Re: Axon Family - Stockport / Heaton Norris.

I was primarily interested in the Wilks/Sykes family.

They primarily lived in or near Love Lane, Heaton Norris and attended and were baptized and buried at Christchurch Heaton Norris, Stockport - Lancashire as it is North of the River Mersey. (Parts of Stockport on the North side of the river are in Lancashire).

Mary Wilks (Father was Isaac Wilks a Master Plasterer) married Thomas Sykes and had children. Thomas Sykes travelled to US or Canada by himself and on returning he drowned when his ship sank off Prince Edward Island.

His widow Mary Sykes in Stockport then married Robert Charles Axon but on the 1891 census of Stockport the children were still called Sykes or we would not have found them.

The Wilks family were all plasterers and Thomas Sykes worked as a plasterer too, probably employed by them.

Robert Charles Axon was into selling building items.

A business called Axon was still in business selling building supplies in the Stockport area and had a web site a few years ago - I have not checked recently but they are probably still there,

If your Isaac was in this sort of business he is probably connected but it is the Sykes and Wilks we were really interested in. I have some trees on Ancestry.com

If you do a search in Public Family Trees for Mary Wilks born abt 1849 Heaton Norris - try both Lancashire and Cheshire you will find my tree

A Lot of People's family tree

I am not related to this family. I did a lot of research in the Heaton Norris / Stockport area for someone connected and decided not to waste that information and put a tree on Ancestry for anyone connected. This tree then found an Australian link and then another link in another part of Australia.

Remember Mary was surnamed Sykes when she married Robert Charles Axon.

Hope this helps you and anyone else researching this family.

Kath

I notice an Isaac AXON b abt 1817 Heaton Norris, who has with him his unmarried sister Ann (b abt 1822 Romiley) at the time of the 1871 census. Parents of both and several others were probably Thomas AXON (1795-1876) and his first wife Sarah CLAYTON (1797-1844).

I'm interested in the Claytons more than the Axons but would be pleased to share information.

Well, this is a message nine years after your's!!
I have my mother's parental side traced back to Tiverton Devon. It is Axon and the family were butchers who moved up north to Romford in Essex where the various branches did well. My grandfather was Horace Axon.
I go back to roughly 1780 ish, though my site is not before me as I write, it could be earlier. I suppose it will be necessary to travel to Tiverton at some point and look more carefully. But perhaps by now you have done some further homework and may well now have overtaken me, if so I will be interested in your findings.
Thankyou,
Angela Kilmartin / Mendham, / Axon
I have made contact with descendants of Eliza and of course have all the family of Hiram and Mary Betsey accounted for. Do you have any family before William and Alice ? Depending on what info you'd like I will send it to you at your email address. Liz.

I have only recently started researching my family tree and have found 3 Samuel Axon's from Withington, but whether they are yours I don't know! They are as follows:

Samuel Axon (b~1774) married Elizabeth Burr 1799, died sometime between 1841 & 1851. Living at Cross Hill, Withington in the 1841 census. 5 known children:

1. Mary Ann (b~1804)
2. Samuel (b~1810) married Elizabeth Burrows ~ 1845, 3 children - Ellen (~1836), Hannah (b~1845) (married George Ditchfield), Samuel (b~1851)
3. William (b~1818)
4. Joseph (b~1820)
5. Ann (b~1823) married (1) James Chorlton, 3 children - Elizabeth (b~1848), William (b~1849), John (b~1855), (2) John Galley.

Apart from this my knowledge of the family is pretty sketchy, I would appreciate any additional info if you can help.

Kathy,
I know from a previous post that you were interested in a Ellis Axon married to a Nellie Collins (in Rhode Island). I found out recently that my uncle, Clifford Lamourine, was a half brother to Nellie Collins. I have been trying to figure out about Ellis Axon and his family for a little while now and wondered if you have had any success since 2001. Just taking a chance that you have the same e-mail address as back then. Will share what limited info I have. How are you related to Ellis?
Susan

Josiah and Ellis AXON from Providence, RI

Am trying to locate anyone familiar with this family. Josiah and Ellen Axon living in Providence, RI during the 1890's to 1930's, at least. ELLIS AXON married NELLIE COLLINS, my uncle's half sister, and I am trying to find out more about Ellis and his family. Nellie and Ellis had two sons that I know of - Frank Henry born in 1907 and Cornelius, born in 1910 in Providence. Nellie died while the children were still young; don't know what happened to Ellis. Do know that Ellis had a brother named William and a sister named Lillian, plus a lot of siblings who died young. Any knowledge about this family would be appreciated.
Susan

I am trying to trace information on William Albert Axon who was married to Mary Ann Wilson. Also their daughter Charlotte born 1868,I have found her in 1871 census when she was 3...there is no other record for her but she was married to Richard Howell when she was 17, then there is no record of her until she reappears in 1901 census with Arthur Harrison as her husband and 10 Children.
Charlotte died in 1908 in Scotland but I need to fill in these missing years
Thanks Chris

I am descended from Sarah Axon b.abt 1832 in Heaton Norris,Stockport,Lancashire, England. She married Abraham Bardsley on 30th Oct 1853 in the Chapel of St Thomas in Heaton Norris, Stockport. They had children: John b.1857; Harriet b.abt1863; George b.abt 1865; Robert b.abt 1873 & William b 1875(who is my ancestor). The Axon's seem to have been in Lancashire & Cheshire, England for a very long time, so it might be worthwhile looking up records there, eg the IGI etc. Hope to hear from you even if we don't turn out to be related! My Dad, grew up in Manhattan, and besides his immediate family, ie.his sister and brothers
and a few other relatives, I don't know much else, because half of his family doesn't speak to each other.
I think that he has some relatives on the Island, but I have never met them. I also thought it was cool that there
were other people with the same last name that I may not even be related to.(especially since it isn't a very common name)

Amanda
My Grandmother ,Maybelle Axon,b. 8 May 1908./d. 11 Dec. 1982.She had sisters named Drucila,a Ida Mae .May have been more of them, but this is all I have knowledge of at the moment. All lived and are buried in Bamberg.SC U.S.A.After June of 2000's Reunion I will have more info. I hope.
Perhaps we shall eventually find we are related,as I find the Axon name as most uncommon ,other than our known relatives. This is most exciting! :) We search and share and find our blood yearns to be reuninted with its kindred spirits.Family! What other than our GOD could be of more importance than Family. So lets perservier!
Keith of Bamber,SC
U.S.A.
