I understand that it was fairly common for Swedes to change their last names in the old country. Since last names were typically derived from the first names of one's parents, there were many Axelssons (sons of Axel), and there may not have been much sentimental attachment to the last name. It was common to change one's name to a place name on came from. So I speculate that your ancestor might have changed his name to Milton if there was a place named Milton in his history, or even possibly because he was fond of the poet.
