Aylmer/Elmer/Elmore

Please can anyone help me find a family by the name of Aylmer/Elmer/Elmore - father was Noah who would have been born circa 1795, not sure where, the mother was Mary born circa 1796 in Hertfordshire, possibly Hitchin or more likely Baldock. Several sons could have included Robert, Frederick, George, Noah junior and daughter Catherine born 1841/2. In 1861 Noah was a widower and living with daughter Catherine only in Lower Smith Street, Clerkenwell - but not there in 1851. Mary said to have died in 1860 in Biggleswade, Beds.

Any help gratefully received
Mary Elizabeth Aylmer and James Gavin

I'm looking for information on Mary Elizabeth Aylmer (b. 1860), her husband James (E./F.) Gavin (b. 1858) and their descendants. They lived in Renssalaer County, NY from about 1880-1900, then lived in Albany County through the 1930 census. They had eight children, of whom one daughter survived - Mary Elizabeth (b. 1884). Any help would be much appreciated.

Margot McBath Dudewicz
margotmdudewicz@yahoo.com

Hello,

How is your wife related to the Aylmer family? I am descended from Anne and Jan ten Cate (anglicised to John Tencate). Their children were born at Stockland, Devon. Their son, John Aylmer,
is in my line. The family lived in the Netherlands for a while and Anne may have died there (if my memory is correct).
The Kildare Gentry - Aylmer

Turtle Bunbury’s debut book, “The Landed Gentry & Aristocracy of Kildare”, offers a unique and lively historical insight into eighteen of Co. Kildare’s most influential “big house” families. The book features fifty illustrations and covers more than a thousand years of Irish history. The families profiled are those of Aylmer, Barton, de Burgh, Clements, Conolly, Guinness, Henry, Fennell, FitzGerald, Latten, La Touche, Mansfield, Maunsell, Medlicott, More O’Ferrall, Moore, de Robeck, and Wolfe. The story of these often eccentric dynasties is set against the backdrop of the past – the violent religious wars of the 17th century, the rise of the British Empire in the 18th and the run up to Irish independence in 1921.
Please contact me on turtski@iolfree.ie if you are interested in a copy of this book.

Read of
· the Celbridge connection to the Salem Witch Trials
· French Tom Barton and the vineyards of France
· the remarkable terrier who journeyed from Forenaghts to Bristol
· the Admiral from Naas who led the Dardanelles campaign
· the medieval ape who saved the Earl of Kildare’s life
· the assassination of Lord Killwarden
· the bizarre death of Viscount Drogheda
· the Kildare man who attempted to win the US Civil War single handed
· the rise of the Irish Quakers
· the ill-fated rebellion of Silken Thomas
· the innkeepers son who became the richest man in Ireland
· the Moyvalley man who gave Malta its first taste of independence
· the gentleman who served with the IRA
Aylmer family from Chase, B.C.

Does anyone know anything of the Aylmer Family who built a big house on the South Thompson River in Chase, B.C. "Lord" Aylmer , as he was called, was in charge of dredging the South Thompson River between Kamloops and Chase. The house was built in 1910 or 1911. Our family , the Ewanyshyn's , owned it from 1959 to 2001. I am now trying to do some history on this place and the families that lived there. William and Mary Potts and daughters lived there before us in the 1950's . Anyone with any pictures or stories ,please contact me.

Hi, I know its a long time since your message. I have info about Balrath (Meath) Aylmers ( My wife's Family). Henry 3rd Baron was 2nd son of Henry 2nd Baron. Matthew eldest died unmarried on 2.9.1748. Henry was baptised 21.5.1718 at St Pauls Covent Garden. At early age joined R Navy - 0n 18.9.1741 promoted to be Cpmmander HMS Port Mahon.
In 1741 married Anne, daur William Pierce of Virginia. Succeeded as 3rd Baron in 1754. Anna died 24.10.1756 and he died 7.10.1766. They had children Henry (died infant), Henry and Anne. Henry became 4th Baron. Anne b.17.9.1746 married Jan ten Cate (sic) who was b. in Haarlem in 1750 and d. in England in 1823. She d. 12.3.1820. There were several children but I have no details.

Incidently the 2nd Baron in his will dated 17.9.1751(probate 15.7.1754) left his farm in Houghham in Kent to his son Henry for life, and then to his son's male heir.

Have a lot more about Aylmers but no more going down your branch.

Hope this some use, Martin Collyer

According to the LDS Ancestral File, my Elmer surname was originally Aylmer. Apparently, an ancestor of ours was born in Aylmer Hall, Tierney, England in 1521. His father was John Aylmer, born in Norfolk, England in 1495. I am not certain of the accuracy of the information and I am hoping to find some clarification.

Hi Narelle

The only info I have is that my 4 x gt grandmother Charlotte Wilson (b 1809) who md Thomas Kenny was a grand daughter of the Aylmer Family of Ireland and England. She is the one who gave the name Aylmer to three of her children.

Courtenay William Aylmer Thomas Kenny (My line)
Charlotte Aylmer Kenny
Aylmer Francis Kenny.

My 1st cousin Aylmer Kenny will be in OZ very soon to participate in the International Police Basketball Tournament, I think in Victoria.

I was contacted by a Aylmer family member who said that we connect to the Lord Aylmer in England whose family is well documented although I could not find any connection.

One clue is that The Wilson family arrived in India from Stoke Newington near London, so I am concentrating on that area.

Another prominent name is Nepean and both Aylmer and Nepean started in the Kenny family generations at the same time, so I am checking that name JUST IN CASE.

Interestingly our Kenny family intermarried big time into various Walker lines so maybe through your partner, that may yet be a connection

Regards

Aubry

researching Aylmer name

My grandfather, William Aylmer was born in 1845. His Masonic records give his 'nativity' as Leitrim, Ireland. Other biographical information says he was born and raised in or near Montreal. He came to the United States from Canada in the early 1860's and had businesses in Minnesota and Black Hills territory (Deadwood), before settling in Fargo, D.T. in about 1878, where he established the Empire Bottling Works. I have heard he had a sister named Rose. Also, one source says he was the 9th Baronet of Aylmer. His parents are said to have gone the the California gold rush and that they were never heard from again. I would sure like to find some about the Aylmer relatives that are supposed to have raised him between him between 1848 and the early 1860's. My father, A. William Aylmer was born in Fargo in 1880.

My ancestor, Henry AYLMER, 3rd Baron of Balrath, Captain
in the Royal Navy, died near Hitchin, Ickleford, Hertfordshire, in 1766. He was buried at Greenwich, Kent. His family was from Kildare, Ireland, but he was christened in London and his family lived in the London/Kent area.

I find it interesting that Noah Aylmer was a resident of Hitchin.
Was there family property that we could find in common?
I have never been able to find out why my ancestor was living at that location when he died. Is this a coincidence or was there a relationship?

By the way, my father's middle name was Elmore. He was the last of a long line of men (and several women) whose middle names were Aylmer, Aymar, Almour, and Elmore.

Regarding the Aylmer family there is a book titled 'The Aylmers of Ireland' published in 1931 , There is a copy in the Greenwich Naval History Museum , London and gives a comprehensive catalogue af all the Aylmers and the family trees. Personally I have a line to Lord Aylmer of Co Meath but the whole family were important people , many were captains and later one was MP for Maidstone. There are towns in Canada named after Govenor Aylmer.

Dear Carol my great great grandmother was a Mary Ann Aylmer who was born in West Acre Norfolk England about 1850. Do you have any information on her family at all? I know they were farmers and she was one of I think at least 5 daughters. She was also educated at Notting Hll Gate in London which seemed unusual for that day and age. Any information would be appreciated.
Aylmer connection - India ??

My 4th GT grandfathers name is Courtenay William Aylmer Thomas Kenny, his sisters name is Charlotte Aylmer Kenny, his brother Aylmer Francis Kenny.

My line carries the name Aylmer down to the present, yet we didn't know why this name was prominent in our family.

CWAT Kenny was born in Burma 25 Dec 1835. Were any Aylmer family member serving in India around that time, why it became a family name in the Kenny family.

A grand uncle said it's because of a maternal line prior to CWAT Kenny.

Family connections back then are Wilson, Geils, Turner, Crowe, Evans.

Any help appreciated.

regards

Aubry of Porirua, New Zealand

Aylmers of Ireland and Canada

William,

I am descended from the Aylmers of Ireland.
My ancestor, Anne Aylmer, was the daughter of
Sir Henry Aylmer, 3rd Baron of Balrath.

Did you know that there was an Aylmer who
was a Governour-General of Canada? I found out about him in an encyclopedia. Our old
family story about having a cousin who held
that position was what led me to check
Burke's Peerage and make the connection to
Anne, who is listed as marrying a Mr. TENCKE.
BTW, my maiden name was TENCATE. It turns out that Jan Isaacszn ten Cate, a linen merchant's son from Holland, was her music
teacher. She married him against the family's wishes and was disinherited.

The Aylmer family lived between England
and Ireland and had a history of several generations of officers of the Royal Navy.
One of them was the governour of the Naval
Hospital at Kent, England. My ancestor,
Henry, 3rd Baron, is buried in the RN cemetery at Kent. There are also some wives of the barons who had noble ancestry.

You mentioned a Rose Aylmer? Did you know
that there was a poem written about her?

I have been working on this line for several years now but would have to get out
some records to be more specific. I would
be glad to work with you concerning your
Aylmer connection. I have found two very distant cousins on the 'net and we have
started a TENCATE/WOOD MyFamily page that includes some Aylmer information that might
interest you. You need a special link to get into the page. If you are interested we
would be glad to send you an invitation with
the link included.

Carol Battin
Washington, WV, USA

James-John-William Aylmer

I am descended from James Aylmer who came to the U.S. with his wife Mary Farrell about 1859 into New York City. They had two sons John(1860) and William(?) and a daughter Marietta. John is my grandfather. The family moved to Minnesota in 1878. James, Mary, William and Marietta moved back to New York City about 1895 but my grandfather John stayed in Minnesota where my father Wilfred was born in 1902. He was the youngest of five children. Marietta died in 1897. According to the 1900 census of NYC, William had married Anne(?) and was living with his parents. We are looking for any descendants of William and Anne.

My great-grandmother Mary Farrell died in 1905. My great-grandfather, James Aylmer, moved back to Ireland and remarried where he died in 1911. We found his grave site in Wexford.

Any details you can provide would be appreciated.
Betsy Aylmer-Zimmerman
