Re: Bio of Zachary Taylor Autry

Just for the record I have finally located and verified that Zachary Taylor Autry's first wife Rebecca "Jane" Mcbee Autry Murdock died in Douglas Arizona in 1928. She had remarried and died using her middle name "Jane" Braley. I have copies of the death certificates showing her as the mother of J.J. and Charles B. Murdock. I have death certificates for Jane, C.B, J.J and Jessie Lively Murdock.

She was married to J.M. Murdock, John Madison Murdock. They had 2 sons. C. B. Charles B. Murdock was born December 16, 1891 in Carlsbad,New Mexico. He died Feb 9, 1943 in an automobile accident in Douglas Arizona. I have been to the gravesites of Jane , her son CB. and also the grave site of Jessie Lively Murdock, wife of C.B. Jessie and C.B had 6 sons. I have a copy of the obituary for Jane Braley, and Jessie Lively from the Douglas Arizona paper.

J.J. Murdock. James Jasper Murdock was born 6-13-1880 in Texas and he did not die until Jan 23,1956 at the age of 75. He died in Yuma but lived in Safford Arizona.

I am still trying to find where she married Braley but thought I would share this information with anyone interested in Zachary Taylor Autry's first wife.

I have been to the Douglas Arizona Calvary Cemetary and took pictures of all 3 gravesites, Jane,Charles and Jessie.

If you go online to arizona geneology they have her listed as Jane Bealey, but that is a typo when they transcribed it. By going to the grave site, and printing out the d.c. and getting the obit it is Braley.

My gg-grandfather Durgan (1828-1865) was one of the Autrys who left NC for Tenn. He was a son of William A. Autry. Durgan was one of the Benton, Carroll etc County Autry brothers and cousins who were in the 7th Tenn Calvary Union Army in the Civil War. If you would like to compare notes, my email is PhylMorels@aol.com.
Phyllis Autry Morel
By now you know Wm A's father was Elijah (1765-1830?), son of James (1742-1830), son of Cornelius (1709-1779). William A. had several children, including Durgan, who was my gg-grandfather. So we are both descendants of Wm. A. My Durgan left NC for Tenn, married and had several children also. If you would like to compare notes, PhylMorels@aol.com is my email.

Hi
I am searching for more info on Harpie Autry who married Malcolm Darroch in Cumberland Co, NC. She was born in 1820 and died in Feb 1860 in Childbirth in Chatham Co NC.
Alfred R. and Elizabeth Johnson Autry

Family legend says that Alfred R. and Elizabeth J. Autry were both killed in a buggy accident in 1892 in or near Moultrie, GA. Some credible evidence exists to support this story.

(1)Both are buried in the New Hope Baptist Cemetery in Moultrie, Colquitt, GA. Each headstone gives the same death year-1892.
(2)In addition a short item in "The Constitution" (Atlanta, GA) of January 13, 1894 states,"The judge of the Superior Court of this circuit has passed an order allowing the guardian of the Autry boys to sell the extensive turpentine farm near here belonging to A. R. Autry's sons."
(3)Furthermore, another short item from the above newspaper of December 31, 1894 stated that a Mr. Newton had proposed to the legislature that Latta M. Malette be granted majority status. Latta M. Autry was a son of Alfred and Elizabeth Autry. He was 18 in 1894.

Latta M. Autry changed the spelling of his last name to Autrey. He appears on the Personal Tax Rolls of Greene Co., MS, in 1903, and he married Lelia Brannan in Greene Co., MS, in November 1903.

Does anyone in Colquitt Co., GA, or in Moultrie, GA, have any information concerning this family and the "buggy accident"?
Unfortunately I do not know the exact link to Cornelius.
Samuel Hugh Autrys parents were William Jackson Autry (1841-1896) and Amanda L Howard (1839-1908). William Jackson Autry is my gggrandfather. William's daughter, Dona Lee Autry Vaughn was my greatgrandmother. She had a daughter named Vivian Earline, who was my great aunt.Vivian Earline was born in 1908 after Annie Earline who was her cousin and I think they probably got the name Earline from Annie. William Jackson's father was George J Autry,
born 2 Oct 1818 in GA, died 11 Jul 1863 at Camp Winder Hospital, Richmond, VA. He was buried on 12 Jul 1863 in space T434 Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond VA. My cousins Peter, Penny and I had a headstone placed on his grave. The name in the record at the cemetery is George J. Anthony, but the military records proved that he was the only person buried there from the hospital on that day was George J Autry. George's wife was Eliza Anderson Johns b 27 Nov 1819 in GA. From family information from cousins long deceased George J had a brother William and a brother Jacob who was a coachmaker. William and Jacob Autry lived near George in Chambers Co AL in 1860. I believe that their mother's name was Nancy from census records in the area. I have lots more info if you are interested you email me at Judy@orvsplace.net. How are you related to Samuel?
Judy

I am an Awtrey decendant. According to my records John F. Awtry (Awtrey) was the son on John B. and Martha S. Awtry. He was born 9 Jan 1826. He was educated principally at an Academy in Troup County. On 20 Mar 1853 he married Mary E. Green in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia.

These are the only Awtreys that I know of that lived in Troup County and by the dates they could be the parents of your g-grandmother.

Perhaps if you search the census of Troup County, Georgia for 1860 and following you can find the children listed.

If you are talking about John A Autry that married Winnie Watson, believe he was descended from Absolum Autry, son of Cornelius Autry. John C. Autry descends from James C. Autry who was brother of above mentioned Absolum Autry. No one knows what the "C" stands for, but probably Corneilus. However, son of John C Autry was William Christopher Autry. John C. Autry's 3rd wife Cynthia Ann Weldon is buried at Wynnewood,Garvin,Oklahoma. Daughter Louise Campbell Autry who married George Robert Norman, died and buried at Purcell , McClain,Oklahoma.

Do you receive information from the autry list at
autry@rootsweb.com

If you not, you should subscribe.
Judy
Cynthia, not sure what you are looking for regarding Carlton Autry. Need more information to help you such as location and dates. Do you know parentage or grandparents? This information would help place in right family in locating ancestry.
Judy
jsavgyll@netscape.net

Samuel and Louella had 4 children, is that correct? I have william Franklin, Samuel Hugh, Annie Earline and Gerald.
Also, which son of Cornelius the Immigrant does this line descend from?
I have scant information on this family but do enjoy completing the puzzle.

Chris

Judy,

I believe my family is very closely related to your William A. and Mary Campbell Autry. Haven't figured out the connection, but I know there is one. Having trouble finding any info on any Autrys in Carroll Co.,Tn. besides William A. and descendants. I know there were Autrys there besides William A., his children, and grandchildren, but can't find any info on the few others.

My g-g-grandfather John A. Autry lived in the far southeast corner of Carroll Co., TN. just a few miles from William A. and family.

Your John C. and my John A. were both on roll at Chinn's Chapel in Denton Co., TX. Has anyone ever figured out what the "C" is for?

My John A. later moved into Wise Co., TX. The place he lived was only about 30-40 miles from where Gene Autry's family lived in Cooke Co., TX. When Gene was a very young man, late teens, probably, they would come help the family at harvest time. My great-grandfather and his siblings all called him "Cousin Gene." Later, my grandfather's sisters corresponded with Gene. They also called him "Cousin Gene." I know none of them were first cousins. I have always wondered if my John A. was a brother, or maybe a first cousin, or nephew to your William A.

Do you know the relatives names that they visited in Oklahoma, and what part of Oklahoma?

Where in Oklahoma did John C.'s children live? I knew that John had lived in Arkansas, but I lost track of his children.

Janet

My John A. Autry who married Winnie Watson, is a different John A. than the son of Absolum. We always get excited when someone says our John A. is the son of Absolum, and then we realize which Absolum they are talking about, and they just aren't the same man. There were 2 John A. Autrys. One the son of Absolum, and the other is my John A., who because of the Carroll Co., Tn. connection, I believe is also a descendant of James.

According to the census records, James, b. 1742, son of Cornelius had several "unknown" children. And, James' son Elijah,b. 1765, (William A.'s father), also had several "unknown" children.
I believe my John A. is a descendant of one of these "unknown" children, either of James or of Elijah.
My John was born either in NC or Tn. The census records say both, and either is possible. There is no family oral history of any of my Autrys being in Alabama, which if my memory is correct, is where Absolum's family went.

The reason I asked about the "C" in John C, is because in the descendants of William A. & Mary Campbell Autry I have found a few with "Columbus" in their name, . My John A. also had a son named John C., and none of us know what his middle name was either. Since my John's son John C. was born about the time your John C. and my John A. were both at Chinn's Chapel in Denton Co., TX., I thought my John A. might have named his son after your John C.

I didn't know where Cynthia Ann Weldon Autry was buried. Is either of John C's wives buried near him in Arkansas? . I also didn't know that any of his children came to Oklahoma. I live about 30 miles from Purcell, Ok.

I don't belong to the Autry list, but I go to it and read the posts about once a month. I'm working on so many family lines, that it's easier that way.

Janet
I am searching for information on Old John Autry who signed the letter for state hood for Arkansas in Old Lawrence County Arkansas. He evidently died there as his there are records of his children, Henry, Simon, Sarah and Elizabeth going to school there and the school being paid for by Annie Autry. There are records showing Simon and Henry being in Izard county in 1830 thru 1840. There are numerous names- Awtree, Ottery, ect under which they can be found. In 1850 there is only Anna Ottery with John Jackson and Cynthia. Cynthia was my ggreat grandmother and I have been unsuccessful in finding any information on her. I know that there are others researching this family and that at one time a poster Larry Hill had posted that he had informtion on this family but I have been unable to make contact with Mr. Hill. If anyone has informtian on this family it would be greatly appreciated.

Helen, it's Diane. Just being desperate I guess and thought I'd try the message boards again. I went to Sallisaw Cem. and saw Cynthias grave. Her stone is so beautiful. The picture doesn't do it justice. The records at the library and funeral home say that WR is buried there too but there is no record for his grave at the cem. I wonder if he doesn't have a stone. That would be so sad.
