His father was Edward Austen. George was married to Mary Ann Compton b. est.1832 in Banbury, Oxfordshire. They were married on 30 Jun 1850 in All Saints Church, Islington. Mary was a dressmaker. Because of their moving around and the commoness of their names, I am at a bit of a loss at the moment so would love to hear from anyone who has any possible connection.

I am also wondering if Nathaniel's brother John was a crew member who died during the voyage. Thanks for your help!

I found these papers at a yard sale for cheap. They were in a pile of old papers. I thought they were pretty neat. By doing a quick look on the research, the guy is Lloyd A. Austin from Tampa, FL, he was born in Nebraska. His wife is Mary I Austin was born in Oklahoma. His parents were from Nebraska and Wisconsin. Her folks were born in MA and Maine. I looked up the requirements to get these forms. Seems like a hard class to take. The papers are beautiful. If they are your family let me know and we can discuss the shipping costs. I just didn't want to see these get thrown out!

John Austin b. ca 1814 SC, d. 1880-1900

The October 2006 version of the AFAOA "Nathaniel Austin Sr. of Greenville County, South Carolina" database, on pg. 29, has a brief listing for the above man. I have some questions about it, and I'm hoping to open a discussion and/or get some answers.

1. It says that his parents were John J. Austin & Lucretia Harris and that his middle name was Benjamin. What is the reasoning behind these assertions?

2. It says his first wife was Nancy ___ , that she died about 1839, and that they had no known children. What is the source for these assertions?

3. It says his second wife was Margaret ___ and they had 2 children: Charles & Thomas.

If Nancy did indeed die about 1839, then they must have had 3 children:
A. George W. Austin, Esq. b. ca 1835 m. Sarah E. Wells. He was a lawyer in Carrollton, Carroll Co. GA. His son William's obituary said he was a judge, but I've found no evidence of this yet. In 1894 his stationery letterhead said "Clerk and County Attorney". Evidently he died by 1900.

B. James M. Austin b. ca 1836 d. in Coweta Co. GA by 1867. "John B. Austin having in proper form applied to me for permanent letters of administration on the estate of James M. Austin, deceased, late of Coweta County. B.H. Mitchell, Ordinary." Source: November 9, 1867 issue of "Newnan Herald" (Newnan, Coweta Co. GA). Not sure if he

C. Nancy Elizabeth Austin b. 1839 m 1. Robert L. Boyd m. 2. George Harrison Hopkins (his second wife). She was living with son Dr. Elam Austin Hopkins in Wolfe City, Hunt Co. TX in 1910.

His second wife was Mary M. ____. At first I thought perhaps her name was Mary Margaret ___ and that she was the same woman who was his wife in 1870. But Mary was about the same age as John and b. in SC and while her listed birthplace differs on the various censuses, Margaret was listed consistently as over 10 yrs. younger than John.

So, I think that Margaret was his third wife and that Charles and Thomas really were her sons and she may have been a widow with a son named Benjamin b. ca 1857 in GA who was living with them in 1870 and mistakenly listed as an Austin (John's daughter Nancy Elizabeth Boyd her Boyd daughters were also living there and lmistakenly listed as Austins).

The 1840 census for 408th District, Gwinnett Co. GA shows the following:
Pg. 84 Line 10 John B. Austin 20002-10001.

The 1850 census for 11th Division, Carroll Co. GA shows the following:
Pg. 36A dwelling 472 family 472 -
J. B. Austin 36 SC Blacksmith $800
Mary 34 SC
Geo 15 GA
Jas 14 GA
Elizabeth 10 GA
Ann 8 GA
Isabel 6 GA
unnamed (female) [Frances] 6 mos. GA

The 1860 census for Heard Co. GA (St. Cloud P. O.) shows the following:
Pg. 662 dwelling 7 family 7 -
John B. Austin 46 SC Blacksmith $300
Mary M. 45 SC
James M. 22 GA Apprentice Blacksmith
Ann 18 GA
Ellen 13 GA
Isabella 11 GA
Frances 10 GA
Zeida 8 GA

The 1870 census for Gwinnett Co. GA (Lawrenceville P. O.) shows the following:
Pg. 208 (104B) dwelling 1512 family 1520. His household consisted of:
John B. Austin 56 GA Farm Laborer $0 $250
Margaret 41 GA
Elizabeth [Boyd] 31 GA [dau]
Frances 20 GA
Ida 18 GA
Mary [Boyd] 12 GA [gr-dau]
Georgia [Boyd] 10 GA [gr-dau]
Sallie [Boyd] 8 GA [gr-dau]
Charlie 3 GA
Edgar 8 mos. GA b. Oct
Benjamin 13 [what surname?] GA [step-son?]

The 1880 census for 842nd District, Milton (now Fulton) Co. GA shows the following:
Pg. 11 (468C) dwelling 102 family 102 -
John B. Austin 64 Farmer SC SC SC
Margaret 50 wife NC VA VA
Charles N. 12 son Assists on farm GA SC NC
Thomas N. 10 son Assists on farm GA SC NC

The 1900 census for Justice Precinct 4, Fannin Co. TX shows the following:
Pg. 12A dwelling 202 family 202 -
Charles N. Austin 33 b. Jan 1867; marr 9 yrs. Farmer GA NC SC
Dora 26 wife b. Feb 1874; 3 ch, 1 liv GA GA GA
Tom 5 son b. Jan 1895 GA GA GA
Margarette 76 mother b. Jan 1894, widow; 2 ch, 2 liv NC GA GA

I don't know when or where Margaret died, but son Charles was back in GA by 1910, listed on the census that year in Rockbridge District, Gwinnett Co. and she wasn't with him. Charles moved to Etowah Co. AL by 1920 and died there in October 1933. Incidentally, his middle initial on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records was A not N. So, I'm not sure what his actual name was.

Additional tidbits about John B. Austin:

John B. Austen was a member of a militia company formed by Charles Lattimer in 1836. Source: The History of DeKalb County, Georgia 1822-1900 by Vivian Price, pg. 211

1853 tax list for Carroll Co. GA shows:
J. B. Austin Militia District 642 (Villa Rica), Land District 2

I welcome any and all input.

Vickie Elam White
VEWhite@nycap.rr.com

Relatives of Samuel, Thomas & John Honey Austin

I am keen to discover the bona fides of Samuel Austin and his wife Edith of Cornwall, England. Samuel and Edith are the grandparents of John Honey Austin who started the Austin line in Queensland, Australia when he emigrated in 1858 from Cornwall. He was born in Buckland Monachorum, Devon to Thomas Austin and Ann Honey. Thomas was born in Menheniott, Cornwall in about 1802. He claims his parents were Samuel and Edith (NFD) but neither my reseacrh nor other family trees which I have seen on this site can provide any further detail. I have not been able to confirm personally that Samuel and Edith are Thomas' parents but others apparently have and I would be very keen to hear from those who can shed light on this mystery.

Shane Austin

Ellen and Mary Austin of Omaha, Nebraska in 1876

Ellen Austin and Mary Austin of Omaha, Nebraska are listed among the dead in a train accident.

The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Train No. 5, The Pacific Express left a snowy Erie, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. As The Pacific Express plowed through the snow and crossed a bridge over the Ashtabula River, about 100 yards from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, the passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. In just seconds, the bridge fractured and the train plunged 70 feet into a watery abyss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Ashtabula Bridge Disaster." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://home.alltel.net/arhf/bridge.htm
Grubbs and Austin or Austen Photos

I have many photographs from my great-grandfather’s photo album. They appear to be from the 1860s. Some of the photographs do not have identifying names. If any kin and/or kith that might have old Grubbs and Austin photos that have been identified (or not), dating from the mid 1800s or even later, could assist in identification, please email me.

My great-grandfather, John Cloud Grubbs, lived in Pennsylvania and Oregon, and went to medical school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I also have c1868 photos taken there of his classmates, some named, some not. Some photos that I think may be of Grubbs or Austin kin were taken in Allegheny, Butler, Lancaster, Pittsburg(h), Pennsylvania, La Porte, Indiana, Chicago and Macomb, Illinois, San Francisco, California, or in Oregon.

John Cloud Grubbs was born in Pennsylvania in 1836 and died in Oregon in 1878. His father, John C. Grubbs, was born in Pennsylvania in 1801 and died in Oregon in 1886. His mother, Susan/Susanna Austin/Austen Grubbs, was born in England in 1814 and died in Oregon in 1899. The Grubbs family moved from Pennsylvania to Michigan about 1847 (where Susan’s parents lived) to Oregon in 1852. John Cloud Grubbs married Madelia Neally (Neely, Niley, or other variations) in 1871 in Oregon. After John Cloud died, Madelia married Michael St. Germain in 1882.

I do not have a picture identified as Susan Austin Grubbs, and would appreciate having a copy. I do have a couple of John C. Grubbs, as well as John Cloud. I have many of John Cloud and Madelia Neally Grubbs’ descendants and a few of Madelia’s ancestors and St. Gemain descendants. I would be happy to share copies with relatives if you will let me know to which line you belong.

If we can identify the photographs that are now nameless, then that’s more I can share!
I am presently researching two Austin brothers who married two McCaughey sisters. Isaac Austin was born around 1865 and married Nancy Jackson McCaughey and his brother Joseph married Sarah Jane McCaughey, and I don't have a birth year for him. I think that they would have been in Ohio at the time of their marriages but have no other information on them. I would appreciate any information that any one might be able to give me. I am also interested in a Nettie L. Austin who married a John James McCaughey. They had at least one son, Lester Jay McCaughey. Thank you in advance. Marlene McCaughey

Tioga Cty PA-- Owen Bingley Dyke (Dike)Sr. shown with son Owen Dyke Jr early 1900 census. Long story but to make it short Owen was married to Clara Wands and either divorce or whatever separated them. They obviously had child. Owen later married again and had 3 childrfen. My father who died in WWll was youngest. Owen never told family of first wife or a child. I discovered this doing geneology. I have traced him to living with Clinton Wood and Orissa am assuming?? that Clinton was kin to Rosetta Wood wife of Joel Austin brother of my gr grandmother Martha Austin Dyke Marble. I show Owen Jr with them as grand child then again in 1910 I show his name in census as Owen D. Brown son of Laura Wood Brown. The ages match with Owen Dyke Jr. Anyone who can give me any information on this please contact me at nanny111138@aol.com

I've hit a rock wall, I can't seem to find anything on the family.
I'm having trouble finding out if Nicholas Austin remarried after his wife Maud died 4-30-1920, giving birth to their would of been second child.
I only have that
Nicholas Austin
BOD: 11-26-1894 - 2-26-1950

Parents:
Father Sydney Austin
Mother Eliza (Brown)

Wife Maud Alcorn (Allcorn)
BOD: 8-16-1894 - 4-30-1920

They had only one living child.
Lucille Selma (Austin) Edmonds
BOD: 3-9-1918 - 2-7-1980

It as to believe that Maud had died after giving birth to Lucy. I have a copy of the death certificate which shows that Maud died giving birth to the second child.
I do know that Maud is buried at the Burnside Cemetery, not sure if there is a tombstone. She died in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Place of death was on 415 Detla Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio, Hamitlon County.
Maud was 25 yrs 8 month 24 days old
she as a housewife
Place of birth: Somerset Ky
Parents:
Father: William Alcorn
BOD: 1860 - 2-15-1968
Mother: Martha (Meece)
BOD 1857
which Willim and Martha married
June 14, 1883

Martha was Williams second wife
His first wife:
Sarah M. I was also told that Nicholas allowed some one to raise her, because he was angry at her because her mothers death. That just seems to hard to believe, but my father had told me. Lucy is my grandmother, my father's mother.
Nicholas had a sister named:
Jennice or maybe something like that:
On the death certificate is has this name also as of person given the information.
I had thought maybe it was her but then my father told me that he remember hearing the name Flo?
I hope some can help, I have some pictures if anyone would like share.
JOHN & ROSE AUSTIN=AUSTIN,CURTIS,PUTNAM,PHILLIPS & YOUNG FAMILIES

TO ALL AUSTIN FAMILIES;
(From the NEW YORK & NEW JERSEY area)
I am not a member of any AUSTIN family, "HOWEVER", I have in my possession a small family BIBLE that originally belonged to ROSE CURTIS-AUSTIN (b:06/24/1859) who was married to “JOHN S. AUSTIN” (b:09/26/1852). They were married 01/26/1879 and had three (3) Daughters. Their names were;
GENEVIEVE LILLIAN AUSTIN-(YOUNG), BERTHA MILDRED AUSTIN-(PUTNAM) AND HARRIETT CURTIS AUSTIN-(PHILLIPS). This BIBLE, although written at a later date, probably by ROSE CURTIS-AUSTIN has important family information in its family history area. I was able to trace JOHN S. and ROSE AUSTIN and their Daughter BERTHA A. (and Husband RAYMOND E.) PUTNAM's Family to SYRACUSE CITY, ONANDAGA COUNTY, NEW YORK (1930 U.S. CENSUS, Sheet# 11A, WARD 11, BLOCK 1128). Some of the Phillips family continued to live in MORRIS PLAINS, EAST ORANGE, ESSEX COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, but I have been unable to find any descendents there. (family of HARRIETT CURTIS-AUSTIN-PHILLIPS married to VANN RICHARD PHILLIPS)......................
I located this family treasure while I was looking through our local church library (OLD TENNENT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH located next to MONMOUTH BATTLEFIELD in TENNENT (Freehold area), NEW JERSEY). It seems our Pastor is an avid collector of old BIBLES and he puts them on the library shelves for all to look at. I am an amateur Genealogist and I happened upon this BIBLE and I asked if I could locate the family to return this treasure to them.
I would like to turn this bible over to a descendant of one of the Daughters if possible. It is Free as I feel that they would want this as a Family Keepsake for their future Generations to see and cherish...
"THIS BIBLE NEEDS TO GO HOME!!!"
''''PLEASE POST THIS TO YOUR "AUSTIN ASSOCIATION" WEB PAGE""
***Please contact me at....... austinbible@yahoo.com ***
Thanks for your help!!
GARY 'DOC' NADEN
Newark Daily Advocate
Newark, Ohio
June 21, 1886

MEMORIAL SKETCH COL. SILAS AUSTIN
the veteran pioneer of Kirkersville, died there during the last week in May, at the great age of 87 years, 3 months, and 14 days. He was a native of Rutland county, Vermont, born February 10, 1799, emigrated to Licking county, Ohio, in 1817, married Emily Buckland in 1819, and survived her more than 10 years. Three of their eight children are still living, and eight grand children. Col. Austin was much interested in military affairs, and for many years served as a company and also as a regimental commander. When Captain John R. Duncan, in 1847, raised a calvary company for service in the Mexican war the deceased joined the "Licking Rangers" and served to the close of the war. He was one of Licking's oldest pioneers.
Austin child burial in Arvonia Cemetery

I am searching for family members of a child with the surname of Austin who was buried in Arvonia Cemetery, Osage Co., KS. The child was born in Arvonia and died on 2-28-1896 but no parent is listed.

I am working on a book for the Osage Co., KS Historical Society that will cover the people who are buried at the Arvonia Cemetery, located near Arvonia, KS. I would like to include birth-death-burial dates, parents & siblings, cause of death and any interesting family information; such as where they came from, military history, family lore, occupations, etc. I will NOT be listing any birth dates of living individuals and any information used will be the type that is easily accessible by anyone.

I have a list of burials that is a compiled list from two different sources but it only covers up through the early 1990’s. I hope to complete this list to include all burials up until now.

If you would like to add any information to your ancestor/family member’s listing, please contact me directly at newtonmac@msn.com . Please type “Arvonia Cemetery” in the subject line so I don’t miss your email. With 800+ burials, I cannot list all the names here so I’m listing the surnames. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to help. Keep in mind that most of the ladies are buried under their married names. If you’re not sure if your family member is buried in Arvonia, contact me and I’ll check for you.

Albert, Angles, Antrim, Atchison, Austin, Hart, Bailey, Barnett, Barr, Bebb, Behrendt, Benson, Blake, Bontz, Booth, Boring, Bosley, Botkin, Boyce, Briggs, Brower, Bugg, Campbell, Chambers, Clark, Clotfelter, Cosley, Cottrell, Cowden, Crabtree, Crippen, Davies, Davis, Decker, Dobson, Edison, Edwards, Elishan, Ellis, Evans, Felton, Ferguson, Frye, Funston, Gavin, Goodwin, Graham, Gray, Griffith, Griffiths, Hamman, Harris, Harvey, Hebbe, Henry, Herr/Haerr, Hilding, Hillis, Holmquist, Hooper, Hotchkiss, Hughes, Humphreys, Jenkins, Jennings, Jensen, Jeremy, Jernigan, Jessee, Jones, Kesler, King, Kirk, Knight, Larson, Leach, Lewis, Lloyd, Lowman, Maloney, Marker, Mays, Metzger, Miller, Mochamer, Monfort, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Moses, Near, Nesbitt, Newlee, Newman, Newton, Ormsby, Owens, Padgett, Parker, Parrey, Parry, Peterson, Pettay, Phillips, Pickens, Powell, Prentice, Price, Protheroe, Rees, Reynolds, Rich, Richards, Roberts, Robinson, Rouland, Rumph, Samuel, Sanderson, Schedel, Shepard, Shirley, Sloan, Small, Smith, Southworth, Spillman, Standiferd, Stephens, Sterrett, Still, Tankersley, Terril, Terrion, Thomas, Thompson, Trueblood, Umdenstock, Walker, Wallace, Ward, Watkins, Whaner, Whildin, White, Williams, Williamson, Wilson, Witherspoon, Woodin

Anita (Newton) McKinney
Colorado Springs, CO
Derancy or Derance AUSTIN b 1832 NY - maybe Delaware Co

His sister was Delcina E, birthdate given 22 Nov 1835 PA, she married Walter Burger Olmstead or Olmsted.

I picked these two up as teens 1850 West Union, Steuben Co, NY census. One of Derancy's sons, Adelbert, once gave his father's bp as "Delaware" (it's usually NY) and I happen to know that back then many whose roots were from Delaware Co NY still did that. Derence lived to 1920 at least, with daugher Ann and son-in-law John Boucher, just over the state line at Harrison, Potter Co, PA.

One file at familysearch.org gives his father as Rufus, mother as Polly. Can anyone place this family, please?
