Louis C. Avila, 82, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012, in Alamogordo. He was born Saturday, Aug. 3, 1929, in Alamogordo to Leonardo R. and Trinidad (Chavez) Avila.
Louis proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 through 1952. He served in the Korean Conflict from 1951-1952. After his discharge from the service he worked as an airplane mechanic, retiring from civil service.
He was an active member of the community. He served as an usher and coordinator with St. Jude Catholic Church for 47-plus years. He was a member of the VFW, the Knights of Columbus and the Optimist Club for 10 years, where he served as Little League baseball commissioner with the New Mexico High School Activities Association. He was a registered football official from 1957-1975. He received his high school diploma from Alamogordo High School at age 75. He served as past chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board for the city of Alamogordo and as past president of the Alamogordo PTA council. In 1988 was appointed a selected service post based on the recommendation of then Gov. Garrey Carruthers and approved by President Ronald Reagan. He also counts among his list of accomplishments being an umpire for the American Legion Baseball League.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents; son Louis Avila Jr.; and sisters and brothers Anita Arenas, Donaciana Hill, Adelina Sandoval, Carmen Brusuelas, Maria Elena Gonzalez, Leonardo Avila, Joe Avila and Pedro Avila.
Survivors include his wife, Hortensia Avila, of the family home; daughters Alma Berntzen and husband, Reidar, of Oslo, Norway, Estella Avila, MaryHelen Swayzee and husband, Lee, and son Leo Avila, all of Alamogordo; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother Johnny Avila and wife, Oralia; sisters Priscilla Velasco and husband, Juan, of Alamogordo, and Margaret Vigil, of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be recited by Linda Villabisencio at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012, at St. Jude Parish, 1404 College Ave., Alamogordo. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. following the rosary with Father Tom Hoffman, S.J., as celebrant.
Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
The Avila family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
