I hear the ancestors were from a village near the town of Bileca in Hertzegowina (region of Bosnia). I've heard of the same surname at different ppls in the Balkans. Babic - orthodox Serbs, Babic - catholic Croatian, Babic - muslim Bosnians and Babich - Slovenian (since they don't have 'c (ty), just ch in their language). I've also heard of some hungarian writer Mihalj Babics of serbian origin. I'm currently living in Trstenik, central Serbia, where the Babic's moved to some 150 yrs ago. They came from a mountainous region of Goc and Zeljin in Serbia. I've been to the place, many Babic's there, some with croatian-like names, but all orthodox. I've heard of some mythological stories and stuff about how the family was created, in the time of the turkish-rule of Hertzegowina (never been there, though). Hint: when tracking serbian family genealogy, be 95% sure that the families with the same surname and same Slava (patron saint) are related. For example, my family's (in Trstenik) Slava is St. Triphun, same as the one's in the village of Ploche, beneath the mountains of Goc and Zeljin. Families can be related even if not with the same patron saint (due to the changing of patron saints) or can even be related with some muslim families in Bosnia (due to the conversions).
