AVENT/AVANCE and Variants Surname DNA Project

Inviting all surname variants to become involved in the Avent/Avance Y-DNA Group Study.

If you are unfamiliar with Y-DNA Genetic Genealogy, it is based on the biological fact that a man's Y Chromosome is passed down intact from fathers to sons, generation after generation, with only occasional mutations. Therefore men who share a common paternal-line ancestor will have identical or highly similar Y-DNA Markers.

Family Tree DNA is currently offering their tests at deeply discounted prices, which is allowing many to get involved who were not able to before. But the discounted prices are only in effect through August 2008.

We have created a Surname Group Project for the Avent/Avance surnames, which includes the variants: Avents, Aven, Avens, Avants, Avan, and possibly even some with the surname Evans.

Due to the nature of these studies, the more who are involved, the more conclusions can be drawn from the data.

My great grandfather was Alonzo Lester Aven. I believe his brother is Hubert Aven. Alonzo Lester married Mable King and lived in Hart, TX (Castro County).

What information do you have that shows John as the husband of Lucinda? I have not been able to verify his name. The only thing I have seen is a tombstone listed as J.P. Avans d.1841. I keep seeing his name listed as John, but there is no John listed for his age in the census records for 1830 or 1840. Would appreciate your help. I am descended from Isham and his daughter, Lucinda m. Willis Cagle.

I am searching for information on Sallie Aven who married John Spurlock. John was in Barbour County, Ala. as early as 1833. His grandson was named William Green Spurlock. I wondered if there might be a connection. "Old" John was born ca 1756 in N.C. I have been unable to Sallie.

Would your Della have a sister named Adeline "Addie"?

I've been searching for parents or siblings of Addie's. She was born 1880 in Red Oak, Kemper Co., MS and later moved to Ellis Co., TX. She married Robert Lang. After the death of Robert, Addie moved to OK and remarried to a Jones.

Am looking for information on my greatgrandmother Della Aven who married John Edward Marshall in 1891 in Collin County Texas. 1920 census record shows that she and both of her parents were born in Mississippi, but I can find no record of them prior to her marriage.

Ray, I may have some information for you. It is my understanding that Aven is a mispelling of the surname Avent. A Peter and a William Avent married Massey sisters in the early 1700s. Alonzo Lester married Mable King had Hillery Leon had Richard of Dallas Tx.

Alonzo Jutson Aven died 23 May 1936 Tx. Burried Lubbock Tx. I only have wife's initials S A-- (Would appreciate any additions) He was in the Civil War- and was a merchant/farmer.

He was the son of Elijah M. born 1825 Carroll Co. Tn. died 1 Jan 1893 Nesbitt, DeSota, Ms. and Nancy J born a 1830 Ms. died about 1850-51 Elijah had two other marriages- Melvina Howard 21 Aug 1869 and Margaret E. Heath 26 Sep. (Year not known)
By Nancy J he also had Eliza, John W., and William Terrell born 49, 52, and 54.

By Margaret Emeline Heath- William Green, L. Madison and Ollie 61.

He was the child of Amos Aven- my ancestor and Matilda Rogers of Chatham Co. NC 1810, to Carroll Co Tn by 1820.Also lived Henderson Co. Tn. You will probably find many of my postings on this family on this same board.
I came from son James Stanford, who left Tn., and went to Henry Co. Ga. to marry Rebecca Rogers (a cousin??)

I was browsing Ancestry.com and saw the message board. My name is James Thomas Aven presently living in Denton, Texas. My father's side of the family originally was from Mississippi. Have you found out any information which you may be willing to pass on to me?

My grandfather's name was Thomas Alva Aven. He was born about 1881 in either Mississippi or Arkansas. Died in 1960 in Durant, OK. My father's name was John Floy Aven.

My father was Joe Syethe Aven. His Mother was a Stoggner, born in Water Valley Mississippi. She died when he was too young to remember. I don't know what happened to his father. He was reared by the Stoggners in Water Valley. If any Stoggners know let me know.

Looking for Aven folk who moved from MS to Ok to Celeste, Texas. Sophia McGuire married John Taylor Aven. Old letter dated 1931, states that John Taylor was near death in 1909. John Avens, born 1755, married Lucinda ?. Lucinda was born around 1775 and died after Nov.1875. He died on July 17,1841 in th Big Creek Community of Monroe County, TN.

Their children were:
Martha "Mattie" Avens; Elizabeth Avens md. Thomas Lee. Divine Sr.; Isham Avens; William M. Avens; John Avens.

Does anyone know who John's parents were?

In the 1850 Mary Bellyeu age 60 in James Stanford Aven home. I understand she first married Elisha Rodgers but which Bellyeu, Belyeu, Bellyew did she marry later? I am researching Belyeu/Belyew family in GA and always looking for a connection.

Siblings, Thomas, John W., Elijah, William Fern, Chesley N., Eliza and 3 unknowns. I have a copy of land records in Mississippi that show Green R.Aven purchased land, 543 acres, October 1, 1860 and that it was a "cash entry sale" in Grenada County, MS. A Ferney C Aven had made a purchase June 1, 1860 of 543 acres. These purchases were in Sections 6E and 7E respectively, not sure of Township and Range. Greene Aven was a brother to my grandfather Amos Wesley Aven.

Levi Smith Aven was the son of Chesley Aven (born ca. 1812. died ca. 1868)and Mary Smith (born ca. 1818). Chesley was the son of Amos Aven (born ca. 1781) and Matilda Rogers (born ca. 1782).
Levi Smith Aven married Catherine Diggs, daugther of Benjamin and Catherine Diggs.
The 1900 Yalobusha County Mississippi census states that Levi and Catherine had 6 children, 5 of which I have record of:
1. Mary Catherine, born 1862. Married A.G. Bounds
2. Margaret, born ca. 1864
3. Helen, born ca. 1866. Married D.W. Murphree
4. John Winston, born May 1871. Married Louella Payne.
Died 1958. Burried Chapel Hill Cemetery in Calhoun
County, Mississippi.
5. Leila, born Oct. 16, 1876. Died Sept. 5, 1898. Burried
Chapel Hill Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi

I am looking for information about the Aven name. My Great grandfather was Walter W. Aven, born in Abingdon, Va 12-11-1880. He had three sons4 Stanley Aven, (8-17-1905 - 7-24-1965) & Thomas Aven (5-15-1910 - 1-18-1971) & Howard Aven (my Grandfather) (9-25-1917 - 6-25-1985. Walter's wife was Margie McConnell. I thought by your first E-Mail that your name was familiar. I was at that reunion and your wife had a lap top and provided me with copies of info that I didn't have. You confirmed this by your last E-Mail. I had been concentrating on my father's family mostly but this last year have started on the Avens with more enthusiasm. Your wife and I discussed the possibility that James Aven(t) might not be accurate information. It seems that Thomas Aven(t) is the more likely ancestor. I will await more knowledgeable research than is available to me. Anthony Aven sent me a descendancy chart that was remarkable for it's research. I look forward to any info you can provide. Hi David. Yes I did meet John Quincy Aven at the reunion. He gave me several stories about Amos that I did not know. The fact that he remembered him was exciting to me as I have no memory of him as I was around 4 or 5 when he died. He was my mother's father. I am in Georgia visiting my daughter and didn't check the message board until today. Will be glad to get anything you can let me have. My daughter lives in Peachtree City.

You should check the message board and correspond with William Chesley Aven as he is a direct ancestor of Greene Rogers Aven.
