Re: John Babb who married Sarah Bowen in Iowa 1850

Sarah's last name is actually Rowan not Bowen. John Babb was a brother to my great great grandmother Mariah Babb Gardner. His parents were William Beal Babb and Elizabeth McCoy. I have John having 6 children, Mary, Thomas, Samuel, Sarah, John and Amanda who died as an infant. I show them in Leavenworth County Kansas in 1859, 1860, 1865 and 1870. John was in the military and living on the post in 1865 with his family.
On the 1859 Kansas census, John indicated he had been in Kansas since 1858. On the 1865 census John, Peter and Charles Rowan were also living with John and Sarah Babb. I think these may be her brothers.
John was born December 17, 1823 in Fleming County, Kentucky. Sarah was born about 1828 in Tennessee. They were married in Iowa. They were last on the 1856 Iowa census.

Michelle, you should contat Elfreide Wilde at elfie@windstream.net. She has written a book about the Eitel family and can answer almost all of your questions. Her records, therefore, are more complete than mine, as I only have the family re Jacob Frederich Eitel. I know she'll be happy to help. She's a sweet lady.

Another update:
We drove to AZ and my husband and his father and a brother met for the first time. It was totally awesome! My husband looks exactly like his dad. It is so neat to see them together. They even move the same and wear the same style of clothes. We had a great time, although it was short. His father, brother and the family are super cool people and we had a real good time with them. We are planning another get together for his dad's 70th birthday in October 2009.Maybe the men will go fishing.

To "dad", his lovely wife and and to my hubby's brother and the rest of the family, we love you and are so glad to have met you all. Looking forward to many happy memories together.

Love US

Very interesting, we are in the UK and traced our family back to the 1700's,the name is rare in Buckinghamshire, but there seems to be a larger community in North Devon UK, which given that this was a trading port with the US would open the possiblities of a travelling Babb from here in the UK to the US in times gone by. Good luck with your search, possibly tracing back to the UK my help find the line to your part of our shared name.

Michael Babb [UK]

Hi there
I have a George Babb in my family, my Grandfather and Great grandfather, both had the name Walter as well. To the best of my knowledge they were born in Somerset. However, I have a photo of them with a brother of george Jr that was taken in
South Shields so know they were not always in the south. George the younger was born feb. 1890 and the elder c june 1861/62.
If you think this can be of relevance let me know and I will see if I can help.
All the best Carol Webster/Babb
We met his dad, his dad's wife, his brother and his brother's wife and three of their four kids. We had a real nice visit and plan to keep in touch often and see each other more. My hubby is so happy about this all. I think he smiled all the way home. He even took pictures in to his job to show off his new family to the guys.I am so glad I was able to help find my hubby's family. SOmething had always been missing and now that is being filled. The family is real cool and down to earth. Just like us. We love hubby's new family already...

Volume IV of "The James C. Babb Sr. Family of Nansemond County, Virginia and Descendents" by Gordon. Otis Parker, Jr., g-g-grandson of James C. Babb, Sr., b. 1794, d. Abt 1859, lists all of the children of James C. Babb, Sr. as;
- Nathaniel Babb, b. 1826, d. 1904
- Sarah Babb, b. 1828
- Elizabeth Babb, b. 1829
- William K. Babb, b. 1830
- Margaret Jane Babb, b. 1834, d. 1888
- George Washington Babb, b. 1836, d. 1911
- Frances Virginia Babb, b. 1840
- James C. Babb, Jr., b. 1842
- Texanna Babb, b. 1844
- Robert Edwin Babb, b. 1848, d. 1924
- Thomas Walter Babb, b. 1849, d. 1908

His wife was Cynthia Jones, b. 1810, d. 1873

There is really not room for your Susan Ann Jones to fit in as an unknown daughter so I suggest that she was living with the Dempsey Babb family as a servant in 1850 and that her parents really were James and Cinthy Jones.

It is possible that she was related to the Cynthia Jones that married James C. Babb, but difficult to determine. The volume cited notes that the mother of Cynthia Jones was Mary "Polly" Jones, but her father's name is not known.

Gordon Otis Parker Jr. is a very god source for Nansemond Babb information. If you are interested, write to me directly and I will give you his contact information.

James C. Babb family of Nansemond Co., VA

I'm trying to find out how this Susan Ann JONES fits into this BABB family.

Finding her in the 1850 census living with the BABB family, I thought maybe she had previously been married to a Mr. Jones. Then I found the marriage license below which lists her as single and her parents as James & Cinthy JONES, not BABB. Could she have lied on her license???

Also, somewhere I thought I saw that her mother's maiden name was JONES, but can no longer locate the source of that information.

Other than references to a book by G. O. Parker, I can find very little information about this family online.

If anyone can clarify this, I would be very grateful.

1850 Nov 9 census - Nansemond Co., VA:
#1 - BABB, Demsey (male) age 30; Christian (fem) age 38); JONES, Susan (fem) age 16; BABB, Sarah (fem) age 2.
#2 - BABB, James, C. Sr (male) age 56; Cinthia (fem) age 40; Nathaniel (male) age 24; Sarah (fem) age 22; Elizabeth (fem) age 21; William H. (male) age 20; Margaret J. (fem) age 16; George W. (male) age 14; Frances V. (fem) age 10; James C. (male ) age 8; Texanna (fem) age 6; Robert E. (male) age 1. All born VA.

1856, Oct 15 - License #A1132:
Groom: HITCHINGS, William George, age 29, widow, b. Princess Anne Co., VA, Parents: William & Elizabeth Hitchings
Bride: JONES, Susan Ann, age 21, single, b. Nansemond Co., VA. Parents: James & Cinthy Jones
Ref: Norfolk County Virginia Marriage Licenses 1850-1899 vol 1, p 96

I am so sorry, I didnt see this before now.I never was notified...

Can you please ask your dad if he knew Ray Hogan (his best friend) and Darlene Hogan? If Ray Hogan was your dad's friend, back in the early 60's, then you have a brother born in January, 1962......

Here are some possibilites............

1 - Mother was a Babb who married Jones, something happened to the Jones & the Babbs took her in
2 - Neighbor's orphan child who the Babbs took in
3 - Christian Babb could be her Mother & she could be from a previous marriage

Usually boarders & servants are listed after family members.

It's really hard to tell on an 1850 Census.

Good Luck!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MICHELLE GREGG
I passed your message on to my mother Joan and her sister Phyllis along with your email address. Joan is pretty good with email so you should be hearing from her shortly. Phyllis's adopted son Larry is the only one that still lives in the Midwet. They are in the Rockford IL area. They have 4 kids that all live in the area. You can reach me at daly.jay@comcast.net and my mom at jandjcd5th@cox.net.
Re: Babb families in Tenn, Texas & Leake County, MS!
My Great Grandmother's maiden name was Laura Babb, quite a bit of the information I have found which other people have listed is incorrect. My sister and I have traced the Babb family in Texas back to Coryell, County (Gatesville and Copperas Cove). There is a small town there called Pancake, it was once named Babbsville, but because some of the Babbs were outlaws, they were run out of town and the name changed. Laura Babb met a man from Victoria, Texas, name Homer Tippett and accompanied him to Tom Green County, Texas, where he became a cattle baron. She passed away from disease in the early 1920's. Also, the date of her daughter, June Tippett is incorrect, she passed away 30 Dec, 2006 in Dallas, Texas. I am just begining my geneology quest, so I'm not sure what "protocol" to use, but the above information is correct.
Re: Babb in Mexico
The Walter Babb Story Continues
Walter Dillard “Dixie” Babb was born 11 June 1919 in Val Verde County, Texas, and died 18 November 1993 in Valentine, Jeff Davis County, Texas. Dixie was the eldest son of Walter Isaac Babb and Jewel Wilson (Border Healing Woman). He married Mae Edna Overton 4 June 1942. I have found no mention of children of this union.
According to Jewel, Dixie and two of his brothers were involved, with others, in stealing horses or cattle in Mexico and bringing them into Texas to sell. The gang was apprehended and the two brothers were sentenced to prison in Texas. However, on advice of his lawyer, Dixie fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution. While there he had an affair with a married woman and in an argument with her husband shot and killed the man. Jewel says that he spent about twelve years in a Mexican prison. Is it possible that this is the Walter who left children in Durango, Mexico? Was the argument because the woman was pregnant? Since he was the same age as my father, he could certainly have grown grandchildren now.
I have read an account of a massive jail-break, in Mexico, involving a number of US citizens that took place about the time Dixie was there. A few of the men escaped, some were executed, and others were returned to prison. I do not know that Dixie was involved; although, there is a possibility that he was. It would make a very romantic story if he visited the woman during the jail-break and again before leaving Mexico. Jewel does not say whether he returned to Texas when he was released or may have stayed there a while. I would be interested to know when the Babb’s were born in Mexico.
Walter is said to have married (2) Pauline Sanchez, no date given; but, it must have been after his return from Mexico. Two children are named.
