I see this message is about eight years old so I don't know if I am a bit late for this conversation! Before I married my surname was Barris. My late father was called John Barris. His father was Jose the son of Arturo Barris. Jose married Marguerite Avern. They were the son and daughter of the two partners Barris and Avern who owned the cork merchants in Silves in Portugal. My father also told me that the owned cork trees in Portugal and Morocco. He also shied me photos of the cork factory in Palafrugel. This is all I know about this side of my family,

John William Ryland only ever did the 2 books both about Rowington one in 1800 odd the other 1920ish
they are quite rare. If you would like, and send me your email address i can copy the relevant pages to you. Or if you are not happy with that I know the Rowington Historical Society has at least one of them

AVENT/AVANCE and Variants Surname DNA Project

Inviting all surname variants to become involved in the Avent/Avance Y-DNA Group Study.

If you are unfamiliar with Y-DNA Genetic Genealogy, it is based on the biological fact that a man's Y Chromosome is passed down intact from fathers to sons, generation after generation, with only occasional mutations. Therefore men who share a common paternal-line ancestor will have identical or highly similar Y-DNA Markers.

Family Tree DNA is currently offering their tests at deeply discounted prices, which is allowing many to get involved who were not able to before. But the discounted prices are only in effect through August 2008.

We have created a Surname Group Project for the Avent/Avance surnames, which includes the variants: Avents, Aven, Avens, Avants, Avan, and possibly even some with the surname Evans.

Due to the nature of these studies, the more who are involved, the more conclusions can be drawn from the data.

To join the project, please come to our Surname Group Page at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/avance

and follow the link in the upper left that says "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP"

But act quickly, because the discounted prices are only good through the end of August.
Marjorie,
I have started to compile my family tree. The earliest date I have found (to date) is 1788, James Avern, a Cork Cutter from Lambeth in London. If you are interested, once I have worked on it, I could send you a copy.
I know that James William Avern DOB 1827) was a "Cork Cutter, and teaveller with corks". Some of his children were born in Lambeth, and some in Southampton.

Kind Regards
Tina Avern

Hi Nick,

In any of your references for the ownership of the Malt House does it say what the relationship is between the previous owner and the new one?

The reason I ask is because Marjorie and I are still trying to place family members and think it possible that the Thomas who left it to Thomas in 1792 may be the Thomas who died in Edgbaston in 1794 and was married to Hannah Nightingale and their son Thomas was born about 1757, matching the approx birth date for "Thomas the younger".

Also, in the will of William (dated 1775, died 1776) he left two farms in tenements to his grandsons Thomas & John, but named his son Thomas as executor and his other (eldest) son Clement got the main farm. I couldn't make out that he left his son Thomas anything.

Anyways, this leads in a roundabout way to the puzzle of which set of parents belonged to Thomas b. 1772/1773 who married Mary Ann Avern and was the husband mentionned in 1817, and to figuring out how Thomas & Mary Ann were related before they married each other.

Cheers,
Teresa

Dear Jill,

I hope that this message reaches you and finds you well. I have been doing some more research into the family line and have at last found a definite link between your John Francis and our George Avern. John Francis is one of the witnesses on George's marriage certificate and George also was in St. Clement, Dundee on the 1871 census. The only way to confirm they were brothers would be who John Francis' parents were which would be on his marriage certificate to Helen Laverock, do you have that? Or know who his parents were? George's parents were John Avern and Charlotte Wright, but I believe he may have remarried later on to an Emma Matilda Avern (this bit I cannot fully confirm as yet). It would be lovely to hear from you, if you can contact me directly on my email address I will give you my telephone number so we can have a chat.

Best wishes
Eileen

Nick,

Thank you so much for the photos. Your cottage looks to be a good size. Given that when William Avern made his will in 1775 and left so much to so many descendants, I can only assume that he did fairly well. His son Clement who was left the farm and died in 1798 left the farm to his 2nd wife Mary. Clement & his 1st wife were the parents of James who married Mary Ann Burdon (Clement left sons James & Thomas the balance of his estate - I am assuming money) after the funeral expenses and his other bequests to his daughters) James & Mary Ann's daughter Rebecka who married Mark Sturley is where my line continues. From cemetery transcriptions both James [1827]& Mary Ann [1844]are buried at the Rowington cemetery, as are Clement and his 1st wife (both wives were named Mary) although Clement's headstone was partially unreadable when the transcription was done and parish records gave us the rest of the information. I did not find a cemetery record for William & Frances Gardner and do not currently have any dates for their deaths or those of their children.

Thanks again for the photos.
Teresa

I don't live in the Malt House but in a cottage built on a piece of the land that used to belong to the Malt House (and the Averns).
I just found your message regarding Averns of Rowington. I have information on the Averns who were farmers at Rowington. My great grandaunt Mary Morley married John Avern in 1891, and the family farm was eventually run & inherited by Mary's nephew, my great uncle, Phillip Morley, who was the last "family" owner of Old Field Hill Farm, Rowington. Family legend has it that the Averns had a coat of arms or family crest so am interested in finding info on that. Also information on the family, which seems to have come from Preston Bagot 2 generations prior.

Hello Teresa

Thanks you for the e-mail regarding the Averns of Rowington. My connection with them is a minor one, but if it contributes to your info that is good to know.

The decendant's chart you had posted contains more information than I had, as I have only recently discovered who Thomas Avern's family were. I am interested in Thomas because he is listed as the father of John Avern, who married Mary Morley (my great grandaunt) on June 2 1891, at St. George's, Lower Brailes, Warwickshire. They had no children, and Mary's nephew Philip John Morley (1891 to 1954) inherited the farm. My father John Bradford was named after his uncle Philip ... hence the connection.

Regarding Old Field Hill farm, I cannot confirm the facts regarding this, but the family story os that the Averns originally owned Manor Farm, Thw Woodlands, Rowington - but moved to Old Field Hill Farm which was smaller. I believe that this took place during John Avern's lifetime.

I would be interested in any other information you have on the Avern family. Supposedly my family had other connections to them, but I have no details on that as none of the family who were aware of this could remember anything specific.

Regards

Susan Morley

Thanks Teresa, a few more missing pieces of the jigsaw!

I trawled the parish records and found what I think are the christening records of "my" Thomas and Mary-Ann:

28/6/1772 Thomas, son of William Avern and Mary his wife
28/9/1793 Mary-Ann, daughter of Thomas Avern and Mary his wife

I think this makes them cousins (or possibly second cousins) the dates and large age difference tally with the later census records.

Thanks for the info that William Gardner married an Avern.

This would explain why Thomas sold him my house, built on the corner of the Malt House land, in 1817; Gardner had married his sister-in-law.

Nick

Nick,

The Avern family did seem to intermarry and as well they seemed to keep naming their children with all the same names!

Anyway, Thomas Avern who married Mary Ann Avern:
Thomas 1773 - 1852 & Mary Ann 1789-1870
Thomas' parents were Thomas 1728 - unknown and Elizabeth Abbotts unknown dates
Thomas senior's parents were William 1688-1776 and Susannah 1690-1759.

Mary Ann's parents were Thomas & Mary - so far I have no dates for them. Her siblings were Thomas 1791- and Frances 1793- who married William Gardner.

Mary Ann's father could be any number of Thomas Avern as both William and his son Clement mentionned a Thomas in their wills, while another William who died in 1811 also had a son Thomas and a grandson Thomas. We haven't figured it all out yet!

"Thomas and Mary Ann Avern (#86) were married in 1814 (he being previously married to Amey #90 died 1808) This Thomas lived at the Malt House and was miller of the Tom O The Wood Mill. Described in 1841 census as "Malster". In 1851 Thomas was 78 years and Mary Ann was 61 and their daughters Mary Ann aged 31 and Harriet aged 26 lived at home. By 1861 Thomas was dead and Mary Ann Snr farmed 14 acres with the help of her daughter, also Mary Ann."
(source Rowington cemetery fiche)

Teresa

Can you tell me if the John Avern in my listing whose wife was Mary born about 1855?

There were so many Thomas Averns that we are having trouble keeping them straight. Both the will of William Avern and William's son Clement's will mention Clement's son Thomas but we have been unable to find any kind of birth entry or anything else for him, and have to wonder if he is one of the Thomas Avern that we have without a set of parents.

There are 2 different Thomas and Mary Ann Avern headstones in the Rowington cemetery, unfortunately one has unreadable dates according to the fiche I have.

Are the other family members connected to the Avern tree all by the name of Morley or do you have other names? Where were they from, it might narrow down things a little, although the Avern family seems to have moved around quite a bit.

Teresa

Re: Averns at the Malt House in Rowington

In trying to complete the final link for my house, the 1817 Indenture I mention above says that the house was "built by the late father of Mary Ann Avern, wife of Thomas Avern". Can anyone tell me who Mary Ann's father was and when he died?

PS I've spotted a typo in my original post: "15th Jan 1750 Let to Joseph Avern" should read "15th Jan 1750 Let BY Joseph Avern to William Avern"

Nick

Averns at the Malt House in Rowington

The deeds to my house in Rowington show that it originally belonged to the Averns as part of "a messuage (i.e house and outbuildings) and
5 closes (i.e ?fields) of land" that included the Malt House and, at that time, a windmill adjacent to it.
My cottage and a small part of this land was sold by Thomas Avern and Mary Ann his wife on 1st December 1817 to William Gardner.
Prior to this, I have other references to Averns owning this land:
10th Oct 1745 Joseph Avern and Sarah his wife
15th Jan 1750 Let to Joseph Avern
18th Jan 1775 William Avern left the land to Thomas Avern in his will
15th Aug 1792 Let to Thomas Avern the younger
2nd Nov 1815 Reference to "Mary Avern widow and relict of the late Thomas Avern intestate deceased"
1th Feb 1817 Reference to "Mary Avern widow, Thomas Avern and Mary Ann his wife" - so presumably Mary was married to Thomas the elder and his son, also Thomas,
married Mary Ann - confusing!
