My family arrived just before the "War between the States" and some fought for the Union in various Iowa regiments. My direct line arrived in '56 and was too old.

So, I know we're aren't kin folk on that line. However, all of my mother's people were Rebels, and several were shown to own slaves. Human nature being what it is, I'm certain that I have numerous "Black" relatives. How are you able to find out which slaves had white fathers? I would love to be able to include them in my tree... blood is blood, and it's all red.

PS

I have encountered several Black Bacchus here in Texas including a few I met while at UT. They told me their families came from Bacchus plantations in Miss. I also learned that some of that line moved to Brazil. We once had a Brazilian student contact us who was from that line. He had photos of his "confederate" x great grandparents and told me that they still had confederate reunions down there.

My little brother was born in Brazil... but we are NOT part of that group either.

I'm the only "Reb" Bacchus in the world... but there are many different and unrelated Bacchus lines. I've been able to trace my Yorkshire line back to the 1300s where records stop, however there Backhouse,Bacchus,Bakehouse,Baccus... you get the idea all over England. For some strange reason Backhouse is the most common in England but almost all changed the spelling when they got to this country.

The old English spelling was probably Baechus and was the trade name for the assistant who lived in the Bakery and got the fires going in the morning for the Baker to start his work. So, a humble name that I feel has a proud history in this country. A number of my family have served in the service, as have other Bacchus lines... and they've done okay for Baker's helpers.

I've got a pretty good line on when they arrived and where they lived and I've got all the folks in my direct line. Where I'm falling short is with the other children of Robert Bacchus and Sarah Francis Hicks. I'm also looking for the children of William and Mary Bacchus who also moved to Iowa in their later years. The only one I know about is Charles. I have two of his daughters but that's it.

Truly:

I just had the opportunity to read this reply to my e-mail a few years ago. The person in t he list that talked about spelling the name four different ways is the family that I am a member. I am interested in further discussions about the possible link from Virginia. Lizzy (Lizzie) birth state is listed as Virginaa and South Carolina by two of ther siblings. It appears that she was sold to a Julius Casear Robertson in the early or late 1840's and came to MS with a son by the name of Andrew - (born in 1847).
Lizzie would later have two other sons and a daughter. I have more than 500 descendants of this Lady. Of course given the fact that African Americans were slaves unitl 1865, these people had no name of value - just gender and age.
I have another idea of how to find what happened to her that I will pursue as well.
Contact me at kbacchus@att.net when you see this message. There may be something between both our data.

Thanks,

Ken Bacchus
Kansas City, MO
816-516-9528

My name is George Barrett "Barry" Bacchus, Jr. and my ancestors come from Walton county in Georgia. My father was George Barrett Bacchus and my grandfather was George Washington Bacchus and my great-grandfather was John Zachary Taylor Bacchus. The Barrett name comes from my maternal grandmother who was Sara Barrett. My grandparents are buried in Monroe,Georgia. There are other Bacchus people in Walton county at present. The geneology goes back several generations ( I have this )in Walton county but I'm curious about our country of origin. England has been mentioned by one of my distant cousins but nothing definite. If anyone can help, please respond. The last few generations are caucasian but would appreciate any leads. Barry

You inquired as to any Bacchus or Bachus living in TN or MS and that your children GGG Mother was a slave. I am conducting similar research and hail from Northern MS with many family members in Memphis, TN. The Bacchus-Bachus-Bacus-Backers are hosting a family reunion in Kanss City this summer. I am researching a slave lady with the name LIZZIE BACHUS who was purchased around 1850 and moved either from SC or VA with a son by the name of GEORGE. She later birhted Andrew, Henderson, and Ophelia. Most of these families still live in the Greater Memphis TN and northern MS.

I would appreciate any information that will be helpful and/or assist you in your research.

Thanks,

Ken Bacchus

Henrietta Bacchus was my g-g-grandmother. We have thought her the child of John A. Bacchus and Sary James, but have no proof of that. We have John A. Bacchus as the son of John Bacchus and Mary Allison and the father of John Bacchus as Thomas Bacchus.
Jim Burnette

It appears that John was born in 1812 in Donington, Lincs, UK. His wife was called Sarah (bn 1813 in Swineshead). They lived on Cheese Hill, Swineshead. The trade directories have different spellings for the surname and it is sometimes shown as BACKUS or BACKAS.

Hello Stacey,
My great uncle-in-law was a Bacchus. I believe he was from Virginia but lived in and got amrried in various places in the South. I think he was born in the early 1880's or so. His name was Frank Bacchus. His parents were, I think, Norbonne and Virginia Bacchus. He had 2 sisters named Henrietta and Gertrude..... I think they all lived on S Street in the NW section of Washington DC.
OK....if any of that info rang a bell, please let me know. I've been very interested in genealogy lately and would ove to hear from a distant relation.
Hope you have a good 4th of July and hope to hear from you soon.....
Tim

I would be interested to learn if there is a connection. Do you know how or when Lizzie Bachus took the last name?

John A. BACCHUS of TN 1801-1873

I believe my 4g grandfather John A. BACCHUS was brother to Asa W., son of John and Mary (ELLISON) BACCHUS, but have not proved it. John A. was born 14 Jan 1801 Tennessee and died 26 Jan 1873 Johnson Co., Arkansas. He apparently married 1) Sary JAMES 22 Aug 1818 in Rutherford Co., TN and 2) Rebecca MARKUM 11 Feb 1855 in Henry Co., TN
Only known child of John is Charles L., but there is a Henrietta in Charles' 1850 Henry Co., TN household who is probably his sister. She married John Wiley DOWDY and remained in TN. Charles L. was born 26 Oct 1821 TN and died 26 June 1890 Johnson Co., AR. He married Elizabeth Sarah BUSHART and had eight children, 7 of whom lived to adulthood - William, James, Martha Ann, John H., Charles Jr., Sarah C., and Elizabeth.
My ancestor Sarah BACCHUS married William Lewis PATE. Her sister Martha married Winfield Scott BURGESS. I have marriages for most of their siblings as well.

Patricia,
I tried to reply personally, but the email bounced. I hope you see this and get in touch.
Charles L. BACCHUS of Henry Co., TN was the son of John A. BACCHUS. John is buried next to Charles and his wife at Annie's Chapel Cemetery in Hagarville, Johnson Co., Arkansas. John and Charles left Tennessee shortly after 1855, went to Missouri, then Kansas, and were in Johnson Co., AR by 1860. Charles was my 3g grandfather.
I believe Henrietta must have been a sister of Charles, but have no info on any siblings, other than her presence in that census. I do have info on the family in Arkansas, however.
I also believe that John A. BACCHUS was a brother of Asa W., son of John and Mary (ELLISON) BACCHUS. Do you have any information about their relationship?

Bacchus family in Lynchburg Va, and later in Wash DC.

Hello,
My beloved gr Aunt's husband was a Bacchus from Virginia.
His name was Dr. Frank Van Buren Bacchus. He was a fairly noted pharmacist first in Va. then later in the Nation's Capital. I believe he had at least 2 sisters named Gertrude and Henrietta (Johnson). For many decades they lived near Swann St and New Hampshire Ave in Wash DC. Although him and his wife (the late former N. Clayton-Bacchus) have been deceased for several decades or more, they did make quite an impact on any community that was fortunate enough to have them as residents.
K....if any of this sounds familiar, the please drop me aline sometime. You know where to find me.
OK...hope to hear from anyone soon and have a happy, festive, and safe 4th of July tomorrow!!
Tim

My mother was a 'Bacchus'. I traced her family tree back to 1650 in Bethnal Green. They were silk weaver's and they lived with other French Heugenout families. My grand-father always thought the family were french, yet when I asked at the family history society, I was told that Bacchus was from Bakehouse. This may be true for some but not for mine, and maybe not for yours!
