AVENT/AVANCE and Variants Surname DNA Project

Inviting all surname variants to become involved in the Avent/Avance Y-DNA Group Study.

If you are unfamiliar with Y-DNA Genetic Genealogy, it is based on the biological fact that a man's Y Chromosome is passed down intact from fathers to sons, generation after generation, with only occasional mutations. Therefore men who share a common paternal-line ancestor will have identical or highly similar Y-DNA Markers.

Family Tree DNA is currently offering their tests at deeply discounted prices, which is allowing many to get involved who were not able to before. But the discounted prices are only in effect through August 2008.

We have created a Surname Group Project for the Avent/Avance surnames, which includes the variants: Avents, Aven, Avens, Avants, Avan, and possibly even some with the surname Evans.

Due to the nature of these studies, the more who are involved, the more conclusions can be drawn from the data.

To join the project, please come to our Surname Group Page at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/avance

and follow the link in the upper left that says "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP"

But act quickly, because the discounted prices are only good through the end of August.
Cory,
What information do you have that shows John as the husband of Lucinda? I have not been able to verify his name. The only thing I have seen is a tombstone listed as J.P. Avans d.1841. I keep seeing his name listed as John, but there is no John listed for his age in the census records for 1830 or 1840. Would appreciate your help. I am descended from Isham and his daughter, Lucinda m. Willis Cagle.
Thanks for any help with this family.

Ray, I may have some information for you. It is my understanding that Aven is a mispelling of the surname Avent. A Peter and a William Avent married Massey sisters in the early 1700s. If in fact Aven is actually Avent then that would be your connection.
I wish we could clear up the mystery after Amos Aven. I have had two or three different readings on this, one being James Aven(t)as his father, his mother Mary Eliza Stanford. Another Thomas Avent father and Rebecca Stevens mother. If you have any info on this would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,

Betty R Johnson

I thought by your first E-Mail that your name was familiar. I was at that reunion and your wife had a lap top and provided me with copies of info that I didn't have. You confirmed this by your last E-Mail. I had been concentrating on my father's family mostly but this last year have started on the Avens with more enthusiasm. Your wife and I discussed the possibility that James Aven(t) might not be accurate information. It seems that Thomas Aven(t) is the more likely ancestor. I will await more knowledgeable research than is available to me. Anthony Aven sent me a descendancy chart that was remarkable for it's research. I look forward to any info you can provide. Tell your wife hello.
Betty

Hi David. Yes I did meet John Quincy Aven at the reunion. He gave me several stories about Amos that I did not know. The fact that he remembered him was exciting to me as I have no memory of him as I was around 4 or 5 when he died. He was my mother's father. I am in Georgia visiting my daughter and didn't check the message board until today. Will be glad to get anything you can let me have. My daughter lives in Peachtree City.

The info I have on your ancestor is as follows: His name was Greene Rogers Aven, b. May 11, 1823,Carroll Co.,TN; d. December 16, 1889 Grenada Co. MS; m. Sarah Frances Lyon,1851.Father was Amos Aven (1775-1855) m. Matilda Rogers (1780-1856) in 1808. Siblings, Thomas, John W., Elijah, William Fern, Chesley N., Eliza and 3 unknowns. I have a copy of land records in Mississippi that show Green R. Aven purchased land, 543 acres, October l, 1860 and that is was a "cash entry sale" in Grenada County, MS. A Ferney C. Aven had made a purchase June 1, 1860 of 543 acres. These purchases were in Sections 6E and 7E respectively, not sure of Township and Range.
I also have a record of William Greene Aven, b.January 28, 1839, Carroll County, TN; d. February 13, 1874, Yalobusha Co., MS; m. Lucy Ann Pate. This info copied from family Bible. This Greene Aven was a brother to my grandfather, Amos Wesley Aven.
You should check the message board and correspond with William Chesley Aven as he is a direct ancestor of Greene Rogers Aven.

My grandmother was Cleo Moore Aven, born in Dawson, Georgia (Terrell County)B. 1883,d. l959. The Aven family came from Bronwood, Dawson and Parrot, Georgia. A memory marker was recently placed in Dawson by a member of my family. The Aven family tree that I have starts approx 1800 with William Aven, Eudonah Wesley Aven, W.G.Aven , Carl C. Aven, who was a physician in Atlanta, Ga. , James Lord Aven etc. etc. etc. If any of these names sound familiar, please let me know and I will proceed. The fact that one of your ancestors had the middle name of Terrell leads me to believe there might be some connection to Terrell Co. Ga. Please advise. Hope I can help.

I don't know if this will help, but it might direct you to the right source. My great grandfather was William Green Aven from Ga. He had several children and I believe one was named William. William Green Aven was born in Louisville (Jefferson Co., Ga. 18, Feb. 1850 and died 23 July 1912 in Atlanta. He is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery, Fulton Co. Ga. He was married twice. His first wife is unknown, and second wife was Mary Emma Jane Moore, who was also from Louisville, Ga. b. 21 June 1848 and died 23 Nov. 1915, also buried Hollywood Cemetery. They were married 25 Dec. 1874 Dawson, (Terrell Co. ) Ga. I would imagine that there would be a marriage record either in Louisville or Dawson for the first marriage. III remember my grandmother speaking of a brother named William. Good luck!

Okay! William Green Aven's second wife was Mary Emma Jane Moore. They were married Dec. 25, 1874, Dawson (Terrell Co. Ga.) I have the marriage certificate which documents this date. They are both buried in the Hollywood Cemetery which is located in Fulton Co., Ga. I have the cemetery records documenting these dates: W.G. Avenb. Feb 18, 1850; d. July 23, 1912. Emma Moore Aven, b. June 21, 1848; d. Nov 23, 1915. "Garrett's Necrology of Atlanta and Environs" by Franklin Garrett (Obituary Abstracts) states that W. G. Aven, age 62 "leaves wife, 4 sons and one daughter." I presume the daughter to be my grandmother, Cleo Moore Aven Peeples. W. G. Aven's death certificate states that he lived at 378 Grant St. and was the son of James Aven. I have information on Cleo, but would like to have more information on the other brothers. Were any of them in the Confederate War? I am in the UDC and always looking for more connections to this war. My grandmother told me stories when I was a child, but I didn't much care at the time. I do not know anything much about the first wife, except that her name was Amelia Sharpe. Tell me what you know and we can perhaps fill in the blanks. Thanks.
Judy Gray
