He stowed away on a ship to escape compulsory military training in Germany. Charles married Minnie Mary Margaret Liesenberg in Omaha on July 17th, 1885. Charles had a brother named August Babbel who immigrated to the US in 1888, who lived in Wood Lake, Cherry, Nebraska. Charles' marriage record lists his father as Fritz Babbel. On the 1900 census for Wood Lake, Cherry, Nebraska, his mother Wilhelmia said she was widowed, and had 5 living children. I only know of two - Charles and August.
