Babbs in New Zealand...

Esther Bradshaw married the following:
M1. Thomas Babb, Mar.1857, Stafford, Staffordshire (6b/3)
M2. John Wheavel, Jun.1876, Newport, Shropshire (6a/1533)
M3. George Taylor, circa 1885, Auckland, New Zealand

Following her marriage to John Wheavel in 1876, Esther and her children Thomas, Alfred and Rachel (Babb) all departed England on the ship Hydaspes and sailed from Plymouth on 10 August 1878 and arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand on 9th November 1878:

Wheavel, John (31, Staffordshire, Farm Labourer), Esther (38), Thomas (16), Alfred (12), Rachael (8).

I have also found an online entry (homepages.ihug.co.nz/~taylgl34/jtaysta.html) showing that Esther married again in New Zealand: George Taylor, born: 1840 in London and married in 1885 in Auckland, New Zealand to Esther Wheavel. George died on 30 October 1930 in Auckland. No further details are given for Esther.

I would love to find out what became of the Babb children and to trace any descendants, or information....

Here's hoping...

David

Sarah A. Babb married Joseph Turner 2-20-1850 Robertson Co. TN to TX

Is anyone researching this couple? I believe they are on the 1850 Census of Robertson Co. TN--still not children.

1850 Census, Robertson Co. TN, District 2
(image 16 on Ancestry.com images)
Turner, Joseph-----30 M--Farmer----KY [born c 1820]
Sarah A.-----------24 F------------TN

1860 they appear to be in Dallas Co. TX

1860 Census, Dallas Co. TX, Prct. 1
#1084
Joseph Turner------41 M---Farmer-----KY [born c 1819]
Sarah A.-----------30 F--------------TN
Jos or Jas. D------9 M---------------TN
Marion J.----------7 M---------------TN
Alonzo A.----------5 M---------------TN
H. J. Newell-----40 M Teacher--------PA

In both 1850 and 1860 there were some slaves in the household.

I checking the households of Turners in Robertson Co. TN, none of them had any slaves. But the Babb living near the Turners did own slaves.

Now the big question. Was this really the same Joseph and Sarah A. Turner? I couldn't find any others that appear to be the correct couple in 1860 other than the couple in Dallas, TX.

What happened to Joseph and Sarah A. Babb Turner? I can't turn them up in 1870.

However, there is a Joseph O. Turner [born c 1830 KY] who is on the Dallas Co. TX census in 1870 and although his age is off from the Joseph Turner of 1860, he does have a Scott Turner living with him--a mulatto male who matches the age of one of the mulatto slaves living with Joseph in 1860. This Joseph O. Turner is a little too young to be the Joseph who married Sarah Babb in Robertson Co. TN unless perhaps this is a second marriage and the wife gave the information and didn't really know how old Joseph was.

Joseph O. Turner's wife is Martha Frances Huffines and living in her father's household (William Huffines) are two other mulatto Turner young men who are believed to be related to Scott Turner.

A problem exists in that none of the children with Joseph and Sarah A. Turner in 1860 are with Joseph O. Turner and wife Martha Huffines.

So, I don't know if these are the same two Joseph Turners or not.

If any one knows anything about Joseph Turner who married Sarah Ann Babb can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Gail

Graves of Thomas MCNABB and Kessiah BABB--Worthington, PA

A grand find for me today--a record of the gravesites of my third great-grandparents, Thomas McNabb and his wife Kessiah (sometimes, Keziah) Babb in the United Presbyterian Cemetery of Worthington, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. No dates are recorded for Thomas (he died prior to the 1850 census); and the dates recorded for Kessiah are 1801-1868.

The source for this information was a typed record in the Public Library of Butler, Pennsylvania--a few miles west of Worthington--and the gravestone readings were made in August 1978. A distinction is made between this cemetery and the Worthington Presbyterian Cemetery, which is noted as being the cemetery of the "first" Presbyterian Church there, located on Cherry Street. A warm weather search, perhaps, will locate the markers, if they still are standing.

The McNabbs were the parents of Mexican and Civil War soldier John Babb McNabb (about 1824-1893), who married Elizabeth B. Williams; and their daughter, Margaret McNabb Bowser, was my great-grandmother.

Kessiah Babb was the daughter of John Babb (1768-1829) and Rebecca Caster (1769-abt. 1851).
Laurence Eugene Babb (ME, MA, IL?) - seeking information

Laurence Eugene Babb ("Larry") was my grandfather, and what became of him has always been a mystery to our family. He was born in Maine, and I believe his parents were George Babb and Elizabeth Mayo, although I have been unable to find documentation on them. Larry married Josephine Iannello in Boston in 1934. They had two children - Charlie and Larry Jr. Sometime in the early fifties Larry disappeared. We have heard that he may have been in Chicago in the mid sixties, but I have not been able to confirm this. I also know that he was a Sargent in the army for many years as an enlistment officer, and he also served in Korea.

I would be extremely grateful for any information you might have about his family background or about where he might have spent the latter part of his life. Thank you so much.

Candice-Leigh Baumgardner (Babb)

I am searching for my cousin Darlene whose mother's name was Bernice. I am attempting to match Darlene's born in California in 1932-1934 to a mother whose name was Bernice.
The California Birth Index gives the mother's maiden name but not a given name. My Uncle worked in a cannery between 1930 and 1933-34. I have verified that he was in Coulterville area in about 1934. Darlene May Babb was born in Tulare County. I have a photo of Bernice and Darlene that looks like it was taken in Santa Barbara near the pier. Bernice would be of Portuguese descent. Any suggestions or connections you can make would be greatly appreciated. Or if this Darlene can be ruled out as a possibility.
I'm interested in making connections with anyone connected to or researching the Babb families of Summit County, Ohio. I'm particularly interested in connecting David Babb born abt. 1777 in Pennsylvania. He's on the 1850 census in Summit County with a Joseph and Elizabeth Babb. I presume that Joseph is David's son. Not positive. I've followed this line through but can't get David connected. Hope someone can help.

Looking for information on Cortez Babb, aka Cort.

I know that I have seen this name on the net; however, it did not seem relevant at the time and I did not record it (Big Mistake!). Now, all I can get is the message: “No matching records found.”

He is supposed to be the son of John Scarff Babb (d. 1883) and the brother of T.A. “Dot” Babb (1852-1936).

On the US Census for 1860, Wise Co., Texas, I found:
John S. Babb 42 Ohio
Isabella A. 32 “
Fernando C. 10 Wisconsin
Theodore A. 8 “
Bianca L. 3 Indian Territory

This is the next household following that of Strother B.
Looking for Elton R. Babb

Hi, I am looking for Elton R. Babb. I know he used to live in Southern California in 1961. He will be in his 60's.(If still living)
He had a friend named Ray Hogan.
I'm not looking to cause any trouble. You see...Elton has a 40 year old son (born in January 1962) that he may not know about.
He is my husband of 20 years. He does not know about Elton...yet.
My husband's mother wished to tell her son, but would like to find Elton first.(she does not wish to contact him personally, just for me to find him) If you are him or know him, please let me know. If you wish not to know your son, it's okay, just let me know anyway. At least I'd like to get some family history, like health concerns, etc.
Elton may have moved back to Arizona.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so very much.

I would be interested in learning/contacting any family of the surviving children of Thomas Edward Babb (1860) and Eliza Annie Simpson (1861).
Thomas died in December 1900 and Eliza in March 1901 after the birth of daughter Sarah, who survived.
Of their other children, Ada (1897) and Thomas Edward (1899) were adopted by the Farrell family. Thomas is my Grandfather and I know Ada married and lived in the Coventry area.
I would love to know what happened to their siblings: Elsie (1894) and Edith Mary (1895).
I would also like to know what happened to the children from Thomas Edward's first marriage to Mary Ann Payne (1866-1891), who were Annie Elizabeth (1889) and Ralph (1891).
Any leads/information gratefully received.
In anticipation
David Farrell
William Henry Babb, b. 1850 IA, d. 1912, Medicine Hat, Canada

William Henry Babb was b. June 9, 1850 in Des Moines county, Iowa. He was the son of John Babb and Marilla Barton. He died in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada in May 1912.

His first marriage was to Hannah, and they had a son William, b. abt. 1859 in Oregon. I think he had at least 3 sons by this marriage. In 1880 he was in Umatilla Landing, Oregon. in 1892 he is in Echo, Oregon and has a famous race horse named Guido, for which he was offered $15,000, but declined. In 1900 he is in Umatilla county, Oregon, but has a new wife, he is 49 and his wife Margrette, is 25. In 1903 he sells his ranch in Oregon to his cousin, Morillo Gillette. August of 1903 he moves, by rail, from Oregon to Medicine Hat, 28 carloads of horses. The horses were owned by him and a gentleman by the last name of Stark.

William had a brother, George Washington Babb, who also moved to Canada. The rest of the family stayed in the Spokane or Whitman county area in WA state. I would love to have more information on William.

Babbs in Stoddard Co. MO Some Questions

My gg grandmother was Elizabeth Babb Tankersley daughter of William M. Babb and Temperance Shipman. There was also a Philip Babb born ca 1800 living in Stoddard County. Apparently they both had sons named Andrew Jackson Babb and they lived next to each other so it is difficult to untangle the families. Some of the items on WorldConnect seem to mix them together.

We know from Phillip's will that he had a son Andrew who was named as his administrator in 1871. However when the will was probated in 1875 Andrew had died. There was a Jackson Babb living two doors from Phillip in 1850. He had a wife named Rhoda. They were in New Madrid Co. at the 1870 census and had sons Thomas and Washington. In 1880, Rhoda is a widow Rhoda Conover living with son Wash Babb. So, this Andrew Jackson seems to be the son of Phillip. One census says Andrew was born in MO but two others say Tennessee which is where Phillip came from.

In 1850, another, 18 year old Andrew J. Babb, born in MO, is living with the family of Daniel and Narcissa (Babb) Bland. Andrew has wife Eliza and 1 year old daughter Mary. In 1860 bothe Andrew and Eliza are gone and 11 year old Mary and 7 year old Martha are still living with the Blands. Daniel Bland and Narcissa Babb were married in Perry Co. IL 16 Jan 1834. Who is this Narcissa? What is her relationship to Andrew?

Next, we have Andrew Jackson "A J" Babb married Lucy A. M. Long 22 May 1864 in Madison Co. IL and Andrew died there in 1867. Lucy took here children Joseph David Babb and went to Dallas Co. MO near Buffalo where William M. Babb and Temperance Shipman's son David Walden Babb is living. So, I would say this is the son of William M.

Is this the same Andrew who was in Cedar Co. in 1850? Is Narcissa another child of William M. Babb.

It is in many records now that William's middle name was Matthew. Is there any proof of that? His mother was Sarah Morrow. Couldn't he have been named for her father?

Ted Stout

Emanuel M. Babb of TN > WA

I am doing research for a friend and I have found his great grandfather but I cannot discover his great grandmother's name. The father, Emanuel Babb, is listed in the 1900 census as a widower with three children, William (15), Margaret (8), and Martha (6). He must have remarried shortly after the census because in 1910 he is married to a Laura Reynolds and living in Colfax, Washington with his new family (5 kids then, 11 by 1930). The 1900 census lists him as living in Civil District No. 16, Greene County, TN. What city is that? Does anyone know any more about Emanuel and his family? Unfortunately without the 1890 census I am stumped!
Becky

Have just discovered an on-line obit for Pat Stewart the wife of Dean Stewart and the daughter of Walter Babb and Ruth Brewster-Babb. Walter Babb was my grandfather's brother.
The obit states that she is survived by a sister, Ann Hartman. I do not have this name in my data base; however, I do have a Elizabeth Ann Babb who married Joe Long. Could this be the same person?
I would like to get in touch with any descendants of Walter Babb. I have 2 or 3 pictures of Walter and Ruth and would be glad to provide copies.

E-mail me at jlmcc@hbeark.com

William and Mary Jane are my great-grandparents. Info I have received is mostly from Greene Co. TN.
Any information is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Patty
Babb-McConaughy Marriages

My father's name was Chester Leo McConaughy (1919-1983) and my mother's name was Frances Lorene Babb (1920-1984).
I know that there have been other marriages between these two families. If you have any ancestors with these names, I would love to hear from you; we may be related somehow!
Both of these names can be traced back to Pennsylvania. However; they are now to be found in almost every state.
The McConaughy name has many spelling variations, some related and some not.
If there is enough interest, it might be possible to create a web-page.

Book, "Babb Families of America" by Jean Sargent

Jean Sargents book, "Babb Families of America" is no longer sold by Jean Sargent.

I've had a copy of her Third Edition since her last publishing date of 2000 and in contact with her via telephone and snailmail (she didn't use a computer). Jean was helping me with my Babb family research when she began to lose her health and eyesight.

She told me that she was going into the hospital for eye surgery. After she had recooperated, she wrote that her eyes were not any better and growing worse each day as was her health in general. She no longer could see well enough to do her genealogy work which disappointed her very much.

Also, being an artist, she was no longer able to paint which compounded her disappointment. She felt she had no other choice but to find a care facility. The last letter I received she had found a place but didn't say where and was ready to move there.

I tried contacting her but the phone had been disconnected and all my mail was returned unopened. I do not know if she is still living but her last letter to me was dated in February 2001.

Perhaps someone has taken over her genealogy work and would know if there are books still available for sale? If so, please leave a message on the Babb Message Board for others to read. Some are still asking to purchase copies of her book. Also, perhaps you can update us on whether Jean is still living.

Thank you.

missing link

My Dad was Anderson Carter Babb. Born in 1893 in Greene Co Tenn (Greenville). His father's name was Archibald Crawford Babb and his mother's name was Mary Callie Hunt. His brothers were named Charles, Hobart, Samuel, and sisters Jessie, Francis, and Minnie. There was another sister Lucy that dissapeared on a train ride to Memphis some time before 1907 when the family relocated to Grapevine, Texas. My Dad was 50 years old when I was born, so I never got to know that side of my family very well. I do remember hearing the name Turner. There was an Anderson Carter Babb born in 1822 and another in 1840 (died in 1894). I think my Dad must have been named after them, but I can't make the connection. Does anyone have a clue? He loved Tennesee and always talked about how they would sleep in the barn loft where the tobacco was being cured, so my Grandfather must have been a farmer. I appreciate any help as I am new to this research.

BABB in PA, IN, MO

WILLIAM BABB, which is Joann and David's great-grandfather, was married to Barbara Bast. William date is unknown, but Barbara Bast was born about 1863 and they married on Aug 6, 1885 in Spencer County, IN. Witness in their marriage was her father, CHRISTIAN BAST. William and Barbara have two known children, ARTHUR LEO BABB and MABEL BABB. Interesting, Arthur and Mabel are found in a 1900 Indiana Census, both children are listed, but not in the household of William. They are listed as a niece and nephew of another family, name not ledgible.

ARTHUR LEO BABB married MARYANN ROSS on 12 Jun 1886 in Eureka, IN and together they had two children, Barbara Alice Babb and Ernest Leo Babb. Arthur Babb was born in Eureka, IN on June 12, 1886 to the parents of WILLIAM BABB and BARBARA BAST. Arthur went to Deepwater about 1900 and soon after his arrival married Maryann. Arthur was engaged in the mercantile business for several years but traded his store for a farm near El Dorado Springs where he moved about 1925. He returned to Deepwater after four months. Most of the time while he lived in Deepwater, Arthur had employment at the Dickey Plant. Arthur passed away on February 15, 1927 and Maryann died on November 27, 1918.

Any information on these individuals would be greatly appreciated.
BABB - NEWSPAPERS

Hi: For some time now, I have been typing Barry Co., MO, newspaper items. I now have posted the years 1890 through 1913. And in among the listings there were a lot of Babb surnames.

I am typing on the 1914 ones now and when I have the project finished it will go through 1921. But there are already a lot of papers listed and tons of information that will interest researchers of Barry Co., MO and the surrounding areas.

There is a search engine on the front page, and you will probably need it - but if you just want to walk through them, then just go down the page and you will see listed the Barry Co., MO Newspaper project.

Here is the link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~haddockfamily/index...

Donna
