You might try the Milton Babich, age 79, who lives in Mathews NC, My wife is Linda L. Birmingham/Breit, daughter of Joseph Birmingham, son of George V., brother of your grandfather Albert. You must be named after your aunt. I have done some genealogy work on the Birminghams which I can share with you. I am well aware of the family tragedy that surrounds Kathleen.

Is this your George BABICH?

1930 Manville NJ census

Name Age
George A Babich 43 arr US 1907 Russian
Mary Babich 35 arr US 1906 Russian
Helen Babich 17 all children born PA
Mary Babich 14
Julia Babich 12
Verna Babich 11
Elisabeth Babich 9
Anna Babich 7
Andy Babich 5
Georege Babich 1 1/12
Andy Babich 78 father

It appears the above family lived near Pittsburgh in 1920 in Indiana County. And then I see some of the family members in the Social Security Death Index having recieved their cards in Manville NJ. If they are the above family then the name CHABRA may have actually been spelled CSABRA and Mary would have originally been Maria.

It is likely they were NOT Russian rather they were Carpatho-Rusyns, a people which live in Eastern Slovakia, western Ukraine, SE Poland and parts of Eastern Croatia and N. Serbia. Typically they are Greek Rite Catholics aka Byzantine Rite but many converted to the Orthodox religion in America.

Or is this your George?

WW II Draft Registration
Name: George Andrew Babich
Birth Date: 15 Mar 1887
RESIDENCE: Somerset, New Jersey
Birth: Csumalevo, Austria Hungary
Wife Mary

What was their ethnicity?

I don't know if this will help, but my Grandmother was Juliana Babich who came to the US around 1910. She was still unmarried and had to be "sponsored" so perhaps this could be her brother. She settled in Slidington, perhaps 100 miles from Philadelphia. Her father was John Babich from the town of Yenovitz (sp?) of Austria-Hungary. Let me know if this helps.

Re: Babich, Babic

I found out some information recently and it seems some of the details in my previous posting are not correct.

My grandfather, Marcos Babich, passed away last year in Chile. It turns out that he had his father's birth certificate which stated that my great-grandfather, same name or a close variation of Marcos Babich (possibly Marco Babich, Babic), was born in California. I don't know the date but based on estimated ages I figured somewhere between 1890-1905.

As I said, there was a birth certificate however it has been "lost" since then. My father did not see it and has no specific details.

The rest of the story is accurate in terms of my great-grandfathers brother, I believe Simon Babich (or close variation). Also my uncle's visit was more than 20 years ago. The relative of Simon Babich visited may have been Simon's son because according to my uncle, the gentleman looked just like my grandfather (Marcos Babich), and therefore he could have been my grandfather's cousin.

I have a picture of my grandfather which I can share if anyone would like to swap pictures. There should be some similarities from what my uncle said about his visit.

Thanks again.

Best,
Claudia D. Babich

Ana-Maria,

Perhaps you did not understand what I was referring to in my subsequent posts. Serbo-Croatian is a slavic language. It is the dominant language spoken in what used to be the country of Yugoslavia - The Republic of Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Serbian and Croatian, are based on two distinct dialects. Ekavian, which is the basis of "Serbian" and Ijekavian, which is the basis of "Croatian". In 1954, Serbian, Croatian, and Montenegrin writers, scholars and linguists met in the city of Novi Sad and composed the Novi Sad Resolutions which declared Serbo-Croatian one language and attempted to resolve differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and orthography. After the Novi Sad resolutions, official dictionaries and orthographies for the Serbo-Croatian language were published. Four other languages had official and equal status in the country as well. Those languages were: Slovenian, Albanian, Hungarian, and Macedonian. Serbo-Croatian is spoken as a first language by three quarters of the population and as a second language by most of the rest. Serbo-Croatian is spoken by a total of about 20 million speakers. In the former Yugoslavia there are a little over 10 million speakers; in Croatia there are almost 5.5 million; and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a million and a half. There are large numbers of speakers of Serbo-Croatian, between 1 hundred to 2 hundred thousand, in Canada and the USA respectively. Smaller communities, numbering in the low tens of thousands, are found in Austria, Hungary, and Turkey. There are also speakers of Serbo-Croatian in Czechoslovakia and Greece.

If you have any other questions concerning Yugoslavia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina or the Serbo-Croatian language I am more than happy to explain them to you.

~Paul Babich
Austin, Texas

No, there are no towns or cities with the name of "Babich" (Babic') in Serbia or Croatia. I'm not familiar with the town of Zolotaryovo. If it is very small town it could be difficult to locate even using a map. That part of the Balkans is scattered with small towns of only a hundred people or less and they generally are not included on maps of the country. But your mention of "the borders were always changing" is interesting because that is exactly the case in Yugoslavia. The border between Serbia and Croatia have been redrawn so many times no one can say with any certainty where the original border was. As a result of this there are Serbians who live in Croatia and Croatians who live in Serbia. Whenever these two ethnic groups start shooting at each other it's these people who really get it in the neck. What was home only a few months earlier suddenly becomes very hostile and deadly territory. And Bosnia-Herzegovina is an even bigger mess when it comes to drawing ethinc territories and borders.

As far as country of origin being possibly Austria and Slovakia. The Austro-Hungarian Empire controlled a great portion of the Balkans during the 1880s and the territory of Croatia was part of that until the end of World War I. The politics and conflicts in this part of the word are indeed confusing so it could be possible that they immigrated through Austria or Slovakia and then on through to Russia before coming to the United States. But in regards to the spelling of the name; most immigrants added an "S" or "CH" at the end so it would be pronounced in english as it was prounaunced in Serbo-Croatian.

~Paul Babich
Not necessarily Croatian

The Babich name is not necessarily a Croatian name. My name is Paul Babich, my father emigrated to the United States from Serbia in 1946 after Yugoslavia was taken over by the Communists. I have a large extended family in Serbia proper, they have been there for literally hundreds of years. The original spelling of the name is: Babic'. In the Serbo-Croatian language the letter "C" can be pronounced as either an "S" or hard "C" or "CH". the hyphen above the "C" indicates the soft "CH" pronunciation.
Many Yugoslav immigrants (my dad included) added the "H" to the end of the name so it would be pronounced properly in english. But you will find the Babich name in both Serbia and Croatia. It is not exclusive to either area.

~Paul Babich,
Austin, Texas

The name in our family is now spelled "Babish", but I have found documents with the immigrant ancestor using the spelling "Babich" and also "Babych."

Parents of Charles Wesley Babich (b. 1880, arrived ~1900)were Wasil Babych and Sofy Patkan. He was born in "ZOLOTARYOVO" (sp?) "Chechsl" - no idea where that is today - he said the borders were always changing - also found country of origin written as "Austria" and "Slovakia" in different sources for him. Could also be Zolotarjovo - handwritting hard to figure out.

Family stories say they went through St. Petersburg to get to the US... from Austria?? This region confuses me to no end.
