My family name is azpeitia from Cuba but when we imigrated to the US in 1960 they mispelled the name to Aspeitia changing the z to s.

My Dad was born in Cuba and his father in Key West Florida . The Azpeitia name is not very common in Cuba...I have heard that we have family in Mexico as my Grandfather studied there and lived there as a young man.

My father always said our roots were from Spain but I do not know much about the Mexico side. Please reply with any other information you can offer.

Thanks

Rosa

Greetings Cousins Frank and Sixto!-
I have some new info for you guys. I received a copy of the family tree from my (recently discovered and connected) cousin Rhonda. I had seen this tree as a boy but never got my own copy until last month.

I suspect that all three of us share a common ancestor in Geronimo Azpeitia and Maria Feliz Rocha. Who, I beleive, are our shared great-great-grandparents.

Frank: I have a Francisco Azpetia listed on it as the son of Meliton (and Carmelita), . Siblings listed are: Juan and two unnamed sisters.
Meliton was my great-grandfather Wenceslao's brother.
You and I appear to be second cousins, once removed.

Sixto:
I think you are on this tree. you mentioned that you are the third with your name. I have a Sixtos Azpeitia III, son of Sixto jr, son of Sixtos (and Josephina), son of Marcos Azpetia (and Macedonia Duran Guerrero). Marcos was also a brother to Wenceslao.
I have no siblings listed for Sixto jr. but for the first Sixto (son of Marcos)I have Felipe, Luz, Tagrino, Mariano, Francisco (a different one), Juan, Juanita, Refujio, Matilde, Marcos jr, Manuel, and Guadalupe.
You and I would also second cousins, once removed.

if this is all accurate then Sixto and Frank, you are also second cousins, once removed to each other as well.

Please let me know if this sounds right to you guys.
if you want to contact me further outside of here please feel free to send me an email.

Great! Thanks for the quick response! I was just talking to my mom and she said that the reunion was in Montebello, Ca. She also knows of Jess and Lala. His brother was Sebastian and his sister was Ernestina. Also there is another relation in Los Angeles and his name is Marcos Azpetia. I have visited with him and he is 99 years of age. This may be a good resource for you. Please email me a copy of the family tree and I will respond in kind. My mother has done some additional research and has information on the Azpetia family. My email address is djwlopez@yahoo.com thanks again. Richard

I am looking for the azpeitia family tree. I attended a family reunion in los angeles in the eighties and I remember we were given a leather patch with the date and we were supposed to get a copy of the family tree but never got it. I've seen it before and it goes all the way back to the 1500's. My mother tells me that alot of azpetia's lived in los angeles along time ago. Her name is Cecilia. Any info would be helpful even if there's a family website.

Rhonda, thanks for getting back to me. I have been researching more since I posted but it appears the that your great-grandfather Pedro, and my great-grand father Wenceslao were full brothers. sons of Geronimo Duran Azpeitia and Maria Feliz Rocha of New Mexico. I think I figured out that Jess and Jesus were the same person, son of Pedro. I can best be contacted either through facebook (JC Karrantza) or email: jc.karrantza@us.army.mil I live in Portland Oregon but am currently in Iraq

Hello Ponces and Azpeitias, My name is JC Karrantza and I have discovered something very interesting but need your contributions. I recently restarted doing a family tree here and have found more Azpeitias than I knew existed in the states.
My Mother's Father was William Espino Azpeitia, who's parents were Wenceslao Duran Azpeitia and Apoloinaria Espino(who had 4 sons and 3 daughters who lived it to have children of their own.) now we can all agree that the Duran/Azpeitia combination is quite distinctive. further Wenceslao's parents were Geronimo Duran Azpeitia and Maria Feliz Rocha. back to them in a minute.

In seaching ancestry.com I came across the lines branching from Sebastian Duran, Jesus, and Maria, all rooted to a common father: Pedro Rocha Azpeitia. another branch is the line descending from Jess Duran Azpeitia and his wife Candelaria.

Now here's where things get a little wierd; the 1930 Census lists Jess and his wife and their children and her parents (Romolo and Louise Diaz) and her two brothers but it also lists Jess' uncle: Pedro Rocha. I anow the two are connected but it doesnt stop there. I found a document confirming that Pedro's parents were indeed Geronimo and Maria and that he was in fact the same pedro in Jess' house in 1930, making Jess's line (Ramona, Arhtur, Stella, and Rose Marrie) and his Uncle Pedro's (Jesus, Maria and Sebastian) related to mine. but how? either Wenceslao had a son (Jess) that we never knew about or there was a THIRD brother (uncle to my grandfather) the we never knew about. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER JESS' FATHER'S NAME? I for one am very exited about all this. anyone who can help please feel free to contact me directly.

Elena, tell me if I am correct. Your father is actually the THIRD Clement Azpeitia. his father was Master Clement Espino Azpeitia and his father was Clement Espino Azpeitia Sr, US Marine Corps killed in WWII. If that is so then you Great grandfather and my grandfather (William Espino Azpeitia) were brothers. please get in touch with me. I am your cousin.

Hi everyone,
This is my first time visiting and not too sure how this works but I'll learn. I'm Rhonda, Helen's daughter. Helen is the daughter of Martin and Maria Ponce. She married Fred Lahmann in San Diego then moved to Ohio. We still live in Ohio and we'll be visiting the rest of the gang in San Diego in July. I want to find out more about my family. I have a copy of the family tree from the 1976 Azpeitia family reunion so I would love to put a face with a name. I see my Aunt Janie has wrote an entry so I will try to call her tomorrow. I remember staying with Lala and Jess during one of our family vacations years ago. I remember Uncle Jess feeding his piranhas. Those were such precious times. Hope to stay in touch with everyone.
A long distant cousin,
Rhonda Lahmann

Thanks for positing the photo!

Harlan is my dad, Sebastian, Jesus’ brother, was my grandfather; I’m the youngest of six children. Do you know what year the picture was taken? Is Maria in the photo to Jesus’ left? She bears a strong resemblance to Ernestine to me, at least from what I remember and the pics I’ve seen. Is Candelaria also a relative, and if so, on the Ponce side or the Azpeitia side?

Hi Janie
I tried e-mailing you a couple of times. I'm the daughter of Rose Marie Azpeitia. Her Father was Jesus Azpeitia. My aunt Ramon was very happy to hear that I found her cousins. She is in her 80's now and doesn't really us the computer much But I would very much like to do this for her. She us to write letters to Harlen who is her first cousin. I would like to talk with Erinie because I also was at the Azpeitia reunion too. I remember the picture he talks about. In fact I had all the picture from that day that my grandfather took because when my grandparents passed away I lived in there house for awhile. I really did'nt know who all the people where and so when my mother passed away and i saw my uncle Rudy I gave him the pictures. He took out the picture of all the orignal brothers and sisters and showed it to me. the envelope had about 50 pictures of just that day. I know that you, me, and Ernie would have a lot to talk about. I need to get in touch with you please try to call me (951-751-8020)it would be so nice to do this for my aunt Ramona.
Hope to hear from you soon Janine

Actually, if one of his sister's was Ernestine, then your grandfather Jesus and my grandfather Sebastian were brothers. I'm pretty sure I can recall my dad mentioning his "Uncle Jess", which was in all likelihood, your grandfather, and my dad has a cousin Rudy Azpeitia. I'll ask him this weekend.

Ernie always talked about the girls growing up together when they would visit. So which one is your parent? How many of your aunts and uncles are still alive and who are the cousins related to? I did see a message from a grandchild of Sebastion. He had just passed away(the second time) when I met Ernie, We live in Ramona CA which is about 25 miles SE of Escondido. I know Ernie would love to talk to you, if you would like email me and I will give you our # jponce1067@aol.com Ernie is 70 years old and doesn't use the computer.
Wow,thank you for replying. My husband is Ernest Azpeitia Ponce and his mom was Maria who was Ernestine's sister. Ernestine did not have any of her own children bur helped raise Maria's 16. Does your dad remember Ernie? He was born in 38 so how old is your dad? I think I had just met ernie about the time of your grand father's death about 1966 or 7? Where do you live? Ernie has been trying to track down any cousins still living, so if you are interested in talking to him let me know please, Janie
