Mary Aydelott McDowell, Nelson County Kentucky

Need to verify information about the parents of Mary Aydelott McDowell. I believe them to be George H. Aydelott and Christian Brittingham Hill Aydelott Hobbs from Sussex MD>Nelson County KY. Mary McDowell is named as one of the children in both the wills of George & Chrisian. If I am correct, she married John McDowell in 1800 in Nelson County, and they had 6 children. I can only account for 4 of them: Christian A. "Kitty", James K., Margaret H., and my 2nd great grandmother Mary H. I have copies of marriage licenses/surety bonds for all three daughters. John McDowell signed two of them, and Mary H.'s mother, Mary, signed hers leading me to believe the John McDowell was no longer living in 1833. All three daughters married Crutcher brothers in Hardin County, KY. I have been unable to prove that the Mary signing the permission for Mary H.'s marriage to Stephen Wayne Crutcher is Mary Aydelott. Can anyone help??

Aydelott Surname DNA Project

There is now a Surname DNA Project for the surname AYDELOTT, and any variant spellings of the name. Recent research has raised the question of possible separate family lines of Aydelotts in America. The only way to be sure is DNA testing.

This Surname project is for males only, as the Y-DNA is carried only by the males of the family. Ladies, maybe your father, brother, or a male cousin would be willing to participate on your behalf.

If you would like to participate, please go to https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=AYDELOTT and join.

Feel free to contact me with any questions - ayholtin@gmail.com

Mary Aydelott, dau of Benjamin Aydelott, wife of John Blizard

In retracing Mary (Aydelott) Blizard, I was looking for documentation that she had married Richard Lockwood after the death of John Blizard. The earliest record I found stating this union was pubished 1889 in the book Descendants of Robert Lockwood, History of the Lockwood Family in America by Frederic A. Holden and E. Dunbar Lockwood. This book is well known to have accepted material without verification. No doubt, a descendant of Richard Lockwood had submitted this data. How they came to this conclusion, is lost to history. There is no marriage record in Maryland for Richard Lockwood. I have found nothing to connect him to the Aydelott family until several generations later (great grandchildren of Richard). In a span of over 180 years, it is easy to understand how some information can be confused. Later on in 1959, The History of the Aydelotte Family in the United States, was published by the Aydelott Family Association repeating that Richard Lockwood married Mary Aydelott. No source was given and after reviewing a collection of Aydelott papers on microfilm, I found nothing to prove this union and only the following note regarding the union found in The Aydelott Family Association Bulletin #26 dated 6 Dec 1939 stating the following: "One of our recent valued correspondents is Mrs. H. C. Patton, Bellevue, Pa., who is making a systematic search for material which will throw light on an Aydelott-Lockwood marriage supposed to have taken place shortly after 1700 in the State of Maryland. Later there was a Lockwood-Patton marriage and Mrs. Patton descends through this line." As late as 1939, there was no proof of a marriage between Richard Lockwood and Mary Aydelott, and apparently Mrs. Patton did not find it by the time of publication. I also found in The History of the Aydelott Family that the tree or chart found in the book, did not always reflect some of the records that are found in the Aydelott papers. As a case in point, #79 Zadock Aydelott (p. 5) shows that Zadock Aydelott and Mary____-no record of children and Zadock Aydelott and Mary (Collins) Aydelott had five children and goes on to list those children. Among the Aydelott papers is a transcription of a family Bible mentioned in one of the Aydelott bulletins: "In the summer of 1935, when we were doing research in Delaware, we met Mrs. Mattie Townsend, daughter of Stephen Collins Aydelott, at Millville. Among her treasured possession is the old family Bible which belonged to her father. It is one of the most fruitful and authentic sources of information we have found. Several pages of birth, marriage and death dates are recorded. It is from this source that we are able to identify George Howard Aydelott, Sr., (son of Zadock Aydelott and Mary Holland) father of George Howard Aydelott, husband of Zana G. Aydelott." And yet the data recorded in this bible (births, marriages and deaths) was not reflected in the family chart regarding Zadock and the Mary's Aydelott. Nor does it show the correct information for #49 Matthias Aydelott who married Elizabeth (Derickson) Holland , widow of Israel Holland, not daughter of Israel Holland as the chart states.
Based on the following records, it is my opinion that the Widow Mary (Aydelott) Blizard married 2nd William Pepper and she died sometime before 1727 as he mentions no wife in his will. The fact that John Blizard was paid 500 pounds of tobacco tells us that he did have a son by 1707 and I believe that son was John Blizard, Jr. and another son Benjamin, found on the tax lists as a dependent of William Pepper. The bequeath of "Peppers Delight" to John Blizard in William Pepper's 1726/7 will would then be understandable as it would have been to his stepson. Note that John Blizard, Jr. was also executor of William Pepper's estate. Finally, the fact that Elizabeth Pepper was bound over to Benjamin Aydelott, the brother of her presumed mother Mary for her care.
William Pepper was the father of the following children: Mary; probably Arnold (who apparently predeceased his father and does not appear on the Tax List after 1725 and not named in his 1726/7 will); William; and Elizabeth. William Pepper might have been married previously, but I have found evidence of that at this time.

16 June 1703 - Benjamin Aydelott of Somerset executes his last will and testament saying in part, "I also give unto a son that may be born of the body of my daughter Mary Blizard five hundred pounds of tobacco if God pleases and I give unto George Blizard five hundred pounds of tobacco to be paid him at the birth of his first child by my daughter Sarah his now wife...sons-in-law John and George Blizard, personalty.
Brandi, my Aydelott research is mainly pre-1800 in Maryland & Delaware. My 5th great-grandfather George Howard Aydelott died in 1803 in Nelson county, KY. I descend through his daughter, Elizabeth who married John Baird, Sr. I'm sorry but I haven't gone 'sideways' w/my Aydelott branch. Elizabeth Aydelott's descendants alone could take a lifetime to trace. Good luck & keep hunting.
Karen Scott Hull

Ned Davis Aydelotte was my great-grandfather. His daughter, Lila Maie, was my grandmother. I have a certified copy of her birth certificate which says she was the 7th child born to Ollie Bell Lowery Aydelotte, and six were living. The 1920 Census shows one more child - they were L. Robert, Lunie, Lena, Lillie, Arthur M., Lila Maie, and Lettie L.

I have a certified copy of Ned's death certificate with birthdate and parents' names.

Would love to share info with other Aydelott(e) researchers.

ayholtin@gmail.com

I just came across your offer to share info on the Aydelotte family. Today I found the name "John H. Aydelotte" who was married to a past cousin of mine: "Hallie Aurelia Bryan" b.28 Oct 1876 d. 15 Nov 1901. The "double" Headstone for her is in Web Chapel Cem. in Dallas Co., TX. and gives his name as her husband with no name/info in the space provided for him. I am looking for his data. (I know they had a daughter b. 1901 and died 1902 in Texas.) Can you help?

PS I have a copy of the picture of their headstone if you are interested.

Have you learned any more about the ancestry of your Aydelott? My Garrison family had members in Maury County Tennessee and then Montgomery County Illinois, near this Clement C.
Michelle:

I checked my files and I did not find a John H. Aydelott eho married a Hattie Bryan. There was only two John's that might be a canidate:

John H. Aydelott born 0 Nov., 1864 Gibson co., Indiand and died 17 JKuly, 1933 in Oklahoma who married in 1909 a Annie Laurls Hoff and he was son of Oscar Lewis Aydelott (1834-1878) & Aimmda Jane Redburn (1833-1913)

and
#2- John Hanaway Aydelott born 16 July, 1890 Untsville, Tn and married 9 June, 1931 in Kansas to Harriett Penner (1900-?) He was son of George Bowmand Aydelott (1853-1891 missouri) wife was Elizabeth Hoss (1854-1939)

Either one of these two could have had second wife but I do not think so.

If you have any other info that might be of some help I be glad to see it. There were several Aydelotts who settled in Texas and Oklahoma.

Sorry I coudl not be of more help....Chas of Tucson

Cost is roughly $5.00 & they'll keep them for your use indefinitely.

We have always known that the Aydelott(e)s in America were Huguenots that left France in late 1500's to England and then ca 1670's Benjamin and Marie, with children, came to colony of Virginia.

source: Jasper County, Iowa Biographies-1894 Publisher: Biographical Publishing Co., Chicago , Illinois

Subject: Ballinger Aydelott

"the paternal grandfather came to America from Germany, but the Aydelotts were really of French Ancestry. the forefathers removed from France into Germany during the Revolution in their native land."

This is the first time I have seen anything that told of the route taken to get to England. It is believed that the Aydelotts lived east of Paris France so going to Germany makes sense.

Chas of Tucson

Good Day again:

First I have not done any active research on the Blizzard line but here are some notes I took in 1999...
Robert Blizzard, says that John Blizzard arrived in Maryland on 4 Jan., 1719, on a ship that sailed from Overbury, Gloucerstershire, Southern England. He was indentured for 6 yrs as a servant, his agent was John Taylorof London. He was listed as a Yeoman and he married Wm Pepers(Pepper)'s daughterand produced at least three children...Benjamin; John who marred May Aydelott born 1680 in London dau of Benj and Marie Aydelott. They had a son James ....Mary married #2 Richard Lockwood. John and Mary married 1719 in Maryland and Joh was listed on Somerset, Md tax list in 1723. & lastly George born 1672 and died 1710 who married Sarah Aydelott born 1676 Worcester Co., Md dau of Benj and Marie Aydelott and sister to Mary above.

George and John Blizzard, Wm Peper, & Lincelot Stockwell brought land between Dividing Creek and Maurice River on the Yockwock Tract, in Downe Township near Delaware Bay. Believe it was in Maryland then and became Delaware???? Some of Benjamin Descendnats moved to Ohio and a lot of desc lived in New Jersey. Robert stated that the three Blizzard brothers were among the first to settle in southern New Jeersey. Cumberland County and that is where Downe Township is.

I have a note and not certain where I got the information Wm Blizzard whose dau Mary married Woodman Stockley ca 1728 Sussex Co., De and believe Blizzard Stockley was their son??
Hope that helos you some....Chas of Tucson

Good day ladies:

source of the following information is from the book"History of the Aydelott Family" by George Carl Aydelott published 1959.
2nd & 3rd pages of Preface of the book: "List of Tithables in the lower part of Northhampton county, Va. At a court held August 28, 1671, Benjamin Idolet (Aydelott) appears ion the list of Mr. Jophn Robins.
On 3rd page: Benjamin and Capt. John Robbins seem to have been on especially friendly terms, and it is know that Capt. Robbins was insterested in bringin Immigrants , from England to America. It could have been that he and Benjamin were associated in that venture. . I will check my files to see if I have anything else on this matter and on Blizzard family connected with Aydelott family.
Benjamin Aydelott b 1630 in London England s/o David

Looking for information about Benjamin father of Mary who married John Blizzard in 1720. I have read that Benjamin was a partner to Captain John Robbins and they made trips from England to Md bringing indentured servants to this country. I am interested in finding out the name of the ship and any other info about his life. Would also like to find proof that Mary indeed was the wife of John Blizzard.
