Matthew,

Thanks for your reply! Of course we must be related and I am dying to find out exactly how! I am descended thru Salome and Franz's daughter, Mary/Marie Babst (1856-1888), who was my great-grandmother, b. & d. in Illinois. Please contact me off the message board directly at the folowing e-mail address: paco@gbis.com.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon and sharing information! There were several Babst descendants in California in the early 20th Century (originally from Illinois) but, unfortunately, I have lost track of most of them. I do have some old photos, though.

Regards, "Cousin" Frank Johnson

It has been some time since you posted on this thread but I stumbled upon it today. It appears that Franz Babst and Salome Flori are my great great grandparents. I would love to chat about that line in my family.

Sincerely,
Matthew McLaughlin

It sounds like we may be related, especially if we go back far enough. The Babst name was very common in Bad Bergzabern, Palatinate, Bavaria, and many of that name have ancestral roots there. (US Census records might say "Hanover" as that was the name of the general area, and not just the city, at that time in the mid-19th Century).

I had engaged a German researcher (Vera Nagel) and she provided me with some info about the Babst ancestors. She assured me it is accurate, although it is not technically documented with actual copies of the church records. I will try to send you details of all her results as an attachment in a separate e-mail, off the Board/Post.

This represented a major breakthrough for us as we knew next to nothing about our Babst ancestors in Palatinate/Bavaria before making contact with Vera Nagel a year or two ago. I also have substantial records of the descended Babst families in the U.S. who first settled in Cook County, Illinois (1860 US Census).

From Vera's records: "MICHAEL PABST [sic - I have ignored the spelling, probably a typo as all his siblings are spelled with a "B"] - christened: 19 FEB 1828 in the Catholic church of Bad Bergzabern, Palatinate, Bavaria".

This Michael Babst may have been a little old (over 30) to have enlisted in the Civil War but it is certainly possible. Do you know if he ever married or had any children?

Apparently there were eight (8) children of Ignatius Babst & Juliana Michel (including a Michael and my g.g. grandfather, Franz). "Ignatius" was probably the Latin name and may or may not have been the usual given name he was known by. Have you ever heard of Ignatius Babst & Juliana Michel?

Do you have any info about your Michael Babst's ancestors in Germany? Do you know of Bad Bergzabern as the ancestral Babst birthplace?

Lots of questions - I look forward to exchanging more info with you!

Regards, Frank J.

Hi Frank,

I am curious about Michael Babst in your post. We have a Michael Babst who came to America with (after) Gertrud Stadler and son, Heinrich (Henry). They settled in Newark, NJ and then he went off to war (Civil War). He was captured and died in a prison in Andersonville, Georgia. After his death, Gertrud married his friend, Charles Mueller. Do you have a birthdate for your Michael Babst (sibling of your ancestor). Thanks!

Andreas -

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Did you recognize any of the names in my post, either those from Alsace/Pfalz or in Illinois? Where are you writing from (where do you live?).

As you can see on a map, Lauterbourg is only a few miles from the towns of my Babst/Flori ancestors which are described in my message. (I received an e-mail many years ago that said many Babsts were originally from Bad Bergzabern, which is only a few miles from Lauterbourg).

Many of the Illinois Babsts, all descendents of Franz Babst & Salome Flori (I have a copy of a photograph of her) ended up in California although I have lost touch with them - they were all my grandmother's cousins and relatives. (I grew up in California but now live in Nevada).

Franz Babst had many siblings listed in my previous posting - do you recognize any of their names? (They are given in Latin so they may be slightly different in German or French). There is almost certainly a connection through a mutual ancestor if we go back far enough - we are very likely distant cousins!

I would be very interested in discussing this further with you but we need to first find out which branch of the family you belong to. Do you have any information or evidence of your Lauterbourg Babst ancestors?

Regards, Frank

PS - What does "Hochachtungsvoll" mean?!

BABST - from Rhine-Pfalz/Palatinate

I have recently discovered that my BABST ancestors emigrated from Bad Bergzabern, Palatinate, Bavaria (Germany). This is contrary to previous postings where I was looking at the (wrong) Ohio Babsts and not my correct family from Cook County/Chicago, IL, who were descendants of Frank/Franz Babst & Salome Flori. Their children were named: Lena (Leoni), Leon, August, Mary, Eugene, and John; the 1st 3 were b. in "Hanover, Germany" and the later 3 were b. in Cook County, Illinois (1860 US Census, Chicago Ward 10, Cook County, Illinois).

An abbreviated summary of this new information from a researcher in Germany is as follows:

FRANCISCUS (FRANZ) BABST
Born: 20 AUG 1821 in Bad Bergzabern, Palatinate, Bavaria
Parents:
Father: IGNATIUS BABST
Mother: JULIANA MICHEL

He married:
SALOME FLORI on 16 Oct 1845 in Weyersheim, Bas-Rhin, France

[Bas-Rhin is a département of France. The name means "Lower Rhine". Bad Bergzabern is located close to the border of Germany and France and that region once even belonged to the French Republic. The later mentioned places
"Reichshoffen" as well as "Weyersheim" are today located in France].

SALOME FLORI
Born: 30 SEP 1823 in Reichshoffen, Bas-Rhin, France
Parents:
Father: PIERRE FLORI
Mother: SALOME KEHREN

Siblings of Salome Flori found so far (b. between 1819 and 1832 in either Reichshoffen or Weyersheim, Bas-Rhin, France):

1) MARTINE CATHERINE FLORI
2) FERDINAND FLORI
3) PIERRE FLORI

***************************************

Siblings of Franciscus / Franz Babst found so far (b. between 1823 and 1839, all of them in Bad Bergzabern, Palatinate, Bavaria):

1) ELISABETHA BABST
2) ELISBETHA (sp?) JULIANA BABST
3) MICHAEL BABST
4) JULIANA BABST
5) JULIANA DOROTHEA BABST
6) CHRISTIANUS BABST
7) JOSEPH BABST

Note: The above names were recorded in the Catholic Church of Bad Bergzabern and are most likely Latin, and not necessarily equivalent to the German.

US Census records, as well as anecdotal family evidence (including a few photos), indicate that several descendants and/or relatives of the Chicago Frank Babst family later moved to California in the early 1900s.

Is anyone researching this BABST family? I would like very much to get in touch with the descendants of these long-lost "cousins", or any descendants of the other siblings of Frank/Franz Babst & Salome Flori!

Sincerely, Frank J. (great-grandson of Mary Babst Shober)

Married in Pike Co., 10 Jan 1855 to Elizabeth Brust (7 Mar 1835 in Bavaria, Germany - 27 Mar 1927 in Ross Co.,Ohio). She was the d/o Anton Brust & Catherine Kline (Clein). Ancestor Philip & Margaretha immigrated between 1842 & 1846 and were in Lorain Co., Ohio for a while. They can be found in Pike Co. census in 1850 living in Piketon, Ohio.
BABST, Ludwig

Looking for any info about: Ludwig (or Louis) Babst, b. ca. 1830, and his wife, Elizabeth (maiden name unk) b. ca.1836, immigrated to the U.S. before 1860 from "Bavaria" (1860 & 1870 Census) or "Rheinfoltz", as it is shown in 1880 Census, which is taken to be a misspelling of Rhein-Pfalz(?).

The Babst family is shown as living in the town of Beaver, Pike County, Ohio, for several decades starting some time before 1860. They raised at least 7 children: Mary, the eldest and also my g.grandmother, was born ca. 1857. Mary Babst is not shown in the Babst household in the 1880 Census but in that of John Lobsteni (or Lobstein) and Lena (or Leoni?) Lobstein; this was in Cook County, Illinois, possibly in the town of La Grange, a suburb to the west of Chicago.

At some point, Mary Babst married Frank Shober, originally from Fremont, Lake County, Illinois. My grandmother, Leona Marie Shober (1884-1975), was born to them but raised in La Grange, Illinois, with the Lobstein family as described above.

Anyone having any information about these families please contact me.
Good Frank, I'm glad it helped. What an experience to be able to go to Germany! I wish that you would have had better luck in your findings. The inscription of: Geboren den 11 OKT 1823 in Durkheim Koenigreich Baiern is on the tombstone of Philip Bapst (yet another spelling) in the Old German #2 Cemetery in Beaver Ohio. This is the area of Germany most associated with our Bobst family I think. This Philip Bapst was the spouse of Magdalena Frank, who is buried next to him, and the son of Phillip Jacob Bobst 1802-1865 who is buried in Beaver Union Cemetery. I took tombstone pics & I have them posted at Find a Grave.com. Great site when it's running right. I am descended from Jacob Bobst 1842-1917, youngest son of Phillip Jacob Bobst and brother to the Philip Bapst mentioned above and to your Louis Ludwig Henry Babst. So that would make us distant cousins. Jacob married Elizabeth Kuntzman and fathered Charlotte Bobst. Charlotte married Martin M Hines, son of Christian and Eve Catherine Kuntzman Hines. They were the parents of Charles Edward Hines, my grandfather. Good luck with your continued search. Keep me posted. Carol

Frank, I have a little info about your Babst/Bobst family that may at least point you in a direction. What I have gleaned is Louis Ludwig Henry Babst b: Feb 1830 in Bavaria Germany, married Elizabeth Brust Jan 10, 1856 in Pike Co Ohio. She was the daughter of Andrew and Catherine Brust. Louis (Ludwig/Sudwig) was the son of Phillip Jacob Babst (1801-1865)and Anna Margaretha Lucrohn. I have 7 children listed for Louis and Elizabeth Brust Bobst/Babst; Mary b:1857, William b:1858, Magdalena b:1860, Margaret b:1861, Frank b:1864, Louisa b:1866, Adam b:1868. I got my info from a cousin that has done a lot of research on the Bobst/Babst family. She has posted the gen report on the Scioto Co genweb site. http://www.scioto.org/Scioto/Descendancies/pabst-johann.html
This may help...I hope so. Good luck.
Carol
Bobst descendant
