Irish Babingtons

I am curious about other Irish Babington families. My Babington family is from Magheracloone in southeast Co. Monaghan. I am aware of Babington's in Northern Ireland, Co. Donegal, and Co. Cork. I know the Co. Donegal and Co. Cork Babingtons go much further back in time then what I have been able to trace with my Magheracloone Babingtons. I wonder what the relationships might be of the different Babingtons families in Ireland. I suspect only a DNA study would reveal what if any relationship the different Irish Babington families in Ireland might have.

Hi Lennie. We may be related through Edward Babington & Ann Lake,(or Luke). My great grandfather was Richard Lawson Babington who was born in Boston Union Workhouse, (abt 1860), and the son of Susannah Babington, who was one of the daughters of Edward & Ann and a sister of Benjanmin Lake Babington. Richard Babington moved to Sheffield, South Yorkshire and married an Emily Coates on 20-04-1890, they moved onto Leeds, West Yorkshire sometime in the late 1890's, where most of the family are still settled. if you think there is a connection, it would be great to hear from you.
Regards
Dave Babington.

My wife Carolyn Ann SPENCE (Nee Perkins) is the 4th Great granddaughter of William Babington. His daughter Elizabeth married George Davis. And it goes on. I have approximately 120 A4 pages of descendants of John De Babington back to 1220. If you would like a copy I can post you one but I would need your address. I have in the past been in touch with Lorraine Money and Bill Leaver and we each have similar info. Do not appear to have anything on your line but would certainly appreciate anything you have. I started doing this in 1987 and am still going. Kind regards
Barry Spence

They lived at 352 South 1st. St. I don't know if it is the same Lorenzo that you are looking for, but I bet it is.

I only very recently discovered the Babington family and my connection to them, so I have not done a whole lot of research on them. I try to stay away from the Brooklyn Web Pages because you can lose days and days in there! I went in this morning to see the article you were referring to when Tessie and Fannie had their spat, and lost the whole morning! Yes, Tessie and Fannie are my Babingtons, and that incident took place a mere two months before their sister Evelyn died from Pulmonary Phthysis (whatever that is). Incidentally, Mabel died from heart disease and Margaret died of TB. I am pretty sure Joseph Jr. didn't die until 1992. I lost Florence (Fannie) after she married Arthur Robert in 1937, and I lost Theresa at the same time when she was a witness for Fannie's marriage.

Fooling around in the Brooklyn Web Pages I did find Lorenzo in the 1897 Lain's Directory as a pilot. The address was 122 S. First St.

You can contact me directly if you wish at mcanzler@hotmail.com. That might be easier for both of us.

Re: Babington Family in NY area

I remember seeing a death date for Mabel and wondering if it was the same girl. The www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com site has a few snippets about Babingtons as well. I'm going to have to look and see if I have a copy of that reference to Mabel though. The fact that she was born in 1906 seems familiar, but it may be because that was the year my grandmother was born. With my grandmother's connection to the Babingtons, I remember wondering if they might have known each other. There's a good chance they did, despite my mom insisting she knew of a Mabel Babington. My mom was born in the thirties, so that doesn't rule out the connection, since Mabel had passed away by then. Unfortunately, I've had to go to my mom for information, since my grandmother has now long since passed away.

The Brooklyn GenWeb site I mention above has an article or two about two sisters, Fannie and Tessie Babington, who were involved in an auto accident. http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Newspaper/BSU/1931.News.... Were they also daughters of Joseph and Theresia? We had a Theresa in our family who went by "Tess," so that makes sense. Could "Fannie" be Florence? There's a follow-on article at http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Court/1931.Court.April.M... as well. As for that article on Mabel, I remember it wasn't very long, and I only looked at it in passing. When I find it, I'll pass it on. There's a good chance the article was in the Brooklyn Standard Union. If you take a look through the articles from that time period, you might get the impression they wrote up something over every scrape or broken bone that happened in Brooklyn on any given day. Then again, you had a lot of people living rather close to one another, and, with all the ferries, ice trucks, horses, etc., every day was an adventure. I imagine a baby falling out a window and surviving kept people talking for a while.

Medieval Babingtons

Two John Babingtons fought for Richard III at Bosworth in 1485 AFAIK

John Babington (1425-1501) was based at Chilwell and was the son of Sir William Babington, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and Sherriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Sir John Babington of Dethick (1423-1485) was Sir William's cousin and died at Bosworth. I know that the families round here were traditionally part of Hastings Retinue but the two Babingtons plus Sir John Sacheverell (who was based down the road from me) are listed as fighting for King Richard at Bosworth

From "Bosworth Field"
"Sir Thomas North with royaltye,
& alsoe Sir John of Babington,
Sir Humphrey Stafford sware certainelye
that King Richard shold keepe his crowne"

After Stoke it would appear that the now Sir John of Chilwell had greater personal importance - he was asked to ascertain how many archers Nottingham could provide and to see to muster of the same for a military expedition to Brittany (Patent Rolls 1488)

I'm rsearching the Chilwell Babingtons as my group portrays them in events. Any info gratfully received!

Yes, there's a good chance they are. There was a Francis Babington who came to Brooklyn from New Jersey with his wife, Phebe. They had a large family, and many of the sons became ferrymen, like Francis. You'll find them in directories and census reports listed as ferry masters, ferrymen, pilots. I guess they ran the boats from Brooklyn to Manhattan, up until bridges were built. Then I think a few of them became conductors.

Was one of Joseph's children a Mabel? There was a Mabel Babington who fell from a window when she was about three, and lived. You might want to check out the Brooklyn Public Library's website. They have free access to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, from the 1850s to about 1902.

I haven't really looked into Joseph's line, since it was Lorenzo my mom remembered from her youth. I wish I could tell you more about that particular line.

In the 1841 census at Ashby de la Zouch LEI ENG my ancestor John BROADHURST (m. Mary GRUNDY), had two Babington children living in his home. I suspect that their mother was a Broadhurst who married a Babington, and their mother had died. The children were Martha Babington, 13 and Ann Babington, 7.
I would like any information about this Babington family.

In the 1841 Census at Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, residing with my gr-gr-grandparents, John and Mary (nee Grundy) Broadhurst, were Martha Babington, 13, and Ann Babington, 7. I have assumed that the parents were dead and that they are somehow related to John or Mary, but I can find only two Babington deaths, Thomas d Dec 1837 at Barrow on Soar, and John Babington, d Dec 1839 at Loughboro and know nothing about their families..

I am seeking any information on the Babington children and why they might have been residing with my ancestors.

Babington in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire

In the census of 1841, at Ashby Z, LEI, my John Broadhurst had two children residing with his family-- Martha Babington, age 13, and Ann Babington, age 7. The IGI shows a Martha Babington, christened 9 November 1828 at Benniworth, Lincolnshire, parents John and Sarah Babington. Martha would be 13 in 1841. There are a number of Babington families recorded in Lincolnshire in 1820s to 1840s, but I can find no direct link of these Babingtons to any Broadhurst family. It would be convenient if the Babington children's mother was a Broadhurst, but if so it would be a lateral line.Does anyone have any information about these Babington's that would help me determine why these children were living in the household of my Broadhurst.
Hi there. My maiden name was Babington. My father was David Babington, son of Lt Col Geoffrey Babington and Lady Anne Egerton. Geoffrey Babington was son of Lt General Sir James Melville Babington. He was married to Eleanor Lawson and son of William Babington and Mary Augusta Melville. The family goes back to about 1200.

Henrietta Spink

Obviously, I have been researching this Babington family because of Theresia, but I do know that Joseph's father, Joseph was a ferrymaster. Joe Jr. was a dry goods salesman in 1898, breaking tradition. I have also found his father (Joe Sr.) was born in New Jersey. I have to think that we are looking for the same family, just differnt branches.
Mabel may have fallen out a window at the age of three and survived, but she still died at the tender age of 17. Yes, Mabel was the daughter of Joseph and Theresia. As for that article.....I have tried to find it both by using the Brooklyn Eagle and the NYTimes. Since the online data base only goes to 1902, that was an effort in futility. Mabel was only born in 1906. Could you be so kind as to send me a copy at mcanzler@hotmail.com? I would really appreciate it.
I have copies of two death certificates of children of William Babington. I would be happy to send you them if you would like them. In my quest to find living relatives of my branch of Babingtons I find anything that may be of interest to you, I will keep you posted.

I too am looking for a Babington family in the Brooklyn New York area. I know very little about them, but I do know my great grandfather, Michael Koch had a half sister named Theresia Henrietta Blanz. Theresia married Joseph Babington and they had six children that I know of. Sadly, half of them died. Of those that lived and could have married a produced heirs was Joseph Jr., Theresa and Florence. I know Florence married Anthony Robert in 1937. It is possible our Babington families are related?

eAlexander thankyou very much for contacting me . At present i am really lost with my Babington research.
Iam not sure if all the Southwark and Bermondsey Babingtons are not all related to each other or not . Your George Frederick whos parents were Elizabeth and John were living in the same area as the ones Iam researching . .and most of all these Babingtons worked as Watermen Lightermen on the river Thames Ihave even tried to follow the Lightermens indexes but so many Thomas , Johns , Georges and Josephs .
My line is as follows . husband grandfather Charles Edwin born 1887 to a n Alfred George born 1857 . Alfreds fatherwas a George Thomas , he was the son of the other John and Elizabeth that lived in the area at the same time as your line .. Ibelieve my John to be the son of a Thomas Babington and a Hannah. i believe that one of the Josephs and the Thomas I have are related in some way . any little bits of information help many thanks

I am a descendant of Charles Babington b.1846 IA or ILL, younger brother to Robert H. Babington b. PA 1835. Do you have any information re: Robert and Charles' parents? Their names were John Babington b.1813 and Mary Harden b. 1816. It was passed down that Mary was actually full blood American Indian but raised by whites. I think that John Babington's family came from England. Can you add anything to that?

Hi ive just come across your post im from a long line of Thames lighterman and waterman babingtons from my fathers, mothers side her name was Kit Babington and her father was Alfred Charles Babington.

My father spent alot of his early years as a Lighterman and Waterman on the River thames and he said the Babingtons were a well known and respected family in that business.

We are no longer in touch with any of the family anymore but i would be really interested to make links with other Babingtons who have ancestry relating to Thames waterman
and lighterman.

Cheers

Tom

my email is Tommyashmore@hotmail.co.uk
