Joseph Awbrey married to Mary Shoemaker or Mary Prewitt??

When I got my genealogy from my cousin Carol Anne in 1979 [and she had done some very extensive research] she stated that Joseph Aubrey/Awberry married Mary Prewitt, 14 July 1823 in Hardin County, KY. And we have been going with this every since.
In about 1999 my mother and I went to Springfield, IL and since it was so close to Missouri and we were going to have to rent a car while we were there off to Linn Co., MO we went. This is where Joseph and Mary had settled and raised their family. We meet with Mae Couch [expert researcher for Linn and Chariton Counties in MO]. Mae has written quite a few books on the area and taken some excerpts from local information. In one book were excerpts from the local paper. In it was the obit for Joseph Aubrey and it stated that his wife was Mary Shoemaker, they had 13 children and he died on 30 June 1889 in Linneus, Linn Co., MO. As Mary Shoemaker was not the wife I had listed I wasn’t sure what to do and figured that the person who gave the information made a mistake [something we see all the time]. Mary died 12 Feb 1875, Linn Co., Missouri.
In about 2005 my cousins Jan and Bart McKee went to Lexington, KY for a work conference and of course being genealogists they did some research. I sent the Joseph and Mary Aubrey info with them in case they tired of doing their own research. They came back with copies of the marriage records for Joseph Awberry and Mary Prewitt. So again I dismissed the Mary Shoemaker and just miss information.
And everywhere you go on the internet there is a Joseph Awberry married to Mary Prewitt. So of course it is right. But there is still in the back of my mind that maybe there was a 2nd marriage and that is where the Shoemaker came from. I did a search on Ancestry.com for marriages in Missouri for a Shoemaker and found nothing. Since I am pretty sure that Joseph didn’t go out of state to have a 2nd marriage I again dismissed it as a mistake.
Come 2010 and on a trip to Salt Lake City and a visit to the Family history Library and I looked at the micro film for Hardin Co., KY marriages and I looked for something about a Shoemaker marrying anyone and found nothing but there was the records for Joseph and Mary Prewitt. So again I dismissed Mary Shoemaker.
During this time I connected with descendents of Roland Awbrey [they live about 5 miles away as the crow flies] and Kathy stated that she thought that Joseph was the son of Roland and not Samuel as we had. Something to think about.
In January 2012 I found out Fold3 had War 1812 pensions online. I knew that Joseph had applied or a pension and so went looking for it and found it. And there in black and white was Joseph stating that his wife was Mary Shoemaker and they had married in 1820 in Hardin Co., KY. I know this is my Joseph because he is in Linneus, Linn Co., Mo in the 1870’s.
I have looked in the census for another Joseph Aubrey and can’t find him. There is a rumor that there was a Joseph in St Louis MO and maybe his son in California.
My Joseph is married to Mary Shoemaker even though there is no record so far in Hardin Co. KY. But who is his father Samuel [like I have] or Roland?? Where did the other Joseph and Mary go?? Are there 2 Joseph’s married to 2 Mary’s? And how do I prove it.

Re: Kerenhappuch Awbrey, d/o John Awbrey & Hannah Tanner.

The mystery deepens.
I found info online that Kerrenhhappich Awbrey was out of a Cherokee mother and that she was born abt. 1730. Of course this birth date is wrong because the will records of John Awbrey (Kerren's father) list Karanhappuck in his 1725 will (looks like she was a minor) and that John's wife was still alive and turned in an appraisal of the estate and later married Mr. Chandler (Odd that John and Hannah had a son named Chandler??) Anyway...If Kerranhappich (or however you spell it) had a Cherokee mother then John committed adultery (a real bad thing back then) and I would think this would be in the record books (courts) or something. I was able to find info tracing John Awbrey's line back to before 1100ad online. Very complete records too.
So..though it would be "novel" to have Cherokee blood in us I would like to see more proof than one person's unsubstantiated claim.
John, Henry and Thomas Awbrey all came to VA from Wales. They were the son's of Sir William Awbrey.

Silvester Jackson b:1884 Pike, Arkansas

Does anyone have any information on this Silvester(Sylvester) Jackson. He was married to my great grandmother, Wista Hinds. They had 3 children. Then one day he left for work and disappeared forever. My mother, Juanita Jackson Awbrey, and her siblings found out that he remarried in Arkansas, had 3 more children, and moved to Texas, maybe Houston. Any info will be appreciated. His father and mother, Levi and Rebecca Jackson. He had two sisters, one of them was named Paralee Jackson. I have more kinfolk out there and I don't know who they are. I live in near Houston so I may be near some of them. Thank you and God bless. Donald G. Awbrey.

I, being an Awbrey myself, want to pose a question to any other fellow Awbrey's. Have any of you or some one in your family that you know have any certain genetic diseases? Ones that have no cure. I have two children and myself stricken with certain genetic disease(s). I will not disclose the name of these disease(s) at this time because I would like to receive geniune objective responses. I am a despirate father trying to track down the cause and possibly a cure for these disease(s). God bless. Donald Awbrey

This may or may not be important to you. The Kerehappuch Crafton you mention was a resident of Charlotte County, Virginia at the time of her husband's death in the late Eighteenth Century. I am a descendant of Samuel Awbrey who died in 1768 in Charlotte County. He was born in Prince William County, and removed to South Carolina in the 1750s where he married and had children. I have always wondered what he was doing in Charlotte County when he died. There appear to have been no other Awbreys in Charlotte County, except possibly Kerenhappuch Crafton, who, if she is the daughter of John Awbrey, Jr., would have been his first cousin.

Does anyone have a copy of or a full transcription of the Will of John Awbrey, dated 1726 in Westmoreland County, Virginia? The will mentions daughters Hannah & Kerrenhappuck, daughter Keziah Attwell and son Chandler Awbrey.

I'm trying to determine if Kerrenhappuck was the same lady who married James Crafton, Sr. about 1734 in King William County, Virginia.

Thank you!
Juli

I'm looking for information about John AWBREY, b. ca. 1680 and d. 26 February 1745/46 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was married ca. 1709 to Hannah TANNER (d/o Thomas Tanner & Mary ATWELL.). Their children were Elizabeth (b. ca. 1710), Chandler (b. ca. 1711), Hannah (b. ca. 1713), Kerenhappuch (b. ca. 1717) and Jemimah (b. ca. 1725). John's will also mentions a daughter Keziah Atwell who was not of age in 1745/46.

Joann Crafton sent me some wonderful information on this family that suggests that Kerenhappuch Awbrey is the same Kerenhappuch who married James CRAFTON in King William County, Virginia in 1734.

Does anyone else have anything further on this family? I would love to be able to definitively place my Kerenhappuch Crafton in this Awbrey family.

Thanks!
Juli

I have no information concerning Kerenhappuch Awbrey's marriage, but I do have some questions and comments about her father's family. According to "Wills of Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1654-1800" by Fothergill, page 87, John Awbrey, father of Hannah, Keziah, Kerrenhappuck, and Chandler, signed his will on 19 Dec 1726, and it was probated on the following 22 Feb. I wonder where you found the 26 Feb 1745/46 death date. I have the birth years of the children as: Elizabeth c1709, Chandler c1711, Hannah c1713, Jemimah bef 1716, Kerrenhappuck c1717, and Keziah unknown. These are all similiar to the dates you have except for Jemimah. I found all these dates on the internet and have no primary source for any of them. I wonder if you would share your sources for you information concerning this family, including John's parents and his son Chandler and his family? Posting a reply on this message board, or sending me an e-mail would be fine. Thanks and good hunting.
Darrell Dunlop

I'm searching for my husband's great grandparents who are buried in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co, Il. They're the "oldest" relatives his aunt, Thelma May Awbrey Shoemaker, 89 yrs old, of Indianapolis, knows of. My husband's mother was Thelma's only sibling, Alma Louise Awbrey Burries Barr, who is buried in Indianapolis.

His ggrandfather was Jonathan Awbrey, a minister. We think he was born abt 1845-1870 and was married abt 1885. Cordelia Sherman Awbrey, his wife, was born 6/18/1865 and died 7/13/1951. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter (she may have been killed in a race riot in E'ville.)

One of their sons, Raleigh William, b. 3/15/1890, d.8/6/1967 was married to Viola Davis, b. 1895, d. 1953. They were Thelma and Alma's parents. They're buried in I'polis.

The other children were Wilbur (b 1922, d. 1992); Viola, b. 1890, d. 1972; Gertrude, b. 1907, d. 1987; Shirley, b. 1905, d. 1985. (The 3 women apparently lived in Evansville, Wilbur lived in Pike, IN.) Eldred (was a minister)--had 1 son and 1 daughter; Merrill D.was the other son--no dates.

Did any of your Awbrey/Aubreys come from Indiana, or go to IN? We've been told the Awbrey/Aubreys originally came from England but haven't gotten far enough along with this line to even think of checking on that!

Good luck with your search. Let me know if anything I've shared with you "fits" with any of your present information.

Thanks.

Raleigh Awbrey/Aubrey b. 1890

Apparently my original requests (in 2001) "collapsed".

I'm looking for information on Jonathan Awbrey, of Evansville, IN. He is said to have been a minister and was married to Cordelia L. Sherman. (Her dates were 6/18/1865 to 7/13/1951). Both of them are buried in Evansville, IN.
Their son, Raleigh William (Awbrey then spelled as Aubrey), was my husband's grandfather. (He was born 3/15/1890; died, 8/6/1967.) He married Viola Lee Davis. Her dates were: born, 1895, died, 1953. Both are buried in Indianapolis, IN, in Washington Park East Cemetery. Does anyone know anything about these folks? --I hope to hear from some of you, soon!
Thanks!

Our KY Awbrey was named Jonathan Gore Awbrey. He was born in 1855 in KY (don't know where). He died on Dec. 9, 1914, in Evansville, IN.
He married Cordelia Sherman Leach, who was born June 18, 1865, in IN, and died on July 13, 1951, in Indianapolis, IN.
This couple were my husband's great grandparents.
One of their sons, Raleigh W. Awbrey was born March 15, 1890, in IN (we think), and died Aug 6, 1967, in Eton, IN.
His wife was Viola Lee Davis, born 1895 in IN (we think) and died Jan 16, 1953, in Indianapolis, IN. This couple had 2 daughters, Alma Louise (b. Nov 3, 1912, East St. Louis, IL, and died 1982, Indianapolis, IN. She married Marion Arthur Burries and they had one son, my husband, William Denman Burries. Arthur's dates were b.1909, Franklin, IN, d. 1955, Indianapolis, IN. The other daughter, Thelma, married John Shoemaker. They had no children. He died about 7 years ago and she 2 years ago, at 91.

Thanks for the information on your Awbrey line.I hope we can locate a common ancestor among all our Awbrey info!

Do you think your fellow could be our Jonathan Awbrey's father? Perhaps he's our guy's grandfather? William would have been 55 when Jonathan was born. Of course, that's not too unusual, I don't guess.

William Awbrey, was a latter son of Henry Awbrey, Henry was from Loudoun County VA. They moved to Athens KY, which located SE of Lexington KY. William Awbrey had a son John and his sons, some of them moved into Indiana. The only location's I have of these Awbrey's are in Hendricks, Putnam, Marion, and Switzerland County's. I found some info on some Awbrey 's but i don't know their origins. I'm looking at this line right now, I could send you some reports if I can.

---Cole Aubrey

What are William's dates? Do you know where he came from, or where his parents came from when they came to Virginia?
Our "oldest" Awbrey was born in KY and moved to IN where he married, lived, died and was buried. My husband's mother was an Awbrey/Aubrey, from Evansville, IN.
I haven't been able to locate anything about the parents, etc. of our "oldest" Awbrey.
Any information you have that might shed some light on our research will certainly be appreciated!
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.
Mary B.
