I hate to correct you, but my late grandfather traced AYRIS back to the 15-16th century. Henry Ayris was the headhuntsman to one of the Lord Fitzwalters, there is a Tapestry of him presenting the foxes at the end of the hunt....

Hmm, a demonstration of how easy it is to distort the name Ayris. I'm looking for information on the family of Susannah Louisa AYRIS, born 1888 Camberwell or probably 1887 in Mile End. One of her brothers went to Australia and returned to UK, but I believe other family members stayed in Australia.
I'd be very grateful for any info.
Sally Parrott

Peter

Josiah seems to be a common Ayris name and Im sure there is a connection to me somewhere there. My Ayris is my paternal grandmothers mother Sarah Elizabeth Ayris who was born on 19 feb 1848 in the parish of St George's in the East, London. She was the daughter of Henry Ayris (he is called Ayres in some places) and Emma Papworth. They had some other children, Thomas, Henry and Robert, Henry was born in 1852 in Bethnal Green he had two sons Henry and Herbert, Herbert was born in 1900 in Bow and Henry in 1896 in Bow. As well as these two sons he also had 3 daughters.

Hope this helps you

kim

Hi Emma
I am tracing my family tree and come across a Josiah Ayris who was married to my Great grandmother (1901 census) his second wife I believe and had a number of children with her. Most of my family seem to have come from Mile End Old Town and I wasn't born to far away in Bromly by Bow and lived 20 odd years off Grove Rd. I have only resently came the Ayris name and am tring to find the origin of the name.
Peter

Yes, most of my fathers side of the family came from the East End of London. My fathers mother was born within the sound of bow bells, so she was a real cockney. Her mother was Sarah Elizabeth Ayris, the daughter of Henry Josiah Ayris and Emma Papworth. My great grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Ayris had a number of brothers and sisters, Henry Josiah (Josiah seems to be a family name), Thomas, Robert (another coincidence), Emma and James Thomas (could this be your James he was born 9/6/1854). James Thomas was christened on 3 jan 1858 at St Peters Stepney.

kim Ricketts

Hi There,
Yes, I discovered that too with my Ayris relatives - they were mistranscribed as Ayres on several censuses.
On the subject of the Ayris family, did yours happen to come from the East End of London, Bethnal Green/St George's East areas? I'm descended from a John William Ayris, father James Ayris I think. He was a 'Pearl Worker' (a trade I've haven't managed to find anything about) and seemed quite an interesting chap as he has a different wife on all the censuses! I wondered if you had a link with him, James or any of his siblings (a Robert, George, Henry, Joseph, Josiah, Felice, Anna or Frederick Ayris)?
Regards,
Emma

A warning for all researching the AYRIS name

I have discovered in my researches that the AYRIS name is often mispelt. this is owing to the fact that most working class people of the 19th century and earlier couldnt read or write, therefore, their names were often transcribed by other people who just wrote down the nearest spelling they thought would be right. Also not being able to read and write meant they couldnt spell either, so they had no way of making sure their name was spelt correctly.. So in researching AYRIS, look for AYRES, AYRISS or any other near name. On the census records in Ancestry.com you will also find that its a good idea to view the scanned image of the original page. One of my relations Thomas Papworth was transcribed from the original as the daughter-in-law of my Ayris ancestor, its very indistinct, but going by his age and name he would have been the brother-in-law.

The last posting on this name was quite some time ago, so i hope you are all still reading this.
My interest is in my great grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Ayris, who was born on the above date at 12 Mary Ann Street, St Georges in the East, London.
Sarah Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Josiah Ayris, who was a bootmaker and was born in approximately 1828 somewhere in Middlesex, her mother was Emma Papworth, the daughter of a bootmaker. Henry Josiah was the son of a shoemaker, James Ayris or Ayres.
Sarah Elizabeth married Arthur Alexander Skinner on 10th August 1868 and they were the parents of my paternal grandmother Emma Agnes Skinner.
Does anyone have any information on this family. There seems to be a number of people on this post who have connections to East London.

My ancestor was Martha Ann Ayris who married William Fells in Whitechapel in 1874. Martha did live in Poplar in the early 1900's as she had her children there but her name was obviously Fells. Her father was George Ayris born 1820 and his father was James Ayris who married a Mary Walker.

You can email off this if you wish at helen.finch@slaughterandmay.com

Have you come across these names?

Hi Helen, We are unsure about the Oxfordshire connection, but our family were at least two generations living in Poplar, London at the turn of the century. Do you think there could be a connection with your Great Grandfather? Where did he marry? Where in the east end were they located?

Whereabouts did your Ayris family come from in London? I have an Ayris line there in East End and I know that they originated from Oxfordshire. Perhaps there is a connection.

It appears to me that we all originated in London, although one would have thought that we would have come from the Scottish borders (Ayrshire). Anyway, we are the London Branch of Ayris'. We never left! We only can remember three generations, and all from the Eastend.

Jayne and Doug Ayris.

Hi - My name is Mandi Ayris. I am 33 from East Yorkshire although I will shortly be moving to Brighton.
I am the last of 'our' family as there are 3 girls and no boys. I married and took my husbands name as well as keeping my own, making us double-barrelled! We thankfully never had children and now that I am divorced, I have reverted to my maiden name once again. My family came from around London but I think my dads dad was originally from Ipswitch. Sorry to waffle on....

My gt. grandmother's maiden name was Ayris and we are trying to trace this unusual surname. We are at a loss as to where it originated as her father married in London in 1849 but we cannot find anything before that indicating where he was from? Any suggestions?
