My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Avis she had a child with a Henry Crouch in 1881, although she never married him. She was the widow of Henry Bristow when she had the child with Crouch and she subsequently married a John Lardant. Is this related to your query at all, if so I have more information.

Samuel Born approx 1826 his son Amos born 1861 & his son Amos born 1888.
The later Amos Richard was a decorated WW1 hero with the Machine Gun Corps.
I have information for any surviving family members.
Areas Cranbrook Ticehurst Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells.

Hullo all, I am seeking the decendants of Sarah Ann Avis of Wisbeach born 1844 child of Frances and ?, Sister to George,Hannah,John,Mary Susan,William,
The 1851 Census shows her as born in West Bilney.
Records show her as giving birth to William Henry by a James Collison in 1863, but later (1864) Married to Robert Reeson and had two more sons.

Avis - Chesham Buckinghamshire

Can anyone help me with a "stray" John Avis?
My grandmother was Amy Avis born Chesham Bucks 1889
Her father was George Avis born Chesham 1865
His father was William born Chesham 1820
Williams father was John, married to Elizabeth Holton in Chesham, but according to 1841 Census(where he is listed as aged 40) was not born in Bucks.
I still live in Chesham and know there was an Avis family here at that time from Parish Records(John & Martha) but cannot connect John to them. Any info appreciated.

Hope you don't mind me contacting you in this way, but I saw your reply to Jackie (March 2008) re Avis family on this site (I've not used the message board before so not altogether sure how it works). I've come to a dead end with my Avis ancestors and wonder if you could possibly help.
My grandmother was Amy Avis born Chesham Bucks 1889
Her father was George Avis born Chesham 1865
Georges father was William Avis born Chesham 1820
William's father was John Avis who married Elizabeth Holton in Chesham (Elizabeth had a son Robert who was born in 1819 in the workhouse just prior to their marriage - possibly John's son as he was known by the Avis surname)
According to 1841 Census John was born 1800/01 (he was a Gamekeeper) but was not born locally.
I still live in Chesham and know there were Avis's in the area from the 1600s, but cannot connect them to John.
Incidentally, I discovered some Avis information in our local Study centre last week concerning an Edward Avis (Blacksmith) and his son Edward. Apparently he bought a house called Tall Chimneys in about 1663 in Cholesbury (Bucks/Herts border) after moving from Hawridge(which is the adjoining village). This is just a couple of miles from where I live, so might investigate to see if it is still standing. Just thought that might add to your Avis file!
Anyway, any information you could give me would be geatly appreciated.

i have found out that my dad has passed away. and i would like to know if i have any relatives. i never got the chance to meet my dad. i connected a michael s. avis; to him and wondered if he might be my half brother. they all live in glendale az. i have been looking for many years and now i find out this.i would like very much to know if i have family.his mothers name was anna ruth (sigler) avis and his dad was john w. avis sr.

He was born in WV and lived in Fayette County WV where he died in 1932. He was married to Nancy Adkins and they had 9 children. His mother is Mary Avis and it is unknown if this is her maiden or married name. She is believed to be a native American kidnapped from out west. She died and was buried in Fayette county WV. Joseph's father is believed to be Avis Maroney (spelling of last name may be incorrect) - through family stories only - and he changed his name to Avis to avoid Irish discrimination. On a census Mary claims to be a widow and had 4 living children, but no records can be found on any.

The George Avis I am researching came from England to the USA in 1835 at the age of 17 or 18. I believe he was from the Dorset/ Somerset area and settled in WV.

John Avis and Margaret Hudson, with children immig. to Nelson, British Columbia from Pennsylvania, USA. I have info on Hudson line. Some info on Avis line. Margaret Hudson is dtr of George Hudson. Margaret and siblings immig abt 1884/5 to Pennsylvania. My Mary Hudson is sister to George Hudson. Willing to share info. Mary Hudson mar. William Brigham. Their son immig to Canada 1911.

Thanks for replying. However, my George Avis would too young to be married to your grandmother. At this time, I do not think there is a connection (my error) but I will keep your name on file if anything comes up. The name Ethel is not one of the sisters' names. I do know, most of the Avis in the British Columbia Vital Stats are connected. And they descent from the HUDSON line in Northumberland. If you find addition info, keep me posted. Have a good day..

Hi...I don't know what my line is where the Avis side is concerned. My grandfather was George Avis of Calgary (married to my grandmother briefly in 1907) ...He had two sisters -- one's name was Ethel. That is the sum total of all I know -- but I'd like to learn more if possible.

It has been six years, and I just saw your message.
All I know is that my grandfather was George Avis of Calgary and he had two sisters (one of whom was named Ethel)
He would have lived there around 1905-8 very roughly.
He and my grandmother were only married very briefly in 1907.

Have you traced your ancestors back toGeorge Avis (1690-1785) from Glouster County, NJ?
He came from England with his parents. His children from his marriage to Sarah Whitall moved west and spelled the name with an "E".Those children were Anne, Isabel, George and John.
The children of his marriage to Jane Angelo stayed in Glouster County and spelled the name without the "E".,
I saw a printed Avis Genealogy in the Newberry Library in Chicago.I was told by Ruth Lester of Mullica Hill, NJ, that it wasn't that accurate. The auther left out the black sheep.

A Malcom V. Downs dies in 19th year in Leesburg VA 8-22-1829. Don't know if related, per Visitor & Telegraph
A Mrs. Ruth Downes dies in Charlestown Wv 2-28-1830 per Farmers Repository 3-3-30. Don't know if related.

Also I show a second husband for Mary:
A Mary M. Avis marries Richard Shindler, 8/26/1833, in Berkeley Co. VA. by Nath. Young, Minister. James Shore also listed.

I believe both of these citations come from the Jefferson County Data CD of some years back. Also, I have more info on the Avis earlier generations.

Hi Kathy,
The name Cora Avise may run in the family. I live in Va. but am in Az. for winter so can't check my great grandfather's siblings or children. (Other than my grandfather). The name Cora is familiar but I don't know who she is. I would love any information about her and her mother and DAD. Is the spelling of Avise with the "e"? Other lines, probably not even related are spelled "Avis".
I am extremely interested in learning more about our family genealogy but I'm not able to devote much time to it this year. Anything you could forward to me would be treasured.

Hello: I have the two older Avise names you mention, Oswal and his son George. The wives are the same. Only problem, all my records are in folders in Virginia. I'm in Az for winter and don't remember the lineage. I remember back to Thomas Avise (Great, great grandfather) but there I lose the connecting names. Thomas is buried in Swedesboro, N.J.

How does one get a copy of the Jefferson Co. WV CD? My SHIRLEY-AVIS-VANCE families and descendants lived there--near Harper's Ferry, etc.

What a fascinating area & history. Last summer I visited the Handley Regional Library in Winchester VA--but had no time to see the nearby historical areas!

I believe that I am descended from Robert Avis & Ann Jarvis-- through daughter Dorcas Avis, who md. Walter Shirley Sr. Walter Sr. mentioned Dorcas' brother, Jarvis Avis in his will. (will posted on SHIRLEY genforum message board).

Would like to learn more about ancestors of Robert AVIS & wife Ann JARVIS.

Thank you for posting these records for Robert Avis! Because of the location, Jefferson Co. VA and timeframe, your Robert Avis is possibly the brother of my Dorcas AVIS who md. Walter Shirley Sr. in Calvert Co. MD and whose family was later found in Jefferson Co. VA/WV.

Her father was named Robert AVIS. Was your Robert AVIS the son of another Robert AVIS, and do these name fit in with your records.

I am off and on checking out information on various ancillary family roots. Visited Handley Regional Library this past summer, but had only a brief time as we were in-transit to another location. Hope to make it back to that region one day in the not-too-distant future, as well as Calvert Co. MD

This family definitely spelled their name with an "e". I'm happy to send you the photos if we can reasonably determine that we are talking about the same family. Do you remember any other information that would help? Do you remember where they lived? What the timeline would be for your Cora? Her parents names or her siblings names or her children's names?
