Never knew I had a message board, so this maybe a might late. The sirname Averhart is of German derivative. Started out as Eberthardt or Eberhart. It appears my family originated in Tate County Mississippi from a John Averhart, his son Wes Averhart was my father's father. From my research I found that my grandfather wes previously married and had a son named George who was about 16 yeras older than my dad( Don't think my father knew about him as he was an only child). There may have been other children to that prior union that I have yet to discover. George and his mother Ana only showed up once in the 1920 census. My grandmother Lizzy (Wes' 2nd wife) maiden name was Easley(Jack) and her mother was a Bowie (Carrie). All were in the Tate County area. I wish I had gotten into this a little earlier when more of the older generation were still alive. Other sirname that appear in my family history are Shipp, Childress, Howard, Howell, Wingo, and Parson just to name a few. As I said this maybe late, but if I can in any way help in your reserach, let me know. Ther are curremtly averharts in MS, FL, AL, IL and CA

It seems after some research and ordering my father's birth certicate. My father's name was listeded as Eberhart on his b/c. I don't know if it was a a mistake by a midwife or my father's name some how got changed in school, but it was a shock to me. Both his mother and his father' s name were spelled the same way, so now there was some confusion. I did know that the name was originally germany and spelled Eberhardt but I didn't know my father had a hand in making part of the change. That may be the reason I have not been able to find any infromation on my grandfather. Good luck with you search

Hi Vicki, I read this when you first posted it and have wondered if you ever got anywhere with your search. I have also been trying to find Lorenzo (Lonzo or Lonso) Averhart/Nancy (Nannie) Yarbrough. Supposedly, Lorenzo is buried in Craighead Park Cemetary in Joensville, Ark. His tombstone reads " L. Z. Averhart, b. 1862, d. 1942. I don't know if "LZ" was a nickname because I don't think his middle initial was a Z. The only other information I have is that Nancy was born in Blyesville, Ark in 1875 and died in 1916. I don't know if this is correct but it's what I've been told by my husband's Aunt Brenda. I believe my husband Jim would be a (2nd) cousin of yours as Vashtie was my husband's father's aunt. Is Clate Carter your grandfather? If you have found anything new please let me know! Where do you live?

DeJuana,
Some helpful information relating to Being part Indian is true. My Grand dad on my Dad's side of the Family had a married a woman that was three quarter Cherokee Indian. Alos, During WWII Hitler was sending agents over here to gather(kidnap) former German nationals and have them serve in his army. Our family name was changed from Eberhardt to Averhart.

Some geneology search had been traced back to the shipping ports but could not get any further.

I have two pictures and negatives of My Grandmother. To look at her, one can tell that she was Indian. The Averhart family(or some)were plantation owners as well. And yes they did have slaves.

My Dad's name August Nelson Averhart, died in 1974. He and my mom divorced when I was under a year old and went their separate ways. My mom, Margaret Catherine Averhart, died in 1996. She married a Harper 20 yrs before she died.
I'll check with my son,who has been doing some family tree work, and see what he has found in his searches.

There are four girls and two boys born in the family of which two are twins. Me and my sister Patricia are the twins.

I have one uncle who is alive on my Dad's side of the family and he and his wife not too far from me. His name is Elvin and her name is Delila. The rest of the family has past away and I never did get to meet them.

Sincerely

David V. Averhart

Hi Vickie,
As you can see I am an Averhat also. The name Vashti sounds like a name I heard from my dad on occassion. His name was Charles Edward Averhart. He was born in Prattville, Alabama. He was the son of Robert and Estella
Averhart. I have an aunt in Pittsburgh, Pa. that may be able to help. Her name is Ethel Averhart-Moton. I haven't spoke to her since my dad died. Not by choice. It was a mess when he died. I beleive her phone number is 412 2423513. It's best to call after 9:00pm.
I would like to keep in touch, who knows we may be kin to one another.

geneaology of Averhart/Yarbrough Family

I'm trying to trace my grandfathers maternal family. All I know is Lonzo Averhart born in Louisana married Nancy Yarbrough and had 7 children one being my greatgrandmother Vashtie Averhart born 1891. She married a man last name Marlowe then my family name Carter. She died when I was a child, I have relatives with the name Averhart in Missouri who would like to find out information on Lonzo Ruffus Averhart and where the family originated, and if possibly of Indian descent. We have all been told we are but we have no records. There's not anyone around this area with that given name. If anyone could possibly help we would love to contact you!!
