Hi James,

I am Allan Awtrey descended from Henry Green Awtrey. William Newport and Henry Green moved their families to Ringling, Oklahoma after residing in Mineral Wells, Texas and Nocona, Texas. Some of Henry Green's relatives (J.C. Awtrey)still reside in Ringling, Oklahoma. I am in contact with Betty Awtrey White also. My email address is aawtrey@gmail.com.

Respectfully,
Allan Awtrey

Which Absalom do you have proven to be a son of Cornelius Awtrey/Autry? And what is the source of that proof? Do you mean Cornelius was born in 1735 or an Abslaom was?
I would love to see some additional evidence about the purported children of Cornelius Awtrey.
Thanks!
Myra

We have been researching some of the Awtrey family, and have found an intersect with my husband's and my families. Henry Sanford, son of William Elbert, who is a brother to my husband's gr.gr.grandfather Greenberry Awtry, moved to Montgomery County, Arkansas between 1860 and 1870 from Fayette Co., AL with his first wife and their family, including a daughter, Lorinda Authusia Awtry, b. 1858 in AL. Henry Sanford was born 22 Jul 1830 in GA, died 3 Oct 1914 in Montgomery Co., AR. He is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Caddo Gap, Montgomery Co., AR as are his daughter, Lorinda, and first wife, Margaret Phillips Awtry (also known as Jemima) 1839-1877. He married Lucretia Mildred Reese Barnes after his first wife's death. His daughter Lorinda married my gr.grandfather, Owen McAfee Bates, and they had 3 children before her death, and he married my gr.grandmother. That makes Owen McAfee and Lorinda's ancestors related to both my husband and I. That is as far as we have gotten with the descendants of William Elbert Awtrey since we just discovered that connection very recently.

I have finally posted my Awtrey Goldsmith tree on Ancestry. This will give you information on the Awtreys. I just returned from an Awtrey get-together and your aunts, Peggy & Bobbie were there. Also many of the children of Haskell's brothers & sisters. Hope this helps you!
Betty Awtrey White

Thank you for the additional information. Sorry about mixing up the names -- I should never type after 8 p.m. Temperance Awtrey and William Bankston had a son James J. Bankston, born 11 March 1815, but evidently he never married. He is found as a single man living with his parents in 1850 Walton County, GA and in 1860 Clark County, Arkansas where that family removed to. I have not found him after 1860 and suspect he may have died during the Civil War. I have no indication that any of this family ever went to the Gulf Coast communities where you've found your Bankstons. I have both Awtrey and Bankston lines and have been working on untangling them. There are a number of Bankston lines in Louisiana and Mississippi and if you can find your family in 1870 and 1860 censuses, perhaps I or others can pinpoint the lineage for you. The county/parish/state is critical to untangling these families as like in most families there are many names that are the same or almost the same in several generations.
--Myra

From gormleym/bankston/d352.htm I have a JAMES J BANKSTON(b 1815) son of Temperance Awtrey, not a Joseph Bankston son of Temperance. I have Joseph Bankston(b 1841) , son of James J Bankston and Miss Jackson (m 8/29/1866). This info came from Book 1, page 54, act178, father of the groom James J Bankston, mother Miss Jackson, Witness of the bride, John Bordages and Manuel Muniz. Sorry I did not write the source, probably marriage records in Mississippi or Georgia. I will research this further. Thanks

I do not have a marriage record for Joseph Bankston, the son of Temperance Awtrey and William Bankston and have "lost" him between 1861 and 1870. Perhaps he was killed during the Civil War? He was still a single man living with his parents in 1850 in Walton County, Georgia and in 1860 in Clark County, Arkansas. I have no record of him being in Mississippi.
Do you know when (approximately) and where (county/state) that Andresine Bordages was married? That information would be most helpful.
Have you checked any census records?

Seeking current information on James J Bankston(b 1815) son of William Bankston and Temperance Awtrey. Do you have anything indicating that Joseph Bankston (b 1841) is the son of James J Bankston. Joseph Bankston's spouse was Andresine M Bordages(b 1849). Thanks for any information you have. I have been searching for this connection for
several years. Joseph and Andresine were my great-grandparents and this is my missing link to Anders Bankston (b 1640).

The info I have is that our Sarah Axeline Awtrey was born in 1861 and married somewhere in Alabama in 1879. The only record that I have found on William Eldridge Awtrey is on the LDS site and shows him as being born in Alabama, but no date. He married Martha Ann Ramsey, born 1842, in Tuscaloosa Co., AL, on Jan. 22, 1860, in Tuscaloosa, and their children are shown as: Sarah Exaline, Elbert T., William B., Hennerly, Martha, Alice, and David, the last one born in 1875, one year before his father's death.

There was a William E. Awtrey, I do not know if E. stands for Eldridge or Elbert. He was born in 1845 and is the youngest son of Elbert Awtrey. I heard Elbert's full name was William Elbert. Elbert was married to Sibbey or Libby. Elbert had a brother named Eldridge so it is not far fatched that William Elbert Awtrey named his son William Eldridge Awtrey.

Elbert and his wife and Family moved along with the Rowland family from Cass county Georgia to Fayette County Alabama.
I hope this helps. The move occured about 1859.

We are trying to tie William Eldridge Awtrey, who we are told died in Phillips County, AR in 1876, who is my husband's gr. grandfather through his daughter, Sarah Exaline Awtrey, to his ancestors. We can find the names William and Eldridge in Isaac's family, but haven't found one named William Eldridge.
FYI:
Source:
Newspaper article printed in The Atlanta Journal, evidently some time in 1907:

Headline: "Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell, Aged 95, Living Near Atlanta, Has a Most Remarkable Family of Descendants"
"(Special Dispatch to The Journal) MORROW, GA, April 6 - There is now living in 13 miles of Atlanta GA. on the McDonough road, Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell, formerly Miss Elizabeth Ruff, who was born on the 31st day of August 1812. She married Mr. Thomas Mitchell when she was about 18 years old. They had born to them 15 children 13 of them reared to be grown. Two of them died in infancy. She is living now on the same place she and her husband settled about 75 years ago.
She still has living the following children: Mrs. Mary A. Wiggins of Rex, GA; Mrs. Elizabeth Autrey of Atlanta, GA; Mrs. Miriah Jones of Alabama, Mr. William R.R. Mitchell of Morrow, GA; Mr. Thomas H. Mitchell of Morrow, GA; Mr. Martin L., Mitchell of Texas; Mrs. Elmina Burks of Cass County Texas; Mrs. Georgia A. Cates of Cass County Texas. She has 78 grandchildren, 180 great grandchildren and 40 great-great grandchildren. Add her own 15 children to the number, gives a total of 313 in all.
Her sons who were old enough were in the war.
And all of her male descendants living in Georgia were strong for Hoke Smith for governor last year.
It is certainly a remarkable family and she is still in good health and bids fair to stay many years yet."

(Five small pictures accompanying the article are identified as follows)
Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell, the mother
Mr. Thomas H. Mitchell, her son
Emory P. Mitchell, grandson
Master John Grades Stephens, great-grandson
Miss Iris Blackwell, great-granddaughter

Hello Myra,

I don't know of a family Bible.

But Beulah Ollie Awtrey is my Great-Grand-Mother. My Grand-Mother (who is still with us and VERY clear minded) verified that Elijah Newton AWTREY and Elizabeth Young Mitchell were her grand-parents. Beulah Ollie Awtrey also had a twin Sister named Rollie that died young. There is a nice Lady named Betty Brown Johnson who I lost contact with that wrote a book called "Come Climb My Tree" Volume IV The Thomas Mitchell Family 1700's - 1997 From England to Georgia.

She also lists G.W. Coker (now I know G = George. ty) as Beulah's first husband. She did not list an Elisha in her children, I only know of the Awtrey Kids (11 of them).

I would LOVE to trade any info/Pictures you have.

here are pictures of their gravesites:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sm...;

AHi Pat -- Nice to see you. I am most interested in your Beulah Ollie AWTREY (1882-1969) who married Lee Calhoun SMITH. Since she was born after the 1880 census and evidently was married by 1900, she is one of the children I have missed. I'm always delighted to find what I called "missing daughters"! I have 11 children for Elijah Newton Awtrey and Elizabeth Young Mitchell (from censuses). I believe Elizabeth was married first to George W> Coker who died during the Civil War and I believe that her son, Elisha (born ca 1862) is actually a Coker rather than an Awtrey, but I have not found Elizabeth and Elijah Newton's married record yet -- I believe they married about 1865 and probably in Clayton or Fulton county, GA.
How did you learn that Beulah Ollie Awtrey was the daughter of Elijah Newton Awtrey and Elizabeth Young Mitchell? Is there a family Bible?

Elijah Newtwon Awtrey (1843-1929) was the son of Eldridge Awtrey and Margaret "Peggy" George and I have some information on their lines, if you're interested.
Happy to share.
--Myra

I just found Rootsweb and the Surname Mailing lists and thought I'd introduce myself.

I am in the process of looking up some of my Awtrey ancestors and saw that they spelled it a multitude of different ways.

My Great Grandmother is my Awtrey connection.

Isaac Awtrey (there are various spellings of names as there are no rules about how to spell one's name) was born 5 December 1775 (family Bible) and died 10 September 1842 (family Bible) and is buried in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County, Georgia. He married Araminta Bankston (also buried in the same place in 1861).
Their eldest child was William Elbert Awtrey, born 1801 in Georgia and who died after 1870, probably in Fayette County, Alabama. Elbert, as he was called, married Sibey or Libby [--?--] whose maiden name I do not have. They evidently married about 1829, perhaps in Henry County, Georgia. Siblings of William Elbert Awtrey were:
Greenberry, born 1803; Eldridge, born 20 March 1805; William A., born 11 Jan. 1808; Lucy, born 13 Jan. 1810; Nancy, born 6 Jan. 1812; Annis (female), born 10 March 1814; Mary Ann, born 20 May 1816; and Elizabeth, born 7 Sep. 1818.
Happy to exchange information.

Elbert was born about 1801, when was Eldridge born? If so Isaac spelled his last name Awtry and was born in NC Dec 5, 1776. and is buried in DeKalb County Georgia in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetary. What do you think?

It's three or four years :) so I dropped in.

I haven't looked at this in a while. However, my records are to Eldridge at best. I can only speak to Eula Mae Pace's photographs leading into Martin Eldridge's lineage with any absolute authority.

Myra, by far, has always had the best info before then. The Isaac's and Absalom's are definitely a confusing element. I can not overstate what may have been confused and lost at Mitchell's Plantation, after the civil war. If you want to dig for assurance someone needs to look there.

Wish you well in your search

Clyde

Myra-
I'm sorry I placed the incorrect date. I'm very new at this. I have no other information except James J Bankston was married to ------Jackson. They had one son Joseph Bankston (b 1841) married to Andresine M Bordages(B 1849).
They had two children Marie J Bankston (b1867) married to Thomas Fayard(b 1857). This seems to be the same Marie Bankston in this original posting. Their second child, Joseph A(Andrew) Bankston (b 1725), married to Albertine Saucier(b 1872). These were my grandparents and they had 8 children. I am trying to determine if the above James J Bankston could possibly be the son of Temperance Awtrey and William Bankston. I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks Alice Bankston

Have not located him after the 1860 census when he is with his parents in Clark County, Arkansas.
There are a number of James Bankstons, so any additional clues are helpful to enable researchers to determine the likely person of interest.
--Myra

The Absalom Awtrey who was born 7 June 1750 "on the Tar River" in [Gastonia, Anson County] North Carolina [source: his Revolutionary War pension application of 1832, which was filed in Henry County, Georgia) is the one who died in Henry County, Georgia in March 1833 and had the son, Isaac Awtrey (who married Araminta Bankston in 1800). This Absalom lised his places of residency as: Lincoln County, NC, South Carolina, Greene County, GA, Jackson County, GA [the area later Clarke County and still later Oconee County] and then Henry County, GA, where he died.

I also have found an Absalom Awtrey on tax lists of Morgan County, GA for the years 1823, 1824, 1826, 1827, 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, and suspect it is the same Absalom. And, he probably is the same man who owned property in Wilkes County, GA at one time and the one who drew land in Lee County, GA in 1827. He served also as a spy, 3rd division under Brig. Gen. Clarke (Fort Clarke, GA) cin 1793/94.

The Absalom Awtrey who died in 1827 St. Clair County, Alabama, purportedly the son of a Cornelius Awtrey (Autry), and supposedly born in 1731 in North Carolina is a different man. The two have often been confused.

As to whether a Cornelius Awtrey, of NC, is the immigrant, has not been proven to my satisfaction. The father of Absalom Awtrey (1750-1833) has not been proven.

Isaac Awtrey (the son of the Absalom Awtrey who died in 1833 in Henry Conty, GA) married Araminta Bankston in 1800 and their Bible record has survived and I have a scanned copy of it. Isaac and Araminta are buried in Macedonia Baptist Cemetery, DeKalb County, GA. That information is now online at: http://www.dekalbhistory.org/
According to that cemetery record, Isaac was born 5 Dec. 1775 and died 10 Sept. 1842. Araminta (born 17 Feb. 1782 GA) survived him by many years and died 9 May 1861 in DeKalb County, GA.

The Awtrey/Autry surname is spelled variously in the records.

--Myra Vanderpool Gormley

Evidently John "Baptist" Awtrey was born ca 1780 and died about 1839.

As to the identity of the Jacob Awtrey of Walton County, GA, it would be helpful to know his age.
Henry S. Awtrey (1830-1914) and Isaac Newton Awtrey (1834-1901) were sons of William "Elbert" AWTREY and Sibey/Libey [---?--]. That family removed to Fayette County, Alabama from Georgia. I belive some of their children removed to Arkansas later.

William Elbert AWTREY was the son of Absalom AWTREY (1775-1842) and Lucy CAMP.

Relationships among the various AWTREYs in early (pre-Revolutionary War time) Georgia, particularly in Greene County area, have not been determined to my knowledge. These included: Jacob, Absalom, John, Alexander and Simon. The parents of Absalom Awtrey (1775-1842) have not been determined yet either as far as I know.
I have a Jacob in Green County GA having land dealings with Absalom and Isaac Awtrey but do not know the connection there. However Henry Sanford Awtrey (brother of Isaac Newton Awtrey) had children one named Isaac and another named Elizabeth and his brother Isaac was married to an Elizabeth. Henry was Absalom's grandson not Son. So Isaac that married Elizabeth would also be Absalom's grandson. Or if they are Henry's children then they would not be married but you could still find an Isaac with an Elizabeth in the same household with the same last name. This could look to be married though they were brother and sister, at least to an unknowing census taker it could.

Isaac Awtrey had bought and sold land in Henry County GAbetween 1824 and 1842. And in 1834 Isaac was named administrator of Absalom's estate. Isaac was also guardian of minor children John, Sarah, Isaac and George Wahington Awtery. I hear he also had dealings earlier with Jacob between 1819 and 1824. Do you know who Jacob is? This would be in Walton County, GA.

Well as you say every three to four years... so here I am responding to you.

You are correct and incorrect also. First off Isaac's wife's name is Arminta Bankston, her father was Jacob Bankston and her mom was Jamima.

Isaac's father was Absalom Autrey born in 1750 married before 1770 and died Mar 1833 St. Clair County AL.Absalom was born in Edgecombe County NC. Absalom was a Tory officer in NC. There were three Absalom Autreys serving in the American Revolution and one was born in 1750 serving in the Army in 1782 and applied for a pension in Henry County, TN in 1832. this Absalom served as a First LT. in the British Army in Col. David Fannings Regiment from 1 Mar 1781 to 30 Sept 1782. He moved to Moore, Buncombe and Rutherford Counties before moving to AL. He is the only Absalom Autrey with NC colonial records. Absalom was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church in 1797 Oconee County, Fromerly, Clarke County , GA. Absalom married a MARY LUCY Naomi Camp( family tradition says) not Lucy Camp. She was born 1759 and died before 1800.

Cornelius Autry is Absalom's dad. An immigrant bn. in 1735. In 1756 He received a land grant in Edgecombe county NC of 650 acres in the Province of NC from East Granville, Aplantation on both sides of Autrey Creek Land grant #37, 21 May 1757. In Dec 1757 an additional 480 acre tract was surveyed for Cornelius. Land grants followed of 700 acres, 700 acres, 687 acres, 340 acres. I believe totals 3587 acres.

I hope this helps. What can you share with me?
If you will provide some dates (approximate ones are OK) and some places where your family lived, died and/or were married it would enable those of us with AWTREY/AUTRY lines to help you. It is really helpful when the counties/states are included as that is how most of us record information about our American lines. Cities/towns are OK, but the county is the source of most of our genealogical records.
Be glad to help, if I can.
I am incontact with my Great Aunt Betty Awtrey White who is going to send me some sheets on this line. I was just wondering if anyone has a William Newport Awtrey in their tree that might connect. Possible spouse - Maudie Autry

Per my previous post. Eula Mae's rrecords are from Photographic, writings on the back of the photographs, and her verbal history.

Martin Eldridge's history is from my personal history (I sat in every lap named) and is now generally part of public record. There are now at least 3 great great great grandsons named Awtrey.

Clyde Awtrey

Richard,

Nothing like checking in every couple of three or four years LOL. Somewhere in this thread I noted that it ts very difficult to determine absolutely Newton Elijah';s ancestory.

Basicly they Newton Elijah and Elizabeth lived on Thomas Mitchell's plantation after the war. It is uncertain (as near as I can tell) if they were orphans or part of a big family unit. Elizabeth is adopted by some records.

However, because my great grandfather was named Martin 'Eldridge' and Every first son forever in our family has the grandfather's name as a middle name it is reasonable to assume -

He was the son of Eldridge(1810-c1865) and Margaret(b 1813) Awtrey. Eldridge was the son of Isaac Awtrey( (married to Aramento) who was the son of "an' Absolom Awtrey ((1749-1833) known buried in Henry County GA, and "known" married to Lucy Camp. Now who this 'Absolom' is I can't figure out. His relationship with Cornelius founder of Autryville, NC. I'm 'guessing,' he was a nephew as the "Absolom son of Cornelius' has different documented Born Died dates, and probably is the one burried in Alabama. and not Henry cty GA.
I believe there is some history of the d'Autry's in France in Cornelius's lineage.

Oooor - Newton Elijah could have been a civil war orphan, roomed with the Awtreys at Thomas Mitchell's home and we have forever lost his lineage after the war adoption. A VERY REAL possibility when trying to span the Civil War period in the south. Any aswers would be at Thomas Mitchell's Plantation.

Clyde Awtrey
