I too think Henry may have been known as Harry, but Henry Aveling married Minnie Louisa Leney, 1900 in Bromley Kent. The Marriage cert gives Henry's father as Francis Aveling. Minnie's father was Willam Leney. They had 1 son George Harry Aveling in 1910. I hope this helps.

While there are two William Avelings listed in the PRO index, none shows for the 11th foot. However, the index is not complete.

If your man served for 12 years he would have been eligible to receive a pension. However, the pension did not carry over to the widow. When he died, his wife would not have received the pension.

Ron

Yes, my reading of the 1901 census suggests that the 'Stredley, Berkshire, given as a birthplace for Francis Aveling, is someone's reading of the census taker's version of 'Sheatley, Berkshire'. Which fits my information about the Aveling family George and Jane (Pearce), who raised a batch of children in Streatley, Birkshire, including Francis, born about 1850, and my partner's ancestor, Henry, who as an adult lived in 42 Tylvey Rd,Bromley, just around the corner from Waldo street, until he took his family to Austraiia shortly after the 1881 census. Every thing points to Henry and Francis being brothers and neighbours and work partners - plasterers and small builders - before that. The source of my information on Frank and family is a descendant on that side of the family, Jan Hurst, atjhurst2820@aol.com - I am sure she would be happy for you to contact her.

I've established 3 Aveling families of Bromley, eliminated one thanks to this message board, but am looking for Henry Aveling as in the 1901 Census married to Minnie. Cannot find him in previous years. But suspect him to be either a George or Harry (or combination of both). Was definitely from Bromley though. Any help would be appreciated in either identifying or eliminating him from those families in Bromley.

My GGGGrandfather was William Lott. His daughter was Martha Mathilda Lott born 1845 in Newington which is close by the Elephant. William was a coal dealer and also possibly a mariner. I have found 4 possible William Lotts born in Bermondsey or Streatham at about the right time. I may know more when I get William's marriage certificate, it took a bit of finding as he married Martha's mother Frances Croxall 23 years after the event!

Frank - Did you ever receive an answer to your question? If not, Lot, born 1800, married Nancy Talbot. Lot was the son of Joel and Mary (Molly) Wheeler. Joel born about 1761-62 and died 9 March 1813, Dummerston, VT. Mary, daughter of John and Jedidah (Bigelow) Wheeler, born 12 October 1767, Shrewsbury, MA, died 6 March 1826, age 60 years at Dummerston, VT. I have more of the Stockwell line back. If you do not already have it, email me and I will provide it. However, I believe I have corresponded with you.

Dear Graham - thanks very much for your reply. Your information is a great help; the Streatley lead wasn't going anywhere. I will now pursue it with renewed energy! The family seems to have made a habit of naming sons for fathers - we have three generations of Henry/Harries. Did I say in the original posting that I have the parents of Henry (born 1847) as George Aveling and Jane Pearce? Does that fit your information? Cheers, Marian

Hi Marian, thanks for your reply.
The dates look promising, great grandfather was George Aveling born 1875/6, being 23 when he married in 1898 in Bromley, Kent. His father was also George (from marriage certificate), and was a Carpenter at that time. No other information on the older generation at this point. If you come across anything relevant in the 1881 census I would be most grateful for something that would take me backwards. Hard to do with no concrete evidence.
Regards, Jan
My husband, Harry Aveling, is descended from a Harry Mitson Aveling, born in Bromley Kent in 1871, whose father Henry brought out his family to Sydney Australia in 1885. Henry Aveling was born in Great Farringdon, Berkshire,(Streatley according to the 1881 Census) in 1847; his father George Aveling was a gardener. Henry seems to have had a brother living in Bromley in the 1870s, at least there was another Aveling family living nearby in the 1881 census, but I don't have those details with me at the moment. I could check if you were interested. Cheers, Marian Quartly

There was an "L. Stockwell" and "L. Stockwell, Jr." on a passenger list for the ship "Panama" who arrived with our ancestor in San Francisco in 1853. I do not know if they were part of the same traveling party except the name came right beside our relative's and his friend's. They were from Windham County VT ( OR MA) and headed to the gold fields. Other surnames in the party: H.. WHITCOMB, O.J. HAINES OR O.J. HAYNES, C.T.HOWE, WEEKS, ELIJAH L. DAVIS OF PA, W. ABBOT
I would be very happy to hear if anyone has information on these Stockwells
In response to your query, one John Kingsbury Lott married an Aveling about 1816 in London. They lived near The Elephant and Castle I believe. I do not know the answer to the information you are seeking. My family disappears with Frederick Aveling in 1797 even though he was a well known chap and his portrait hangs in the Lord Mayor's Offices in London. The Lotts who intermarried with the Avelins appear in a will along with Frederick Aveling, though with no relationships stated. If you do ever manage to find out anything re. Lott/Aveling I would be delighted to hear from you. Sorry i can't be of more help. Good Luck!

Sincerely

Nicholas Aveling

Frederick AVELING born 1797/1800

Since the 1880's my family have been trying to trace the parents of my ancestor Frederick Aveling, born 1 January 1797 or 1800 in either Luton, Bedfordshire or in London. Parish registers of Luton at that time are defective. Can anyone suggest any alternative means of finding his parents? We know so much about him, and his portrait hangs in the Lord Mayor's Offices in London which makes the lack of knowledge as to his ancestry more frustrating. Is anyone researching the AVELING family? Apparently something 'bad' occurred in his family that caused him to forget them, so a letter from 1875 tells us. If anyone could help me or make any suggestions I would be most grateful. It is difficult trying to research from new Zealand too - we couldn't be much further away! Nicholas Aveling

Hi Marian
My family are all from Bromley, Kent. I live in Platt, near Sevenoaks. My father, grandfather and great grandfather were all called Francis. The UK online census for 1901 shows gg Aveling (living at 14 Waldo Road, Bromley) as being born in Stredley, Berks. Your message highlights this is a misspelling from Streatley. Aged 57 in 1901, he would have been born in 1843/4. Therefore he could be the brother you refer to.
Regards
Janet, Sorry for the delayed reply. It seems that the name Aveling was incorrectly written on a certificate and the correct spelling should have been Eveling. So it appears that there is no connection. But with the vast number of different spellings of names from the same family - who knows! Jennifer.

Hello Nick, I would like to help you regarding your search. I see that Jonathan Morris emailed you regarding our ancestor Deidric Eveling and said that he changed his name from Aveling. I have no knowledge that this was so. As far as I know the name has always been Eveling. But would be happy to be given alternate information. At present I am in touch with another person in N.Z. who is also researching the Eveling name. Perhaps there is no connection but if you are interested I will give you his email address - just in case! Jennifer, Kent, England.
