Re: Baba surname

This is an update to my previous post in 2004:

WW1 Draft Card lists Abraham Tattos Baba as being from Urmia, Persia, born Dec 15, 1886.

He states he has a wife and 4 children, and he is living in Stoneboro, Mercer PA at the time. He works for a coal mining company there.

The date of the draft card is June 1917. He must still be in the Stoneboro area as of Nov 1917, as my grandmother was born in July of 1918 in Butler, PA.
Family memory although dim states he promised to return for my great grandmother who was 17 at the time (he was 28-29) but never returned, due to WW1 or returning to the family he already had. No one knows for sure, he never returned and it wasn't spoken of again in the family. A sad story really because there is a gaping whole in the family history surrounding him.

The name turns up again in the Chicago census of 1920, with wife and children. Age is close but not exact. His native tongue is listed as Armenian, which would agree with what nationality was listed on my grandmother's BC as father, but he is living in an area of Chicago that is Assyrian.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, and what our family would really like is perhaps a picture of Abraham T Baba so that we may see resemblances.
Dear Babazedah,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Your reply is most interesting to me. I haven't yet had anyone reply regarding the BABA surname, so we may have a good connection here! You are the first to send me a message, I am most grateful that you have taken the time to do so.

I would like to keep in touch with you. You may send me a personal email as well and we can work together to see if we are somehow related - if you visit my website you will find my personal email mentioned there and it should be accessable from this ancestry page if you login.

My family's history and our rich heritage is very important to me! Please do let me know what your Grandmother says. Do you have any relatives with the name PEARA or PEARAH?

Best wishes to you.

Christy Shalitta Hooper

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/h/a/Christy-M-S...

I don't know much about our family history. However, we are persian, and Babazadeh is my grandparents last name who immigrated to U.S. in early 1990s. Babazadeh in persian means "born to the Baba family".
There are still a few Babazadehs left in Iran. This is a Jewish last name in Iran. That is why you have traced it back back to Iraq.
If you want to go furthur back in time, you should study the history of Iranian Jews who were taken for slavery (originally) from Jerusalim by King Koroush (if not mistaken).
There is another theory that says, the origions of Iranian Jews goes back to Spain. But, I believe the first theory is older.
You are on the right track. Let me know if I can be of furthur assistance.
P.S. I will check back for any responses from you.
Baba surname

I am searching for an Abraham T. Baba who was 29 years old in 1918- he was somewhere in Mercer County, PA in the Sandy Lake area in November of 1917. His nationality is listed on my grandmother's birth certificate as Armenian, but his name is not the Armenian form of Baba, which would be Babayan or Babaian.
Are there any Baba surname individuals out there who may have more info on where I can look for this individual? My father was adopted, and his mother (daughter of Abraham T Baba) also never knew his identity. I only found this out 3 months ago when attempting the family genealogy. Please email me if you can help!
Thanks Again-
Ronda Snyder

Hello,

My Assyrian ancestors were from the villages of Urmia, Persia. I have been told that they lived in Diza or Deza and Ardishai (sp?). Previous to this they resided in Iraq [Mesopotamia].

They escaped Persia during the genocides during WWI era and came to Ellis Island, stayed in NY a short time and settled in Philadelphia.
origins of "Baba" surname

My father is from Lebanon, the surname is not uncommon in the northern city of Tripoli ("Tarablus" in Arabic). I understand that the origins are North African. David Baba is correct that "Baba" in colloquial Arabic means father; however, another meaning is "the Pope" (an odd name for a Muslim family).

Baba connection

You will find that Baba means father and was used for relatives first names. It has middle eastern origins. My ancestry is from Urmia in persia and came from Russia(or somewhere in that region). I myself am Assyrian from Iraq. You will find many Assyrians have the surname of Baba taken from there great grandparents(in which Baba was their first name!(This was the usual custom in those days making it virtually imposible to trace ones specific ancestry)).

Maria (Baba) Stoica

Am looking for any info about my Grandmother, born Maria Baba, from Vestem, Romania. While in Romania, she married Eli Stoica, from the village of Mohu, Romania, and had 2 children, Eli and Maria (yes, I guess they named their children after themselves!). I had visited Vestem, Romania, in 1977, and was allowed to view her former home by the current occupant but couldn't find anything more on her family. My Grandmother, emigrated to USA, following her husband, Eli, in the early 1900's. She planned on going back to Romania, but never did. They had 2 more children here and settled in North Grosvenordale, CT.

I'd appreciate any information! Thank you.
