origins of "Baba" surname

My father is from Lebanon, the surname is not uncommon in the northern city of Tripoli ("Tarablus" in Arabic). I understand that the origins are North African. David Baba is correct that "Baba" in colloquial Arabic means father; however, another meaning is "the Pope" (an odd name for a Muslim family).
