My grand father was also a Baade (earlier spelled Bade) from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. Where the name originally came from (I have seen Dutch) is something of a mystery, but my great aunt said it was a fairly common name near the Baltic.

I have traced my line to the early 1700's near Dreilutzow, MS, Germany (the spelling was Bade then).

That is exactly how my grand father pronouced it! His father came from Liepe, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. I traced the family back several generations in Dreilutzow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the spelling varied between Bade and Baade. My great grandfather changed the spelling from Bade to Baade in Germany.

Re: Sophia Baade from Mecklenburg, Germany

Lot's of luck. If you knew what town in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, you would easily be able to find her birth in the parish records for that town. The Mecklenburg-Schwerin census is probably not going to help because the 1819 census was before her birth. The 1867 census might help but Sophie or Sophia is a very common name for a girl in Mecklenburg-Schwerin and unfortunately, the census for 1867 only gives the year of birth. So, it is not very likely that you will be able to find Sophia in the 1867 census. But try searching for Sophia Baade's and see how many there are. If you knew a town in M-S, it would be a straightforward exercise to find her birth record(with microfilms borrowed from LDS).

The only other option I can think of is the year of immigration. People who emigrated from Mecklenburg-Schwerin were supposed to apply for permission from the authorities. You can write to the archives in Schwerin and see if they have such an application on file. This an expensive application search (~$100) and there are not applications for everyone. All of my maternal great grand parents came from Mecklenburg around 1870-1890. There was an application from only one of my great grand parents; whether the others ignored the requirement or the applications were lost, I haven't a clue.

If you google her name you will find a link about the funeral of Robertus Cramer. This is a list of the people present at the funeral, and if you scroll down to item 66 you will find her name. Additionally if you google 'DBU Ceylon', you will find you are able to access the genealogical records of the Dutch Burgher Union of Ceylon. Click on the 'V's or scroll down to the van der Wert genealogies. You will find Anna Cornelia Baade mentioned at the very beginning.

This is a strange coincidence if that is what it is. May I ask where you have your soruces from? Do you know anything more about her ancestors ? I could not contact You privately since I do not subscribe for a Pro membership. Here is what I have on her and her ancestors http://home.broadpark.no/~torgn/650.htm (Use google translator). Anything You have about her including references to sources would be very helpful. If you go to the bottom of the page there will be a link to table of contents. On that page you will find a mailaddress to contact me if you wish.

This would seem like a coincidence, but an Anna Cornelia Baade born in Cochin India ( no dates found ) married Jan van der Wert in the Dutch Reformed Church at Galle, Ceylon on July 31st 1757. Is it possible that there was another member of the Baade family who could have been employed with the Dutch East India Company in India and Ceylon? Or, could this be the same Cornelia?!

Hello,

I'm attempting to make the great leap, tracing someone back across the Atlantic. I'm looking for information on my great X3 grandmother, Sophia Baade. The only information I have about her is her name, and an 1870 census report from Watertown, Wisconsin that lists her as being born in Mecklenburg @ 1827.

I unfortunatly have nothing else to go on, and am reduced to begging for help. Sophia married Carl Marquart (born @1827 in Hanover) sometime after both had emigrated to the US. Other than this I have one paragraph in an old family history, which I will copy verbatum:

"The wife of Carl Marquart was Sophia Baade whose only brother Carl Baade, faithful to an early love, remained unwed. He died in Philidelphia at the ripe age of 90 years, some four years back (@1935). The only sister of Sophia was Amalia Baade who married William Eggersgluess. Thier children are Daniel, Jack, Albert, Otto, William, Mrs. Rolke, Mrs. Carrie Rosin, and by a later marriage Helen Eggersgluess Killian and Louis Eggersgluess."

Carl Marquart emigrated directly to Watertown, WI after arrival in America @ 1848, so I must assume that Sophia, Amalia and Carl Baade must have lived in Watertown with their parents. Carl and Sophia's first child, Augusta, was born @ 1856, in Watertown.

If anyone has any information regarding this family, and can help me make that cross-ocean leap, I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you,

Dave Irving
perfessordave@hotmail.com
