The deeds to my house in Rowington show that it originally belonged to the Averns as part of "a messuage (i.e house and outbuildings) and
5 closes (i.e ?fields) of land" that included the Malt House and, at that time, a windmill adjacent to it.
My cottage and a small part of this land was sold by Thomas Avern and Mary Ann his wife on 1st December 1817 to William Gardner.
Prior to this, I have other references to Averns owning this land:
10th Oct 1745 Joseph Avern and Sarah his wife
15th Jan 1750 Let to Joseph Avern
18th Jan 1775 William Avern left the land to Thomas Avern in his will
15th Aug 1792 Let to Thomas Avern the younger
2nd Nov 1815 Reference to "Mary Avern widow and relict of the late Thomas Avern intestate deceased"
1th Feb 1817 Reference to "Mary Avern widow, Thomas Avern and Mary Ann his wife" - so presumably Mary was married to Thomas the elder and his son, also Thomas,
married Mary Ann - confusing!
