Ayers DNA Project: Ayers Ayres Aireg I1 DNA site

Several Lines of Ayers: Need More DNA samples
ANDREW MARTINadded this on 9 Nov 2009

The Ayers DNA project had identified several lines of Ayers, proving that unrelated people with the last name Ayers lived side by side. Anyone interested in participating in the site is invited to email me at martayers@yahoo.com, or visit the Southern Ayers group on Yahoo and the Ayers Ayres Aireg I1 DNA site on ancestry.

Here is a summary of results as of November 8, 2009.

Matching I1 line between descendants of Baker Jr./ Moses of Habersham, James M./ Thomas Allen Ayers of Habersham and Gallant/ Garland Ayers of NC. Partial match with Jesse Ayers of Habersham who is I1.

Separate I1 line out of Virginia and Kentucky/ Tennessee, more distantly related.

Matching R1b line from Daniel to Moses, Simpson Green to Asa to ? Baker Sr., Thomas Gentry Ayers of VA, with partial match to descendant of Obediah in Banks County, Ga.

Unmatching R1b line in descendant of Moses Jr. son of Moses Sr.

Unrelated R1b lines in Pennsylvania, unrelated I2 group.

NOTE: We need more DNA to make more sense of these results.

Different lines of Ayers proven by DNA

New DNA data: Gallant/ Garlint Ayers, Thomas Allen Ayers, Baker Ayers Jr. all have identical I1 DNA. Descendants of Simpson Green Ayers/ Asa Ayers, Thomas Gentry Ayers, William Russell/ Daniel/ Moses, and Obediah all have nearly identical R1b DNA. Jesse is I1, partially matching the above. Moses Jr. is R1b not matching the above R1b. George Ayers of VA/ Ky also forms an I1 group. Where do your Ayers fit in the puzzle? We need male Ayers DNA to refine and define the lines. Visit the Ayers I1 DNA site. Andrew Ayers Martin, M.D.

Ayers, Richard Johnson and Griffin, Louvenia of NC
Hello fellow researchers,

After much digging, I have found some missing links when it comes to Richard Johnson Ayers, born abt 1852, and Louvenia Griffin, born abt 1849. Please message me privately if you would like to see my tree or would like more info. Louvenia was the daughter of one Elijah Griffin, s/o a Hardy Griffith. Our immigrant ancestor on this side is Owen Griffin, from Wales. Intermarriage included the Hardy, Davis, Whitehead and other families, mostly Welsh. Louvenia's mother was Elizabeth Abiah Whitehead. There was significant intermarriage between the Whitehead and Griffins, and there are plethora of Hardy Griffins, so be careful when researching these names.

Richard Johnson Ayers' father was indeed one Richard T Ayers or Airs, said to be born around Plymouth, Washington Co (not Ireland). He is listed as a mariner there in 1850. There is an important Airs family in the Bertie/Washington/Tyrrell area at this time. I am not sure if this family was from England or Ireland...but Richard Johnson gives his father's birthplace as Ireland in a 1930 census.

Richard T Airs is listed as marrying one Elizabeth BLOUNT, born 1834. Not Johnson. They married in 1851. It's no wonder we could never find her. In the book Hugh Smithwick Descendants they are said to have three children, Richard T, James E, and Thomas. Elizabeth's parents were Robert Blount (said to be son of Stephen Blount), and Elizabeth Smithwick. Robert Blount died in 1849 leaving his widow with six children, Elizabeth B the oldest. His widow was dead by 1860. Elizabeth Smithwick's parents are listed as John Smithwick (a descendant of Samuel Smithwick and his wife Africa), and Sarah Susannah Hyman, a descendant of Hugh Hyman. My understanding is this family was Scots-Irish.

So, despite having had this great revelation, there is still a lot of lost information, and it is not easy for me to trace back Richard T Ayers, Robert Blount, or Elizabeth Smithwick with full certainty. Hopefully this is where everyone else can jump in and help out.

Happy hunting
Menna

Hi Vicky-

Mattie was my great-grandmother Elizabeth Abiah's sister. Their parents were Lavinia or Louvenia Griffin and Richard Johnson Ayers. I have done significant research on the Griffin family (originally Griffith) who have resided in the Albemarle Sound region since the 1600s. They are Welsh. Louvenia's father was Elijah Griffin, son of Hardy Griffin. The Griffith immigrant ancestor was Owen Griffith. I haven't had as much luck with the Ayers. RJ's parents were Richard Thomas Ayers, born ca 1825 and Elizabeth Johnson, who died young. RTA remarried and moved with his family to Mississippi, where he is buried. His family was from the Halifax/Washington/Tyrrell/Bertie/Chowan area. My best bet is he is of the Airs family of Tyrrell and Bertie. I believe his father is Richard Ayers, b 1794, son of David Airs. I have no idea who Elizabeth Johnson's family is, except there is a Jacky Johnson (f) listed as living with the family in an 1870 census.

The Davis surname comes up quite a bit in both the Griffin and Ayers family lines. I am curious about the Indian story...as far as I know we have no Native American in the family.

Feel free to send me a message if you'd like more info.

Menna

Looking for descendants of Alfred William Ayers (b.1864, Cambridge, England) and his wife George M. (last name unknown, b.1873 in Nebraska). He was a Congregational minister. In the 1900 census they were in WisnerTownship, Cuming County, Nebraska. in 1905 in Onaga, Pottawatomie County, Kansas. In 1910 in WisnerTownship, Cuming County, Nebraska. In 1920 he was the minister of a Congregational Church in Bonne Terre City, Perry Township, St. Fancis County, Missouri. He died before 1930. I believe he had three daughters, Gladys, Phyllis, and Angelina. I have a huge Ayers family tree I would love to share with this branch of the family, the only one to come to the US in the 1800s.
Pam Perryman

Ayers/Ayres DNA

Any known descendants of Ayers/Ayres in the Southeast, from Moses, Baker, Thomas, Daniel, George, Nathaniel or the Moses married to the Vittuto female are strongly encouraged to get DNA samples. Two haplotypes are present: I1 and R1b. The lines are in disarray and need to be validated by DNA analysis correlated with last known ancestor information. It would also be interesting to correlate these groups with Ayers/ Ayres from the Northeast.
Andrew Ayers Martin, M.D., J.D.

Re: WILLIAM BAKER AYERS (b.1814)

Lt. Col. Frank Henning's book Ayers and Heirs states that Baker Ayers Sr. was born in 1750, while Baker Jr. was born n 1769 married Betsy and had Moses 1794-1870. Another Baker went to Missouri. A Baker Jr. is listed as a party to a lawsuit with Garlint Ayers of Yancy, NC, whose descendants say he belongs to this group. The problem is compounded by the presence of two apparent Ayers families living side by side. Recent DNA evidence suggests Garlint was connected to my ancestor Thomas Allen Ayers of Franklin and Habersham born 1826, while some descendants of Moses have different DNA. Garlint, Thomas Allen and George Ayers descendants from Tennessee are I1, while one Moses descendant is R1b. The problem is further compounded by the presence of several Moses Ayers living in the southeast at the same time. If you have any male Ayers relatives, strongly encourage them to get DNA.
Emily Eliza Ayers was the daughter of John Ayers and Elizabeth Ann Poole.

John Ayers married Elizabeth Ann Poole on 14 Feb 1809 in Elham, Kent, England

In the 1841 census John is a butcher in Nonington, Kent, England - living with his wife Elizabeth, daughters Elizabeth and Emily and son Henry.

Their daughter Elizabeth Ann Ayers was born c1812 in Elham, Kent, England and was baptised on 09 Jan 1812 in Elham, Kent, England

It looks like Henry Ayers was born c1820 in Nonington, Kent, England and that Emily Eliza Ayers was born in 1821 Nonington, Kent, England and baptised on 11 Nov 1821 in Nonington, Kent, England

In the 1851 census John Ayers is still a butcher in Nonington, Kent, England. John is living with his wife Elizabeth and daughters Elizabeth & Matilda and son Henry (all the children are in their 30s but not married) and granddaughter Margaret Manser (Emily Eliza Ayers married Edward Manser in Dec 1847)

Matilda Ayers was born in 1814 in Nonington, Kent, England and baptised on 21 Sep 1814 in Nonington, Kent, England

John Ayers died in Q4 1853.

In the 1861 census Elizabeth Ann Ayers is a widow living in Nonington, Kent, England with her daughter Matilda and granddaughter Emily Manser.

Elizabeth Ann Ayers (nee Poole) died in Q2 1862.

John Ayers was born in Lower Halstow, Kent, England c1781. His parents were James Ayers and Sarah Whitehead. John was baptised on 14 Jan 1781. Other siblings include:
Hannah Ayers (bapt. 17 Mar 1771)
Thomas Ayers (bapt. 23 Apr 1775)
Sarah Ayers (bapt. 16 Nov 1777) )
Jeremiah Ayers (bapt. 06 Jul 1783)
William Ayers (bapt. 17 Jun 1787)
Henry Ayers (bapt. 30 Dec 1792)
Mary Ann Ayers (bapt. 29 Mar 1795)

James Ayers married Sarah Whitehead on 11 Jun 1770 in Lower Halstow, Kent, England

Elizabeth Ann Poole was born in 1790 in Elham, Kent, England. Her parents were Daniel Poole and Ann(e) Hogben. Elizabeth Ann Poole was baptised on 17 Oct 1790. Other siblings include:

William Chaplin Poole (bapt. 22 Feb 1784)
Daniel Poole (bapt. 19 Aug 1792)
Ann Poole (bapt. 09 Apr 1797)

Daniel Poole married Ann(e) Hogben on 01 May 1783 in Elham, Kent, England.

Daniel Poole died in Oct 1834 and was buried in Elham, Kent, England on 22 Oct 1834. He was 75 years old which would mean he was born c1759.

Ann Poole (nee Hogben) died in Mar 1849 and was buried in Elham, Kent, England on 25 Mar 1849. She was 86 years old which would mean she was born c1763.

Ann(e) Hogben was most likely the daughter of William & Elizabeth Hogben. Ann(e) Hogben was born in Elham, Kent, England in 1762 and was baptised on 08 Aug 1762. Other siblings include:

William Hogben (bapt. 30 Dec 1764)
Mary Hogben (bapt. 05 Jun 1768)
Edward Hogben (bapt. 07 Jan 1770)
John Hogben (bapt. 02 May 1773)
George Hogben (bapt. 16 Jul 1775)
Charles Hogben (bapt. 22 Dec 1778)
Edmund Hogben (bapt. 15 Jul 1781)

It looks like William Hogben died in 1800 and was buried in Elham, Kent, England on 05 Apr 1800. His age was 65 which would mean he was born c1735.

It looks like Elizabeth Hogben died in 1818 and was buried in Elham, Kent, England on 05 Dec 1818. Her age was 81 which would mean she was born c1737.

Robin

Azariah Ayers and wife, Mary (Vanarsdall?) - 1770s

I have seen posted that the wife of Azariah Ayers (b. abt. 1770 in NJ) is Mary Vanarsdall, possible daughter of Christopher Vanarsdall. I am a descendent of Christopher Vanarsdall through his daughter Anne. I’ve been stuck on Christopher for a while, so I’m asking for your help.

What’s leading some researchers to believe that Mary, wife of Azariah Ayers, is a Vanarsdall? Geographically, I can see a potential connection: All probably were born in NJ, probably in Somerset County, all later lived in Mercer County, KY, and then Gibson County, IN.

I’m hoping that an Ayers researcher will be able to help me chip away at my Vanarsdall log jam!

Thanks,
Debbi
