Many of the Avera's are from Smithfield, Johnston Co, NC. Prior to that they can be traced back to England. I have most of them in my tree file.

My grandfather was William David Avera from Smithfield.

The correct spelling is Avera. The "y" crept in somewhere along the way and some families used that. But it is Avera.

Look in my tree for a lot of Avera's. My Mom was Jane Kennon Avera, one of 11 siblings born to William D Avera and his wife.

John Pearson

Hi!
Long time no hear! :) Yes, we are related. Isaac was shot at the battle of Chancellorsville in May 6th, 1863, something like that and died something like May 16th, 1863 in a Richmond hospital. I don't have the exact dates right off hand at this moment. I have his family all the way back to Henry, who came from England to Virginia in 1642. A couple or three generations later moved to NC. Hope to hear from you again. Thanks for replying. Mary Ann Man

Hello, I'm a descendant also of Alex Avera. Do you have information on Thomas Avera b. 21 May 1798 in Averasboro,NC. and died before 1870 in Grove Township, Harnett Co. NC. He married Mary Ennis 24 Apr 1824 in Averasboro. I am trying to find the connection between him and his children, one of them is Isaac who is my great great grandfather, b. 1826 d. 16 May 1863. His first wife, Chloe Bird, was my great great grandmother. Do you have any proof for I am trying to join the DAR? Thank you very much.

Re: AVERA/RHODES Wake County NC

Hi Cousin,

Here is part of an email I sent to my family a few years back.

Begin..
I finally made some headway with Elizabeth "Lizzie" Avara, wife of Jonathan Rhodes. I know who her siblings were and I am comfortable that I know who her parents were.

The first break came in a land sale document from 1867. My last record of Lizzie was the 1860 census. Since she did not appear in the 1870 census I have always assumed she died sometime during that ten year span. When I found her and Jonathan listed in an index of deeds, mortgages and real estate conveyances I decided to acquire a copy. The document was probated (certified) in 1869. At a minimum I expected to close that ten year gap to 2 years or less. Boy was I surprised. :-)

Jonathan and Lizzie were not the only sellers. The land was jointly owned. The owners were listed as "Wm Avera, Sarah Avera, Jonathan Rhodes and wife Lizzie, Jas. Hobby and wife Martha and Tabitha Hobby". Boy did some of those names sound familiar.

I dug out my census data from 1850-1870. I remembered that there were some Avera's (Avara, Avery, Averyt: depending on the record you look at) living in close proximity that I had not previously been able to identify. Things started falling into place.

The 1850 data wasn't as much help as it could have been since all but one individual in the Avery household was listed by their first initial and last name. But it does help. Oh, the Avery's are listed as family #21 in the census. Jonathan Rhodes and family are #23. The Avery's are listed as follows:
==============================
1850 Census
Name  Sex Age
W(illiam) Avery M 33
P. Avery F 56 (More about her in moment)
P. Avery F 36 (This is Martha)
T(abitha) Avery F 22
Henry Avery M 19 (He is the only one whose name is spelled out)
S(arah)  F 15
==============================
1860 Census (Several houses down from Jonathan and Lizzie. I haven't listed William's new wife and child)
Name  Sex Age
William Avery M 44
Sarah Avery F 26
Mary Avery F 67 (I believe this to be P., age 56, in 1850. I can't account for the initial not matching the name. I can speculate that P may have been from a middle name. Also, Polly is a nickname for Mary. We'll probably never know for sure.)
Henry Avery M 29

Martha F 47 (Martha is enumerated with her husband James Hobby)
==============================
1870 Census (Living next door to Jonathan and Lizzie)
Name  Sex Age
William  M 54
Sally (Sarah) F 34

Martha F 56 (She is now head of household)
===============================

It was looking good so far but there still wasn't a solid link to prove that they were siblings of Lizzie. Then I found William's will.

(Will of William Avera of Wake County, North Carolina, 7 November 1864)

I William Avera of the County of Wake and state of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence I do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say:
1st. I will that my executor herein after named shall pay all my just debts.
2nd. I give to my two sisters Sally and Tabitha my land.
3rd. That all the rest of my property be sold and equally divided between my three sisters Elizabeth, Tabitha and Sally.
4th. I appoint J.J.L. McCuller my lawful executor. In w-- of when of I the said William Avera do hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th November AD 1864
William Avera {seal}
Signed and sealed
in the presence of
Hudson Stevens
Mat. McCullers

BINGO! When you add all of this together it spells family. :-)

Part 2 - The parents

The best clue comes from the 1850 & 1860 census. In 1850 we find P. Avery, age 56. In 1860 we find Mary Avery, age 67. As I stated earlier I believe these to be the same person. Using this information I started checking the marriage bond index for women named Mary that married and Avery prior to 1813. (1813 being the approximate birth year of the oldest sibling, Martha)

Assuming that they were married in Wake County and that their marriage was recorded then the only possibility is Simon Averyt and Mary Stevens. Their bond was dated 22 Jun 1812, which, by the way, was the year prior to Martha's birth. Mary Stevens would have been about 18 years of age.

Next I did a search of all the Avera's in the 1840 census in Wake County. For those who aren't familiar with the various US Censuses let me point out that prior to 1850 the census only listed the name of the head of household. All other members of the family were tallied and listed in groups such as "free white males ages 30-40"

There were three families of which one is an exact match. Head of Household...... Simon Avera. The other two families were not close.

Here is a comparison of our group of siblings to the 1840 data. The census data list the number of individuals in each age group. Below that I have listed the family members and their calculated ages in 1840:

(note: this is an abbreviated view. The actual census records ages up to 100+)
===============================================================================
|FREE WHITE MALES                   |FREE WHITE FEMALES                |
|    5   10  15  20  30  40  50  60 |    5   10  15  20  30  40  50  60|
|to to to to to to to to to |to to to to to to to to to|
|5   10  15  20  30  40  50  60  70 |5   10  15  20  30  40  50  60  70|
===============================================================================
1           1           1           1   1   1   1       1

Simon (age unknown)
Mary                                                                46
Martha                                                      26
William                 23
Elizabeth                                               19
Tabitha                                             12
Henry J      9
Sally (Sarah)                                    6

Unless the formatting is off you will plainly see that the groupings and ages fit wonderfully.

Other data? Well, I don't have high hopes for finding Simon Avera's will. If there was one it isn't listed in the General Index to Wills for Wake County. There was however a land transfer filed in 1844 between a Simon Avera and a William Avera. I plan to acquire a copy, and I hope it is legible, in the next few weeks. I hope to find some additional clues there.

The only other data I have at this time is from the final settlement of the Estate of William Avera. Estate sale buyers of interest include A. J. Rhodes and Sallie Avera (now in her 40's and still appears to be single).

Addendum:
I found Sarah's marriage license. She listed Simon and Mary as her parents.
End..

Feel free to contact me directly if you need a copy that is formatted better.

Chet

I see your notice is from Nov. 1 2002.
I remember my "Popper" very well to have been 9 years old when he died. Yes, he was from Berrien County, Ga., and moved to Orlando, Fla. I do believe he was a barber at one time. He and my grandmother (Queen V.
AVERA/RHODES Wake County NC

Trying to find a lead on Elizabeth Avera, whose marriage bond to Jonathan Rhodes was recorded in Wake County 12/22/1841.

These Rhodes lived in Panther Branch, Wake, in the southeast corner, very close to Johnston County. I know Johnston was the seedbed of the Averas, so I suspect that she was from there. There were several Averas in Wake in 1840, but none of them were in Panther Branch Township.

Jonathan Rhodes and Elizabeth Avera had children Andrew Jackson, Edgar Gaston, Lynn (male), Frances Mary, and Sarah Elizabeth.

Jonathan was still in Panther Branch in 1880, with the two daughters.

Her family legend has it that
the family is French Hugenot and I've seen at
the Fort Worth, Texas Public Library, a book
on Hugenot families with the name in it.
Unfortunately, I have not proof as yet.

Re: The Avera name

Although I know of no hispanic heritage in my own background, my books tell me that the name Avera is originally Spanish (from the Latin Avarium, like the root word for "aviary") and means "poultry yard owner" Avery, on the other hand means "Elf-Ruler", just in case Avera is a derivative of Avery. If you come up with anything pertinent to the Averas relocating from NC to GA. Let me know. I'm a Tarheel myself, living in California.

Regards,

Bob Hattaway

Re: Rachel Avera m. Bryant Harper, NC

Though this is a year later, I have information on your Rachel and William Avera. Actually there is no controversy about their children because William Avera left a detailed Will about 1795 in Johnston Co NC. What is controversial is the parents of this William Avera. He is definitely not the son of Thomas Avera Sr, Will dated 1761, Johnston Co NC. Would love to exchange research information with anyone who is researching Johnston Co NC Averas of the 1700's and early 1800's.
