Hello, this is very exciting. I checked the location name, there are different variations of it: Нижнє Солотвино, Нижная Солотвина, Nižná Slatina, Solotvina, Alsószlatina. It's a village in the Uzhhorod region that has 836 people. The reason it has so many names is bec. it's located in a spot where different cultures crossed - Slovak, Ukrainian, Hungarian, even some German and Polish...
Ruski Komarivtsi is a larger village, I think Solotvina might be a part of it.
BTW, there is a famous Slovak opera singer named Martin Babjak:
http://www.snd.sk/?detail-6&meno=babjak-martin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT3y8sGCyNA

The problem is, there are so many people with this last name living in so many different locations that it's quite impossible to figure out now who is related and who not. Especially bec. there was such a big migration there last century. But still, it's very exciting you at least have a birth certificate of your gr-gr-gr father!

(I guess we should start some Babyak fan club, who knows, it might be interesting to meet each other:)))

Looking to find ties between all the families settled in Holyoke bet. early 1900's and present. I have Babyaks coming from Nižná Slatina in Ukraine (Ellis Island records) and settling in the area-- they might be brothers or cousins. They are:

Johann Aloysius Babyak-- children became Babyok
Michael
Andrew (Andras)
John
I think my ancestors come from Nizhniy Solotvina in the Ukraine. They emigrated in the 1890s to Boston and settled in western Mass. Their names were Johann Aloysius Babiak (changed to Babyok in the U.S.) and Lena (?).

I have a christening certificate (attached) from the Russian Orthodox church in Russke Komarovtsy. I believe it's for Johann's brother Mikhail. The parents listed are Mikhail Babiak and Anna Tovt (or Toth?).

My gr-gr-grandfather Johann's info is:
Birth: Nov 1869
Nizhniy Solotvina, Ukraine
Death: abt 1921
Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, United States

I'm wondering if you have an Anna Smoliak in your family tree? I have received a Social Security application from 1936 that I thought would be my great aunt's--instead, it is a Mary Chymczuk Medwid. She lists her mother as Anna Smoliak and her father as Andrew Chymczuk. Mary's address was 431 Columbia St Hudson, NY, DOB=10/17/1896.

She isn't any relation to me, but I'd be happy to scan it for you, if she's one of your relatives.

Do you have any idea from what village your Babyak/Babjak ancestors came? Knowing the village of your ancestors is one of the most important things to getting help from others in your research.

Besides mine (from a village between Svidnik & Bardejov, Saros county, Slovakia), I know there's a Babyak (Babjak also the original spelling of that one) from another area (Either close to or now in what is now western Ukraine).

If I can be of any help, let me know.

MARIANNE

The Babyak family from Nastasiv, Ukraine

Hello everyone. I am looking for any relatives out there connected to the Babyak and/or Smolyak families that existed in Nastasiv, in Western Ukraine.
My great-grand father`s name was Yakym Babyak, he was born in Nastasiv. He had 5 kids over there: 3 daughters: Xeniya, Melania (my grand-mother)and Eugeniya (she is still alive!), and 2 sons, Vassyl and Bohdan.
I know that someone from the Babyak family emigrated to the US (I think it was US) and that`s why my family was persecuted and Xeniya was sent to Siberia, I think for 7 years. I`m not sure if it was her husband or father who emigrated, but I know that later, when that person has died, she got some portion of his/her heritage from abroad. That time the regime did not allow her to get cash so she got several Volga cars instead. Crazy, but truth.
Anyways, if there is anyone who feels he/she might be related to us, please let me know. I live in the US.
Attached please see the picture of Melania Babyak, my grand-mother.
Thanks,
Mariana

Carol,
That sounds good. I am so excited at the thought of actually finding him. I hope he is the correct man! My father in law didn't talk much about his time in the war and no one in the family knew he had this ID tag until after his death when we were going through his belongings. It would be great if your uncle could tell us if he served with him and maybe even tell us where they served. Keep me posted and thank you so much for contacting me!
I would love to be able to find out if this is the same man. I would so like to return this military tag to him and find out how my father in law got it. If it is no trouble, could you please let him know that I have this and if he is interested, I would like to return it to him.
Hi Marianne,
Rhona's mother-in-law is actually my Aunt Linda, my dad's sister. I have talked to Jack and Lucille (her dad was my great uncle John) through e-mail. I did not realize how extensive the family actually is.
I would greatly appreciate any information you have on the family.
Have a wonderful day,
Sue

Hi, Susan! I haven't check the board in about a week or so but wanted to say "Hello".

My Babyaks are related to yours, and Rhona has probably already told you that you have quite a few cousins researching our family.

I notice that you'd also posted a message on re: Gula ancestors. Cousin Jack posted a reply to you over there. He and our cousins Carol & Lucille are part of that branch of the family. My paternal grandmother was a Babyak -- cousin to men who were the Babyak grandfathers of Jack, Carol, Lucille, and Rhona's mother-in-law Linda.

Will be sending you direct E-mail too.

MARIANNE

Mine were from a small village near Svidnik. You've probably seen a few of my messages on the boards here. I am looking for any info pertaining to john and edna babyak (indiana), and george and mary babyak who i believe came over from slovakia, austria or poland. We are not sure, but those seem to be things my mom remembers. Any information you have would be appreciated. Isn't it interesting that so many of the names, related or not are similar (george, andy, mike)
thanks,
stacy
