check the history of the Averitt Family by Hershel Strange Averitt? there is a copy in the Cumberland County NC library on Ray Avenue. the library is temporarily closed for renovations at the moment.

Also - my grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Averitt was born in White Oak, Bladen County in 1908? (I do not have my research in front of me.) There is an Averitt cemetary on the right hand side of the road a few miles before you get to Harmony Hall. Her parents were Zachary Taylor Averitt and Frances Bertha Ezzell. One of her brothers married one of Zachary's sisters.

FYI - at one time,Cedar Creek was in Bladen County, but was later given back to Cumberland County. All of the Averitt, Averitte, Everitt, etc., families from Cedar Creek/White Oak are related.

I'm granddau of veonie Averitt Coakley, the sister to george hermis Averitt. I had an averitt reunion in Tn about 7 yrs ago and some kin came from Birmingham, AL but my mind is a blank to names at 5:30 a.m.
are you actively working on genealogy? I have our averitt line back to William and Lucinda averitt b in 1770s,from VA died in TN. not able to get back further. VA had sooo many Averitts. We still have many relatives in the area of TN they settled in about 1800.
I've posted some of our tree on ancestry that I collected at the reunion

I am also researching Averett/Averitt ancestors.
Do you have any information about Jordan Averett, born in Pitt County, NC about 1800? He married Frances "Fanny" Willoughby. He died before the 1850 census. Children Included Jordan, Mary, Elizabeth. Some think him a son of Silas Averett/Avery, but I have seen no evidence.

Ronald...Thanks for your note. Others have done more research than I...Will Averit came to my Indianapolis newspaper office after writing that book, wanted to know if we were related. Now dead, he lived in Greenwood, Ind., an Indianapolis suburb. I sent the book to my mother in California...and she didn't recognize any names...and returned it to him.

I tried e mailing people in Cornwall to double check what others have said, but could not get a reply. Being there, you may have better luck.

Just curious. Where was your mother born? My Averitt ancestors moved from North Carolina to Southern Kentucky....and current generations live all over the country. MY MOTHER WAS BORN AN AVERITT AND I AM 12TH GENERATION SINCE CHRISTOPHER AVERITT. I HAVE THE WILL AVERITT BOOK AND MET WILL AT A FAMILY REUNION WHEN I WAS RATHER YOUNG IN THE 1940'S. Dempsey Averitt (1748 -1796 in NC) probably born in Va and later moved to Cumberland Co, NC with his parents in the middle of the 18th Century - wife's name is unknown, but they had nine children: Henry, Zadoc Mills, Dempsey II, Elijah, Honor, John, Daniel, Nancy, and Mary.
Zadoc Mills(1774-) wife unknown, had a son Mills Averitt, II who married Elizabeth Culbreth, daughter of Cornelius Culbreth. Mills and Elizabeth had four children: Elizabeth who married James Faircloth, Lucy who married Archie Autry, Sarah who never married, and Robert Henry who married Nancy Sessoms.

Hi Deb, Noticed that you had also posted a message a few years back. I guess that was when my computer had crashed and I never checked this borad again. I will get out the book I have tomorrow and check for names. I will also go through some records that others have sent to me and see if your names come up. The Avritt name does seem to change depending on the generation and local. I too have it spelled different ways on different records. From what I have seen they seemed to have started out in Va and then moved on to KY, Tenn, and othe points south and south west. While I was born and raised in NYC - I had the good fortune to marry in Texas and lived in OK for a year. I live in NJ now. Nora

Hi Diane, The names you mention Clara, Tom, Walter are not familiar to me but I will check and see what I can find. It is funny many years ago I was living in Lawton, Okla and noticed Avritt's in the phone book. I called but the wife said she knew little about her husband's family name. That was before I started this search. My Great Grandfather was Thomas Gay Avritt. He lived in KY. He served in the Civil War married Julia Ann Thornton. My grandfather was James Henry Avritt born in KY died in 1901 in Evansville Ind. My Mom was Margaret Averitt/Avritt born in NYC. Her dad had died 5 months before she was born. Aside from my mom the only Avritt I meet was my grandfather's baby sister. She came to my sisters wedding. She gave me a handwritten record of her family. Most of it is accurate, some is confusing. I am also and Avritt, Diane Lynn. I am also looking for any Avritt's. My grandmother Clara was born in KY and my father was Tom Avritt...my grandfather Walter Avritt. Most Avritts that I know of are in OK and KS. I am in Oregon.
Don't know much...parents divorced when I was a baby.
So you are not alone...we just haven't found everyone.
I am always looking for family and info!

Della Eliza Averitt and sister Ruth Averitt

Texas is location.
My ggrandmother was Della Eliza Averitt. I know she had at least one sibling, a sister named Ruth.
Della died young (when my grandmother was only in 6th grade) from TB she had caught while tending to her sick mother in the cold weather.
Della married Frank Reginald Begrin. They had 3 children Evelyn QuoVadis Begrin Hill, John Richard Begrin (went by Dick), Francis Chrsitine Begrin Ras (married several times in her life).

Does anyone else have more information on my line of Averitt? I have been told we have Native American in our line and I think it comes from the Averitt side, but would like to confirm that.

I you are talking about the cemetery in Eastover, then there are alot of Averitt/Averitte family members buried there. My grandmother was an Averitte. Most of her family is buried at the cemetery in Eastover.

As always, double check anything you find in books. I'm a McAlpin descendant and according my records, Catherine McAlpin and Elijah Averett weren't married until Dec 8, 1817. She was orphaned in 1803 and there are numerous court records regarding her guardianship as she inherited a working farm and slaves.

my grandfather was roman starling, his mother was bessie mae everett/ averitt and her father was dempsey averitt b. 1856 of n.c. married to mary margaret canady b. 1867. now i think that his parents are hiram everett/ averitt b. 1826 and julia ??? b. 1830 this is all i know, can you help me?

Do you know the name of the foundry that your father worked in in Mobile? I am trying to find out about a foundry called Skates & Co. One of our Myers ancesters may have worked there sometime between 1822 and 1850. I'm trying to find out what became of that company and if there is any way to find an employee list. I realize that your father didn't work in a foundry in Mobile at the same time as my relative; but I'm trying to learn as much as I can about foundries in the Mobile area. My relative traveled from his home in Charleston, SC to work in Mobile and I find that an unusual commute at that period in history. Thanks! Gwen Myers
